Hi Bronagh

For many of us food control and increased exercise go hand in hand. Exercise can make you feel good about yourself and that can have an impact on what you want to eat. Sometimes we only want to "comfort eat" because we do not feel good.

Also the fact that you are doing exercise burns up calories which means that you can eat more calories. You can then eat quite a lot of healthy food which can not only help your weight but also things like your complexion.

I suggest that you look at the different sections of the forum - particularly the areas devoted to exercise and nutrition. See if you can find a form of exercise that appeals.

It is a shame that you feel that sometimes food is your only source of happiness. Believe me - there are plenty of people here who have resorted to being a bit too friendly with food over the years. It can be a false friend since it can lead to serious obesity problems which in turn can impact your health.

You may be better served finding a better friend. Maybe someone that you know would like to lose a little weight too. Maybe someone from school or maybe you have been working in addition to school. If not - it may be worth joining an exercise class or slimming club. If you are a little shy - maybe the club leader could introduce you to someone of a similar age. The internet may well give phone numbers for local slimming club leaders - phone before you join and ask if they have other members of your age. It is just an idea.....

Good luck.

Best wishes
Margaret

You sound a little 'lost at sea' and unsure of where to start.

If I were you, I would set yourself a simple..*simple* target...like losing 2 lbs.

Ask yourself, can I exercise enough and control my eating to lose 2 lbs?
The answer is absolutely YES. Of course you can, and you know it.

Make this your target. And when you are about to turn to your favourite comfort food, ask yourself, would I rather eat this, or achieve my target?
You will still slip up from time to time, but you'll hit your goal before you thought you would.

After you lose those 2 lbs, you'll start to not get comforted by eating too much, because you'll know that eating that much is in conflict with your target to lose x lbs. Don't let the part of your mind that gets comforted with the over-eating win over your real/true desire.

I used to over-eat like *crazy*. Now that I stopped, and I am losing weight consistently, I learned two things:

1. Keeping extra weight on actually takes work -- you have to eat more than you need.

2. The over-eating is going to satisfy a part of my personality that I don't really want to focus on...a part that shouldn't rule my conscious actions. Its the immature/selfish 'me' that wants to eat like crazy. But the mature/conscious/smart me just says, 'no way, I don't need that stuff'. And then I move on to something I would rather be doing than sitting and eating. There's a lot more fun stuff to focus your limited time on, trust me!

Good luck!!
Andrew
