Low/Slow Carb Diet

Hello,

I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer.

I am on this slow/low carb diet and I was wondering, since I want to lose body fat, should I have carbs after my workout? or should I avoid that? I know I am eating lots of protein and protein aids in muscle gain but I am hoping that won't happen too much since I am not using very large weights.

Should I refuel myself after a workout to lose body fat?

I have lost 5lbs already I am just worried that I will gain muscle. I need to lose 120 lbs so i am very serious in my weight loss. I have lost 30lb so far.

Hmmm....
I don't know a whole lot about cutting carbs out...but I've always been told that you should eat carbs before you work out. You should always have something to eat before hitting the exercise, as this give you energy to carry on.

What I do is eat a portion of carbs before I go workout (this could be cereal & fruit, oatmeal & fruit, as I normally work out in the morning), and then I make sure that I eat protein within 1hr after my workout (it really should be 30 minutes, but I can never seem to make that time frame)...so I'll have an egg afterwards!

Hopefully that helps!

There is no need to worry about gaining muscle. The amount of muscle you can gain withtout the help of steroids and very extensive weight training is not going to make you bulky.

thanks a lot guys! I am just looking to lose body fat. and with this slow carb diet, which is from tim ferris (dont get me started, i hate and love this guy at the same time. not really love but its a mix feeling) and so far, I lost 5lbs. Before I started, I lost 28-30lbs. I hit a plateau so I figured I would try this with my bf (since hes all in love with this ferriss guy). And on this diet, you can only eat these types of food: legumes, veggies, meat. therefore, theres lots of protein. No fruit, no dairy, no simple carbs. But one day of the week you can eat those and I think that day really helps with the fat loss.

However, I noticed i get hungry a lot of the time Apparently, I am not eating enough. I try to eat as much as beans and veggies (not a lot of meat cause it kinda bugs me to eat so much meat) and spinach. So, I thought that to make the fat burning process work out more effectively, i should add a little carb (maybe a formual) for post workout and have a protein shake in between days (some days I have class or I am at work and dont have the means to make a good lunch)

Would that seem like a good fat loss plan? My postworkout shake I was thinking 80% protein and 20% carbs cause I don't want tooo much carbs within the week since one day I get to eat as much carbs I want.

thanks a lot guys!!

^_^

oh also, i dont know if i mentioned this but I workout 3 days out of the week. 3 days cardio, 2 days strength:1 day of kettlebell that is 30lb and one other day full body workout with 7.5lb and 10lb dumbbell.

I believe Tim actually recommends carbs post workout. You don't really need them after cardio, although it doesn't hurt. Strength training is generally protein (don't need a lot) before, and protein + carbs after. Ironically, chocolate milk is one of the better 'post workout' drinks in terms of muscle retention/development ;) But I personally don't sweat it that much.

Also, it would probably be good to do a strength training workout the one day of the week you eat whatever you want :)

Good job on already losing 30 lbs so far!

Dear Jeanette! you are my favorite!

you give me all sorts of great information and honestly, i certainly appreciate it! ^_^ you make me excited for my new journey

I was thinking I would do my 10 mins of kettlebell on my cheat day since I am eating carbs and what not that day.

and with that you gave me, I figured out what kind of mixes to have for pre workouts and post! Thank you so much!

You should always refuel yourself with lean protein meal or shake after a workout and yes carbs are good as long as they are complex carbs. Broccoli and spinach are always great to have. (request removed)

Glad to help! :) I'm excited for you! It's such a great feeling to realize that you CAN get rid of the weight!

Plus I'm a bit of a nerd, so I like poking around at how things work and try to make improvements to my diet as time goes on :)

Also... today I was reminded of why you let the water cool a little before making protein hot cocoa ;) I brought some in from home and took the hot water from the office cooler... which was really hot, bordering on boiling... yeah... curdled protein powder not so good :D

You don't need the carbs before a workout - you're right in that carbs turn into glycogen which is the muscles fuel, however your body has a supply stored in your muscles and you use that + fat during the workout. Once you're done, the glycogen stores can be replenished but you're not going to hurt yourself by skipping carbs before a workout unless your 'workout' is running a marathon or something :)
