Well one thing that haults my weight loss is not knowing what to eat.....My mother doesn't make much money at all and I pretty much have to eat what I can get and usually the cheapest isn't the healthiest...any suggestions?

Many canned foods are cheap and healthy. Tuna, canned vegetables, soups. Fresh and frozen can be expensive, but you can get boneless skinless chicken pretty cheap when its on sale. Best advice I can give you is to read the grocery store sale ads when they come in the mail, and make your purchases when the price is right.

Bianca, you don't have to have a lot of money to do this, just common sense and some improvisions. Look at the back of labels and start reading the fat and calorie contents. Choose things with lower fat and calories . Avoid all fried foods, and junk food. Instead start eating apples, they fill you up.

canned beans in tomato sauce. make sure it's without pork or molasses. just tomato sauce. that's very healthy as a protein dish.

and veggies don't have to be expensive. you can get alot of cheap fresh veggies if you buy things in season. for example, it's spring/summer right now. you can get corn soon for 12/$2. Just watch the sales on the flyers.

this was a great thread to start - especially since cheap calories are usually the ones that are bad for us! (think carbs and starches and fast food)...

Frozen veggies are usually pretty cheap also, and can be bought in bulk when they are on sale and kept! Bulk rice/couscous/and other grains can be very filling, and buying more at once helps with the costs as well - just add some spices or lemon/lime juice to jazz up the flavor and serve with chicken or what not.

I totally can empathize with you Hybrid! I live with my mom too, and BOTH of us are in university right now, so yeah, money's a little tight! All the suggestions here were really good ones -- always scour the flyers every week and get the best deals while they're on, especially on things that can be frozen so you can buy a ton and eat them slowly.

Yay I'm not the only poor one ;)

Frozen food is the best thing ever....We have to get alot of that because everything else spoils (we usually do monthly shopping :( ). My mother always ends up buying ground beef which isn't very health cautious....My friend has informed me on buying frozen fish. Which is better the chicken or fish?....

Sticking with frozen things I'm thinking of investing money in a Miracle Bullet so that I can make sorbet out of frozen berries lol

Frozen fish is healthier, but doesn't always taste the best. You have to find what brands are good out of those available in your area. Frozen chicken breast fillets aren't bad either. Keep in mind you want to buy items that have not been breaded or fried. If your mom insists on buying ground beef, have her buy ground turkey instead.

Does the ground turkey taste similiar to the ground beef?

I don't buy ground beef as I don't eat red meat, so I make spahgetti, lasagna, taco's etc with either ground chicken or ground turkey and my kids actually prefer it to ground beef, which is fine by me as it's healthier!

Ground turkey and chicken can be pretty expensive you could always get lea ground beef or extra lean ground beef if its available in your grocery store its cheaper than turkey and chicken :eh:
