Fast, Effective: The 10 Laws of Losing Weight
By Dr. Matthew Anderson
eDiets Contributor

For these to apply you must practice all, I SAID ALL, of the Laws I am presenting. Notice I used the word “practice.” I did not say “try” or “sample.” Serious weight loss that is sustained is tough to accomplish -- unless you practice these Laws.
Practicing the principles will produce results and my experience is that everyone is capable of doing what is required and thus producing the desired results. How long it takes to get there is a very complex issue. Every one of us starts at a different point. But these laws apply to ALL.

eDiets has many different types of support-based programs as well as 24 fantastic meal plans to suit different lifestyles and food preferences. To get started, click here and fill out a free diet profile.
IMPORTANT!!! I have listed the Laws in order of importance, from the least important to the most important. For the best results, start at the bottom and work up. The average seeker of weight loss usually starts at the top and gives up because she/he has not attended to the deeper and more crucial issues. Build a strong foundation before you try to put in a window on the third floor.

1. EXERCISE -- A minimum of 20 minutes of aerobic exercise to increase the heart rate three times per week. Talk to your doctor and start slowly. More exercise is OK as long as it is sensible and balanced.

2. EAT HEALTHY -- Have balanced meals, more fruits, vegetables and fish, less red meat and far less junk food. Vitamin supplements are OK if guided by a nutritionists or doctor.

3. EAT LESS -- Conscious eating always produces a significant decrease in food consumption. This can mean as much as 50 to 75-percent difference in some compulsive eaters.

NOTE: One's ability to consistently fulfill and practice Laws 1, 2 and 3 is dependent upon the practice of all 7 Laws below. Will power and denial are no substitutes. The ability to sustain the practice of the first three Laws is a direct result of practicing Laws 4 through 10.

4. SELF-EXPRESSION -- Being and doing your true self in action, words and thinking is essential. Say what you mean, do what is right for you and live a life that reflects your best talents and skills. This Law is highly dependent upon the practice of Laws 5 through 10.

5. SELF-ACCEPTANCE -- A willingness and ability to love and accept yourself as the imperfect and wonderful person that you are. Overcoming crippling self-hate and extreme self-judgment and replacing them with compassion and a realistic assessment of your true value. This Law is dependent upon the practice of Laws 7, 9 and 10.

6. MANAGE EMOTIONS -- The ability to identify, observe and productively focus and/or express your intense emotions. This Law is dependent upon the practice of Law 7.

7. HEAL EMOTIONS -- Identifying, experiencing and working through your emotional wounds so they no longer dominate your behavior, your relationships and your sense of self. This Law is dependent upon the practice of Laws 8, 9 and 10.

8. MANAGE THINKING -- The ability to identify, observe and productively focus your thought processes. Includes the awareness that most thinking is perceiving as opposed to knowing. This Law is dependent upon the practice of Law 9.

9. HEAL THINKING -- Identifying, experiencing and working through your mental wounds so that they no longer dominate your emotions, your perceptions, your relationships and your sense of self.

10. SPIRITUAL NURTURE AND DEVELOPMENT -- A willingness and ability to connect and relate to the Divine Source -- God -- Higher Power. An ability to allow that Source to guide your life and nurture your deepest needs. This Law affects all other Laws. Your ability to practice it effectively can be limited by issues either healed or avoided in Laws 7 and 9.

Question: Can you start with any Law and go from there to the others? Yes you can. In fact that’s what we all do. The most important point here is that you cannot eliminate a Law.

Question: Can you practice more than one Law at a time? Absolutely. We all do. You can diet and eat less while you are working on your spiritual development and healing your emotional wounds. One supports the other.

Question: How fast can I expect results? I don’t know. Sometimes some individuals lose weight quickly. Others need to grow spiritually or emotionally before the weight disappears.

I suggest you use these Laws as an opportunity to assess your life. Which Law “calls” you. Answer the call and see what happens. Then ask the question again. For more tough-minded weight-loss tools, please go to

and I read this in another post but I want to stick the link in mine so that I can find it later :) It's pretty interesting.

Ugh...I feel like crap today, don't know why...just one of those days.
I miss my husband and word is going around now about a possible extension...I swear I won't be able to handle that...not now, not this time..pleasssssssssssse. I lived through one 14month deployment...and I'm struggling to make it through this 12month one...please dont let it become longer...pleassssssse. Work is sucking today on top of everything else.

okay, enough pity party for me...

