Marcus: The Weight Loss Chronicles

Quick update:

Weight this morning: 169.5
Pounds lost this week: 1 lbs.

Going to try zig zagging calories now. 2000 for 2 days then 1500 for 2 days, we'll see how that works. Thanks for the support, guys & everyone have a kickass Thursday.

well done on getting into the 32in pants :) thats a really great achievement and well done for losing the lb! :)

Congrats! That's awesome, man. I can't remember the last time I was in a 32 pant. :D Or if I'm even capable of a 32. Let us know how the zig zagging goes. Good luck with it.

Just got back from a f'n great workout. All my resistance workouts went better than usual and oddly I was on a full stomach (of tuna). Felt a bit nauseous during cardio, but was almost worth the extra energy the food probably gave me for weight lifting.

Unfortunately zig zagging calories isn't going to happen today. I didn't bring near enough snacks to work and was basically hungry for half the day, so I would have to gorge myself to catch up to 2000 calories now that I'm home. I'll start tomorrow and plan better.

Sam, Trops, Kotki, Fish, thank you guys so much for leaving me supportive comments. You probably don't realize how far a few words can go and what a positive impact it is on me. Unfortunately, most people in my life are not very understanding of my health goals. I'm surrounded by people that don't care at all about their bodies and they honestly are trying to bring me down with them. I probably need new friends, but that's part of why I'm relocating later this year.

Iam sorry that you have people around you who are not understanding of your goals! try not to let it bother you, you are doing great and we are all here to cheer you on!

Hey,

Sorry to hear your surrounded by some negative people. I guess I'm kind of lucky that I have mostly supporters. Some people are just at different points in their life and others aren't. I have a few friends currently that are horrifying me with the things they do to their bodies, and I guess I'm just in a different place than them. Getting hammered most nights of the week and chain smoking, and not getting enough sleep are not my ideas of fun. I don't live that lifestyle. I like my routines and having some sort of balance in my life. Relocating yourself could be a great thing.

Happy to hear that this journal you have going and everyone's comments are helping you out. That is what this is all about.

Hang in there :)
-Sam

hay there just read your comment on the thread about the boyfriend calling the girl fat, i can agree with you to some extent about what you are saying for example when my mum got together with her fiance she was really overweight and she lost over 140lbs to make herself feel better and to some extent to impress him as she wanted to look good for him! but we all know that its never nice to be told to F word as the truth hurts :)

Hope all is going well with you :)

I'm surrounded by people that don't care at all about their bodies and they honestly are trying to bring me down with them. I probably need new friends, but that's part of why I'm relocating later this year.

This is one aspect that I've been extremely lucky with. But those same friends that are supportive now about me losing weight weren't so supportive of past efforts to better myself by quitting smoking and drinking less.

I don't know if they're more supportive now because they know I'm going to do it with or without their support or because this doesn't infringe on my 'funness' in some way.

Either way, this time around I have a lot of good support. My wife is making better food, we're buying better food, my friends are complimentary and encouraging and I appreciate all of that. Rightly so, it seems.

I hope your friends come around or you find better support as you go.

Alright,
Here's what I've done so far to battle the psuedo-plateau. I say psuedo because I did drop one pound last week, but it took about 4 weeks to do that & it could just be water/bowel weight/scale fluctuation.

From recommendations from folks & searching around online, I decided to try the calorie zig zag. I've done two high days at 2000/cal and I'm on my second low day of 1500/cal. I guess I'm going to try something like high-high-low-low-high-low-norm and repeat that cycle each week to try to fool with my metabolism. It wasn't as hard as I thought to keep track of the calories and I didn't really get as hungry as I expected on 1500 [although today isn't over yet].

Next, I've changed my cardio routine up a little bit. I start with 20 minutes of bike and then go to 20 minutes of elliptical instead of just 40 minutes of elliptical. However, I've decided its time to start HIIT. I think I'm going to try it first on the elliptical tomorrow. I plan on doing that twice a week on days when I don't do weight lifting and then steady state on the other 4 days of the week. From my estimation, the routine I plan on doing should take about 20 minutes, then I think I will follow it with a 20 minute slow/medium intensity cool down on the bike or maybe simply walking on the track. I'm kind of nervous about getting nauseous during HIIT. I think if I'm on a relatively empty stomach it shouldn't be that big of a problem. I'll have to plan a late afternoon snack at work so I don't have to eat right before the gym.

With doing all this new shit, my new goal is 1lb lost by the following Thursday morning May 29th. I may be able to post one pound on this week's weigh in, but I'm not counting on it. My body is fighting to retain these last few pounds of abdominal fat so I know this is going to be a slow process.

Thanks again for the support, guys.

