Major weight loss... Help!

Whats up everyone?

Well, today i decided i want to lose weight and become skinny. I am 19 years old and a sophomore in college. I weigh 297lbs and i am 6'1".

School basically just ended for the summer and i want to lose a lot of weight before i go back. At my house i have a treadmill and a one of these machines but just not as fancy:

I want to run on the treadmill for a while, then take a break and then use the machine, then run on the treadmill once more.

I have protein drinks that i am going to make that will hopefully help out.

How much weight do you think i can lose before i go back to school sometime in the beginning of September?

What do you think i should do to achieve maximum weight loss by the time i go back to school?

Thanks,
Brian

i understand wanting to lose weight in a certain time frame. so that when you go back to school you'll be all hot and skinny, etc...

However, if you push yourself too hard, you're going to burn yourself after too long, and then you'll crash and gain it all back. Or you'll realize your goal isnt acheiveable by a certain date and just give up.

ive ALWAYS made my goals too soon. Like i'll say, "oh i want to get in shape for summer, when its already mid-march..., or "oh i want to get in shape for new years!" when its mid-november.

then i crash diet for a month, lose a bunch of weight, burn out, quit and gain it all back.

I've decided to instead give myself PLENTY of time for my goals. So, rather than trying to get in shape for summer, im going to try and get in shape for NEXT summer. sure its a ways away, but time goes by super fast, and i know i'll stick with it.

So maybe, go for losing all the weight by the end of NEXT summer, that way you'll lose it more slowly which allows your body to adjust so its used to being at a lower weight and you wont gain it all back super fast, AND you wont have to worry about loose skin. whereas if you weigh 300 pounds and lose it super quick, you're going to have loose skin.

I dunno, just my 2 cents. take them or throw them in the wishing well.

You could probably lose at least 30lbs by sept if you do everything in moderation. It's hard to say, I see these contestants on biggest loser losing 5 lbs a week or more at times.

I say work out as much as you can for a while and see how your weight comes off. Depending on your metabolism, it could vary.

Good luck!! I know how hard it is to be overweight in college, it is so hard.

You can do it!

You should try to organize your approach when it comes to exercise.

Use that weight machine you have at least 3 times a week, say monday, wednesday, friday... for 45 mins a session (up to, but no more than one hour)

Then walk on that treadmill for 45 mins to one hour per morning at least 3 times a week, say tuesday, thursday, saturday. If you have the discipline to this 6 times a week, even better. I say 'walk' because at your weight running is going to be tough on your joints. And if you can, do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Make sure to drink a protein shake after your weight training, and walking sessions.

Eat six small meals a day. Drink a lot of water. Make sure to get a good 8 hours of restful sleep at night, preferably starting at 10pm (yes, this is important).

There's more... but that's all you need for now. Do all the above CONSISTENTLY and you will see the pounds drop off.

Good luck,

Omid

Hi Brian,

Good luck on your goal. You're going to need a lot of discipline.

First off... do yourself a favor and ditch the protein shakes. Those things aren't satisfying and will leave you in a state of craving. What you need is real food. Be prepared to count the calories in each and everything you eat. Try and put together a meal plan. Remember there are 3500 calories in a pound. Estimate how many calories you are burning daily versus what you are consuming. Do the math and determine a rate of weight loss that you can deal with.

So far everyone else here has cautioned you about losing a lot of weight before you return, saying you'll burn out. I don't think you will IF you go about it the right way.

The treadmill is a good start. The treadmill should be your friend... every single day. Cardio is one of the greatest fat burners in existence and you should take advantage of it. You might get bored running on that thing so I might recommend keeping a TV handy. Try and run during your favorite television programs so you can take your mind off of the pain. Run a mile, walk a mile, jog a mile, walk a mile. You should be able to handle that without collapsing. The walking breaks are very helpful.

Also: Hit your machine up weights wise daily as well. You won't gain muscle by doing this but keep in mind that gaining muscle is not your goal, losing weight is. What you need to be focused on is calorie burn... 100%.

Your project won't be easy but I think you can get some noticeable results by the time you return to college. I actually had a similar situation where I had to impress a GF's mother not long ago. I actually wrote up a story concerning it... check it here:

Take a look... also there are some suggested meal plans on there if you need them. Everyday stuff you can buy at the store.

Do the math and you'll acheive your goal. Good luck! Keep us updated.