I've started taking fish oil, green tea, a multi vitamin and a emergen-c drink every day. So far its surpressed my appetite I believe.
Today we had a meeting first thing in the morning...they had DONUTS!! ahhh, I walked right by them!! Go ME!! Funny thing is...as much as I wanted one, passing them up made me feel better than eating one would have!!

Breakfast: Cup of Kashi Autumn Wheat Cereal w/ cup skim milk.

Snack: Flax seed cookie a few almonds( I pack a bag w/ 1oz of almonds for a snack, I eat a few here and there usually half for my first snack and half for my second snack) Raisins.

Lunch: Leftovers from easter...yikes!! a bit of cheese potatos, squash suffle' (sp?), carrot suffle' (sp?) and jello salad.....not the healthiest lunch...but maybe its better than a big pizza :)

Snack: Carrots, Grapes, the rest of my Almonds.

Dinner: Salmon/ Spinach salad w/ a bit of cheddar cheese and low fat honey mustard dressing, a cup of cooked creamed spinach as well. Yum. and for dessert: a graham cracker :)

Tonight is kickboxing!!! Yay...I've missed the class for the past two weeks b/c the instructor was out w/ a pulled back muscle.
Oh-I've started drinking more green tea...I fill a water bottle up with some in the morning and I sip on it throughout the day...its really helping to keep me from wanting to snack!!! Maybe I've found another trick to this loosing weight thing, lol.
Sooo yesterday while running on the eliptical I glanced over into the part of the gym that has all of the weight machines...yikes, they looked so scary!! ha...so while I was running I started watching the people and how they used the machines...now whenever I "weight lift" I just use weights and do a few reps w/ them...for legs, I do squats....but I decided I wanted to try the scary machines last night!! So I ended my run short, only 45min instead of 60min. I then spent about 20min on the machines....I LOVE IT!!! I have no idea the proper terms for the ones I tried...but I found two that really worked my inner and outer thighs!! I think I've found a new routine!! Now I'm going to start working that into my excercise....we'll see how it goes :)

Hi LynnZ!

I'm sorry to hear you are having a bad day...sometimes they sneak up on us and it can be overwhelming. You have had a pretty stress-filled week, so no doubt you are feeling the way you are and missing your hubby and hating the idea of being away from him longer.

Glad to hear you found something to help your appetite...should boost your immune system too! Bonus!! :)

Good job on passing on the donuts...funny how that works...but its true...reinforces your inner strength and determination and that feels great!

I hope you are having a better afternoon...take care.

beth

Despite your stress, it seems like today was a great, successful day! Great news, and keep it up--I can't even remember seeing if you had a weight goal and your sigature is cute but not indicative! Please hang in there and i hope your husband comes home soon.

Thanks ladies :)

Yesterday and today were very productive :) I managed to get my new military ID, get post decals for our car, find the pharmacy on base, get my phoneline fixed and get my taxes done. Now if youre familiar w/ the military...the Army to be more specific...then you KNOW how long each one of those processes takes!! I'm getting back more on my taxes than I expected...2800.00!!! Wahooo....I'm paying off our credit card and putting the rest into savings :) Man that feels good!! Now all we have is the mortgage, 2 cars, utilities and insurance. We're going to start buying everying with cash from here on out!!!!! Oh, this feels great!!
Today is rainy and cold out....but I'm still feeling good :) I needed my insurance card to get my taxes prepared and couldnt find it ANYWHERE this morning...I was getting upset so I stopped and said a little prayer and the next place I looked...there it was!! So God and luck are on my side today :p My sister-in-law called and asked if I wanted to go out for pizza tonight...and as badly as I want a big slice of melted cheesey bread goodness...I passed!! Go me!! Instead last night I went ahead and mixed together everything for a greek omlet :)
My husband called this morning as well :) Its soooooooooo good to hear his voice, he sounded a bit better today, said he had gotten a bit of sleep and a few bites of food...so thats good. We talked about him coming home and how excited we are to explore other islands. We got to talk for about 30min, :D so my day feels complete and satisfying.

Breakfast: Banana, 1cup kashi golean, 1cup skim milk.

Snack: A few almonds, grapes and carrots.

Lunch: Spinach w/ 1/4cup cheddar cheese salad, low fat honey mustard dressing and tuna salad

Snack: Almonds, A Flax seed cookie, three jelly beans, a sugar cookie (ugh, they were offered at our divisional meeting!!) and a small bite of a kellogs bar.

Dinner: Greek Omlet (3 egg whites, 1 egg yolk, creamed spinach, onions, mushrooms, feta cheese and pepper to taste )

Kickboxing kicked my butt last night...but man does it feel good to get a great workout in...I dont like hurting the next day...but I know it means I did something right :) ...well as long as I didnt pull a muscle...lol.

