Mana's Diner

Sounds like you're doing a great job so far :). Good luck w/ your plans to have a baby and also with your allergy/rash; I hope you found the culprit! A year or two back, I had a bad case of hives that would come and go. It lasted for about 6mos, but I never found what caused it. I'm glad you may have gotten to the bottom of your "rash mystery", though! ;)

You know... being an islander, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that a form of wheat intolerance runs in your family. Wheat doesn't grow on islands, or at least not very well, and it does have some VERY unusual properties, nutritionally and medically. Try going a few weeks with no wheat (I'm sorry!) and see what kind of difference it makes in your life and in your health. Pretty much anything that can be done with wheat can be done with soybeans or rice, and those ARE a traditional part of the polynesian diet.

*looks back over things* You are a pacific islander, right? Hawaiian, from the sound of your name, and you do have that island glow in your picture.
Damn, I feel like a redneck now.
lol

Oh man, now I'm wanting a Smirnoff Wild Grape :p I LOVE those. I still have some left in my fridge from New Year's (and some Arctic Berry and I think maybe a Green Apple and a Raspberry maybe, but Wild Grape is my favourite) but I've been avoiding them because I haven't wanted them quite badly enough to make room in my calories for them.

Thanks, T2

Thanks ready2live, I hope so too. And my ankle does seem to be clearing up.

LOL, nope, I'm not a pacific islander or Hawaiian. I haven't been asked that since college. :D Actually, my mother is Thai and my dad is a corn fed Iowa boy, so I grew up eating meat and veggies and thai food (which doesn't have wheat for the most part, except maybe the soy sauce.) It's been a rough week so far, mainly wanting crackers more than bread. But I've definitely noticed a difference and would highly recommend it to everyone, even for a trial period.

LOL, yeah I know what you mean. I didn't look up the cals for it until I started drinking one and by that point I figured, aw what the heck, if I were hungry after drinking a couple it wouldn't be that hard to fall asleep. :D

Well, I've got a loaf of gluten free bread rising in the oven right now. Cross your fingers and hope that it tastes ok. :)
Right now I slept in, so I'm having breakfast/lunch. It's actually something I used to have a lot when I was a kid, very traditional Thai breakfast. White rice (I've tried brown and it's just not the same) and fermented mustard greens. Writing it out is sounds awful, but it's pretty good. Basically you get the sweet white rice flavor mixed with this crunchy cabbage-like salty/sour greens. Maybe it's an acquired taste but I like it a lot. One can of the fermented mustard greens is 35 cals and a couple cups of white rice is 411 cals. So for breakfast/lunch is about 450 cals. And considering I'm only going to get to eat one more meal today, I'm ok with that.

D'oh! Well, it's good to know that I got the right HALF of the WORLD in there, lol.
The rice and fermented mustard greens actually sounds pretty tasty. I've been looking for fresh and they are almost impossible to find out here, but if they have canned... Well, I'd just add some bacon to that dish :D

I hear Grape Smirnoff is a good calorie filler ;)
And a great prego assister ;) :p
teehee

Congrats on the loss :)
Thanks

LOL, I don't usually, but I told my husband that if they don't let me sleep in one weekend a month, it was going to be a bad month......for them. :p

D00d... I LOVE Thai food, first off. Secondly, I have the best Thai restaurant in the world about two miles from my house. Thirdmost, Thai food isn't weird, it's delicious!
The many curry recipes, and bizarre noodle dishes, and even the tom kha gai recipes that taste like flowers instead of food are good! Okay, so the tom kha soup isn't my favorite, but I have yet to actually eat any dish prepared there that isn't delicious and my only complaint is that they started reducing the heat in the 3 star and 5 star dishes. (Too many people complained that it was "too hot"... )

What a spot on day :)
Good job Mana!

Thanks!

I love thai food, but the restaurants around here are very americanized and also tone down their 5 star spicy dishes. So I have to make the easy stuff here and hope that my mom takes pity on me once in a while and cooks me up some yummy food. My favorite dish is sticky rice and som tom. Although if they make the pad thai spicy enough that's really good too.

There's this one place up in Olympia... their "chef special noodles" are one of the things I look forward to on my trips up there. I had to quit eating them for a long time because starches affect me negatively, but now I have pills that help with that :D

It's a huge meal, and probably a thousand calories or more on the plate, but oh so delicious... Well, maybe not a thousand, it is mostly veggies, but it is still a huge meal and tasty as anything.
I've been ordering Thai soups more often lately, I am REALLY starting to enjoy them; even more than a curry "Made the way the cooks eat it" (extra spicy, above and beyond a painful 5 star experience).

Well, it's been exactly one week since I started this wheat/gluten free diet to see if I have an allergy. And I have to say I feel amazing! I have tons of energy again, like I did during the summer, when I didn't realize I was eating very little bread/flour. I'm waking up earlier again, like around 5-5:30, instead of dragging myself out of bed at 6:30 and wandering around in the morning in a daze. I'm not bloated anymore and my rings are falling off my hand. I haven't worked out since last week, so I don't think it's that.

And best of all, since last Wednesday, I'm down 3.5 lbs total. So now I'm at 227.
Yay!!!

Food for the day

breakfast:
Corn Tortillas, 2
Kraft Finely Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, 0.12 cup
Egg white, 2
Egg, fresh, 1 large
Cals: 242

lunch:
Baby Carrots, raw, 400 grams
Cucumber (with peel), 1 cucumber (8-1/4")
Celery, raw, 6 stalk, medium (7-1/2" - 8" long)
Peanut Butter, smooth style, 4 tbsp
Cals: 609

dinner:
Vegetarian Black Bean Soup
Cals: 438

Total for the day: 1288
I'm counting all of my calories even though I didn't finish all of my lunch and probably only had two tbsp of the peanut butter. And the cheese for the eggs was more like a sprinkle enough to get the eggs to stick to the tortillas.

It looks like you are having a good time making sure you get to eat good stuff! Have you gotten into that gluten free bread yet? I don't see it mentioned anywhere, but I didn't read back to the other pages.
