Lost alot but stuck?

hey guys, hope you all enjoyed the holidays! :D

My questions are these:

I've lost 55lbs and my waist is still the same size as it was. Granted I went from a 40 to a 34/36 now and I only weigh 185lbs instead of 240lbs. I noticed that my thighs also have the fat on them when I workout 3-5 days a week.

I can now do 2 miles in 24mins instead of 34 but I'm not seeing anymore weight loss or inches being lost. I've been doing more weights and crunches/sit ups to help with the cardio. Normally I only eat 3 meals a day but some days I eat a snack or two during school if I get super hungry.

I'm just wondering am I stuck at 185lbs for good or will I keep going down and losing the fat? And lastly will this gut ever go away and with hard work can I develop a 6-pack? If it helps any, my dad, grandfather, and uncle are all big people, but now I consider myself normal and all my friends do too.

Thank you to everyone that helps :)

It's said that 6 pack abs are built in the kitchen, not the gym - so I'd suggest measuring and tracking all of your food intake so you know where you're at.

There are two likely causes. I hope the cause is not (1), which is that you have been on a starvation diet and screwed up your metabolism. Possibility (2) is an easier fix, which is that your basal metabolic rate has decreased as you have lost weight, meaning that you now need to cut your calorie consumption further to sustain a caloric deficit.

I recently posted about weight loss on my blog, which seems to have been timely! Take a look to see if it helps you out:

I would never starve myself, so don't worry about that :) I know if you do not get food into your system your body will eat the muscle causing you to get large again, right?

As for eating, I would say I try to eat healthy. I usually have frosted flakes with a banana for breakfast, school lunch which is normally a cheeseburger and a milk for me and for dinner I eat only one plate. Sometimes I will have a snack during the day if I get hungry before I run.

Exercise wise, I do anywhere from 2-4 miles on my treadmill and I also have a gym membership but have not gone in a few weeks because my family has been sick so I have been running and using my 15lbs weights to do squats or curls to balance out. I also know sit-ups do nothing for your stomach fat, but I do them anyways as an exercise.

In all...it's just frustrating me that I've worked so hard these last 7 months and my stomach is still the same size in my eyes. It just feels like I will never lose it.

Anymore suggestions/advice would be gladly appreciated.

I would suggest you look hard at your food choices. Frosted flakes have a lot of sugar, even unfrosted flakes and the cheeseburger bun are starchy carbs, meaning they have a relatiely high glycemic index. You should learn about glycemic index and stear toward carbs with as low glycemic index. You might also want to minimize saturated fats in your diet. You can't go wrong if you stick with natural, whole foods like protien sources (meat, dairy, eggs, nuts) and vegetables and fruits and stay away from processed foods like flakes, bread, etc.

I think I want to cut out alot of carbs from my diet and try eating alot more fruits and veggies.

But my parents keep telling me to keep doing what I am and my stomach will go away overtime but I find that hard to believe. This is so strange to me because I'm only 15 and it seems so hard. But believe me, I try so hard and it's frustrating that my gut won't go away.

hmm, while I'm not doubting you here, the starvation diet does indeed decrease metabolic reaction speed, but cutting the calories further? I don't think so. a "Starvation diet" is called one because of the caloric restriction. If one were to cut calories further, the body will go into a state of starvation, which will lower even further metabolic reactions, lower heart rate, decrease energy expenditure, decreasing BMR, equaling more energy stored and more energy kept. Not to mention the incredibly hard time you will have trying to exercise, it's just abysmal trying to exercise with not enough calories AKA energy. Instead of cutting the calories, which we need for more than to just to expend and look good, we need them for fuel, namely for the brain, which uses up to 80% of glucose everday, no glucose, lower brain function. Do exercises that might involve synergistic muscle actions, like holding a car back with your entire body...just kidding. But if you want to use energy (burn calories) namely from FFA (free fatty acids) incorporate cardio. Studied have shows that mitochondria receptors open on even Type II muscle fibers (fast twitch) allowing more fat to be used for energy in working muscles.