Sounds like it should work. HIIT is tough. I tried it, but wasn't in the right state for it. I'm going to give it another try. Good luck.

A few measurements...

Gut (at belly button): 33" Change from 4-27: -0.75"
Gut (at widest part): 34" Change from 4-27: -1.0"

Note that my weight has only dropped 3lbs since that date, so maybe more is going on than I think is going on. Again, screw the scale.

hay just wanted to know how the cal zig zag is working for you? I hope all with you is fine :)

Screw the scale indeed:coolgleamA:

I get nervous about nausea at the gym sometimes too. I got nauseous doing squats a few times and it wasn't pretty. I think some of it was mental, my trainer had me doing 3x20 or 25 squats at like 55 or 60% of my max... which I think was like 140 or 150lbs at the time. The whole knowing you have to make it clear to a 20 count, three times in a row was very overwhelming sometimes, and it was even on a Smithsonian machine... I don't know about you but my quads burn like no other muscle in my body when they are being worked hard... It's like somebody is holding a blowtorch right on them, lol...

Good luck at the gym and i hope you reach the goal you set for yourself by the end of the month :)

Kotki, thanks for asking. Let me just say that I got hungry today on 1500 calories, unlike yesterday. Maybe because I did weight lifting today? O well, tomorrow is a high today so I'm happy.

I've decided to also try my version of carb cycling. I'm going to try to alternate days of 50/25/25 carbs/fats/proteins with 20/40/40 carbs/fats/proteins. So I'll have some days of high calorie/low carb, low calorie/low carb, high calorie/normal carb, and low calorie/normal carb. All that variation combined with HIIT should jumpstart my metabolism & get this weight loss moving again.

I don't know about you but my quads burn like no other muscle in my body when they are being worked hard... It's like somebody is holding a blowtorch right on them, lol...
Sam, I totally know what you mean. That burn in the quads seriously sucks. My legs are so weak, it's always kind of embarassing for me to do squats at the gym [I've gotten over it, but it's still annoying]. I work out with between 115-135 with free weights, haven't tried the smith machine. BTW, you might appreciate this Sam, I bought a pair of 32 skinny jeans from guess the other day and they have room to spare in the waist! I couldn't believe it.

I got back from my first HIIT session about an hour ago. Holy f'n shit. I couldn't believe how intense it was. I could only manage four (or maybe five, I was so out of it during the intervals) 30sec. intervals with 90sec. rest in between each. I warmed up with 12 minutes and cooled down with about 15 minutes. O yea, this was all on the elliptical. I got all light headed and nauseous near the end of each interval. This is a serious workout, folks. My throat hurt from breathing so hard after I was done. I felt like I literally could not catch my breath between the first and second intervals. If this doesn't break my plateau over the next few weeks, nothing will. I was shooting for 6 intervals, maybe next time I can make it that far.

As far as diet, today was a high-calorie (2000), low-carb (21%) day. I managed to hit about 180g of protein. Tomorrow is going to be a low-calorie (1500), normal carb (50%) day. Low carb days are hard to plan, it seems like everything has some carbs, so I basically ate a lot of tuna fish, nuts, and dairy today. I brought 2 boiled eggs to work and was horrified to find they were more slime-boiled than hard boiled when it came snack time. Luckily, there was a cheese tray at work that made up for the missed fat/protein calories.

I am really excited about my new routine. It's more complicated than the old one, but I feel like this will have to work. It took a long time to figure all this stuff out & I'm hoping my approach is sound and I will see some results over the next two weeks.

My schedule should look like this:

Saturday:
High calorie (2000), low carb (20%)
30 min. HIIT routine
Sunday:
High calorie (2000), normal carb (50%)
Rest day-no workouts
Monday:
Low-calorie (1500), low carb (20%)
Full body weight training
40min. steady state cardio
Tuesday:
Low-calorie (1500), normal carb (50%)
30min. HIIT routine
Wednesday:
High-calorie (2000), low carb (20%)
Full body weight training
40min. steady state cardio
Thursday:
Low-calorie (1500), normal carb (50%)
40min steady state cardio
Friday:
Normal calorie (1750), low carb (20%)
Full body weight training
40min. steady state cardio

That HIIT sounds killer. I'm kind of looking forward to trying it again and yet dreading it at the same time. Good luck

Nice job at the gym and nice work planning the plateau buster. Hope it works out for you. Looks like a killer routine.

I'm sure zig-zagging is going to be much harder on weight days. Even the little bit I've done so far I've felt much hungrier after where what I would normally eat that evening does not satiate like it normally does.

Good luck with this new routine.

Glad to hear you broke thru the plateau. That routine you got going at the gym sounds pretty intense. Congrats on the jeans, that is awesome. I love Guess jeans. I'm still working on getting into mine :)

Have a great day,
Sam
