Hello everyone,

My name is Stephanie and this is my first time on here.

My orignal goal was to loose 30 lbs...well.....

I started working out and eating better back in February of this year and so far i have lost 38 lbs (WOOHOO..lol). I am 21 years old & 5'8" i started out at 196.5 and am now down to 158.5. I dont have a tiny frame, meaning i have wider shoulders and wider hips so i was wondering if i should keep trying to loose weight or if i am at a good stopping point where i am now?

any information or suggestions would be gretly appreciated :)

Thanks!

Well, you can't really measure body fat from a formula on the internet. You really need to have your body composition measured in person for it to be accurate. Calipers or an electrostatic device are the most common.

I'd also say it's about how you feel and look. Are you comfortable where you are? Do your clothes fit well? Are you happy with your level of fitness? I think those are more important than numbers, really. The numbers are just a way to quantify the change. :)

:| I didn't realize there was a way to calculate body fat percentage via a formula on the link I provided. lol opps.. I was certain it had to be measured with some sort of device like Kara said.

I agree though, if you feel good about the way you look and feel already maybe its just time to kick back a bit do some steady maintainning. :)

yeah if you scroll down on that link theres a calculation link, and it asks for your height, and a few different measurements and stuff..lol
& i am a lot happier with how i feel now, rather then how i felt 38lbs ago, just trying to decide if i want to try and loose some more weight or not....or i i NEED to loose anymore weight acording to charts, b/c every chart that i look at says a different amount..lol

Yeah, see I wouldn't use the charts to determine "need". If you can have your body fat measured, then I would do it .. just so you have another variable to add. More information is always better.

But ultimately I'd base need on how you feel about where you are. You might decide to lose a few more pounds and then decide that you don't like that as well and you'll tweak your diet accordingly to allow a regain. I know a lot of people who were in that situation - weren't sure if they should lose more, dropped another 5-8 lbs, and decided no, that wasn't going to work for them. :)

I think if you need to lose any it shouldn't be a whole lot more. I am 5'9" and male, medium frame but with wider shoulders like you, and I recall how I looked way back when I was 165 (and your age) and it didn't leave much room to lose a lot. I know males get a few more pounds for muscle weight and I have an inch on you, but females get some extra weight in the bust and hips so I can't imagine anything under 150-155 is liable to look good on you.

Of course, everyone is different and carries it different. I do think Kara and the others are dead on too. If your metrics are in a healthy range, e.g. not overweight or obese, then worry more about aesthetics to make your final determination. Also, the "medically correct" weights are usually a bunch of huey IMO.