Tonight is Fit N Firm and Ab blast...only 2 more months and I'll be hawaii bound...gotta get this body bikini ready!!!!!!!!

Hi Lindsey!

I'm so sorry to hear that your husband may be deployed even longer. My fiance is a Commando in the British Royal Marines and in addition to the present distance between us [I returned to the states in September while he has remained in England], there is always a possibility that he will follow the other 6,000 Marines and be sent to Afghanistan. It is a horrible predicament and one that is entirely impossible for many people to understand. I both respect and admire you for being so incredibly strong and resilient through your times apart. It takes a very special person to stay positive and not fall apart in this kind of situation. You should be very proud of yourself!

I'm so jealous about your kickboxing classes- we don't have any good classes at the "upscale" gym I joined. I emphasized 'upscale' because that was the impression we were given upon joining. However, the classes offered are limited and not particularly enjoyable in my humble opinion!

I admire and look up to your capacity to stay positive and follow your eating plan in such undesirable conditions- I would be befriending Ben and Jerry on a daily basis in your situation! All the best- Bec

Tried to do that on Friday myself...the ID office was having "technical difficulties" and closed for the day. It was a trying day...lots of traffic and then a wasted trip on base....grrrr. Congrats on getting yours! :)

So happy to hear you talked to your hubby and he sounded better. I see you are in SC and you mentioned the other islands...I have been to Hilton Head and fell in love with it...what other islands are near you?

Thank you so Much :) :) Yes...having a spouse in the military is very trying...long distance relationships suck...but having worry of war on top of that, ugh.
I guess I'm trying to turn this deployment into a positive thing for me, ie. losing weight :)

I hope your fiance isnt deployed!!

Well, I'm in SC right now...my family lives in the upstate of SC so while my husband is deployed I moved to SC near Fort Jackson to be close to family and an Army base. However, we're stationed out of Hawaii...so I'll be going back to Hawaii whenever this deployment is over...so those are the islands I'm talking about...we live on Oahu, but kaui, the big island and maui are the islands we're going to explore :)

But...I do like Hilton Head too, and there are a few islands off the coast of SC :)

Yeah, its sooo always up in the air...I wont know if he's being extended probably until right before he is suppose to be home...so I'll be allll excited about him coming home and then BAM..."youre husband is being extended" AHHHH I'll cry :(

Hey love-

I heard on the news this morning that they are, in fact, extending the stay of many soldiers in Iraq- I thought of you and wanted to ascertain if this applied to your hubby? I hope for your sake that it doesnt... Take care

Hiya,
I hope your husband does come home soon, I couldnt even imagine my boyfriend being away for a year!
Well keep up all the good weight loss :)

I dont even have the energy to talk about this.....................I dont even know where to start.

I'm hurting, I'm pissed, I'm frustrated, I'm scared, I'm worried, I'm lonely.....

We found out last night my husband was in fact extended....he will now be home in November......he was deployed LAST august....that makes it a total of 15months.....

I have so many things running through my mind...I can't even get it out in some sensible form or fashion.

I have been sick to my stomache since last night...I havent eaten a thing...not b/c I dont want to...b/c I really cant eat....the second I bring something to my mouth I throw up.

I'm throwing in the towel, somebody move me to canada!!!

PS. I guess I wont have a diary entry for my food consumed today...since I cant eat....but I wanted to post so that I when I look back over my diary I can see my different moods and how things effected me.

PPS. I have a myspace account and the only thing I could think to say is in a blog on my page, feel free to read it....I'm apologizing now for the language and the bluntness....I just don't know where else to turn.

My myspace is:

 :( :(

oh...and I'm sorry if I wont be around much today...I didnt sleep at all last night so I'm getting off of work early, going home and taking an ambien....somebody wake me when its November :(

Okay...I ended up eating a bowl of special K cereal for lunch and a handful of raisins later on in the day...

I'm now going home to take an ambien and sleep the rest of the day away....

Geez, so sorry Lynn. Wish there was something I could do. :(

Keep your chin up. You will be in my prayers.

Oh Lynn,
I'm so sorry to hear this - and can only imagine how hard the 15 months is going to be :(

You guys are in my thoughts,

So sorry Lindsey!

My boyfriend recently found out hs foster brother, who was almost through with his 3 year stint in Iraq, got suckered into signing up for another five years. Boy my BF was depressed! He even cried. It is so stressful to have a loved one in the war and not know if they are 100% safe at any time. Please stay strong.
