losing weight

so i have been on and off diets for a few years and i cant seem to stay on a diet to save my life. I really dont know anything about dieting all i know is that i eat a lot of fried junk food, drink alot of soda and that that is bad :( . I am 23 years old 4'11" and i weigh about 165. I think my healthy weight should be about 115. My problem is i feel so lost as to what i can and cant eat and this whole counting calories thing is pretty frustrating to keep up with and confusing to me. also i am looking for the cheapest way of eating right. if anyone can give me some examples of a daily meal plan that would help alot. Also if anyone can tell me what i should be doing to work out. i know its all pretty much about cardio but how long and what? I'm also planning on joining a gym and working out mostly in the morning. I am pretty clueless as you can see so any advice is much appreciated. thanks! :D

My advice.. stop drinking coke right now!.. I felt lost too. I was 215 and I felt awful and depressed.. but I kept drinking coke.. then I was 230.. and I kept drinking coke.. I hit 275 before I realized how foolish I had been. I could have stopped the bad eating and 4-5 coke a day habit when I was at 215! I would have been in shape in no time! Now I have to lose 60(actually 50-already lost 10) pounds just to feel "lost" again..lol.. so do yourself a favor and cut out the unhealthy stuff. All the cokes and fried food in the world dont give one the feeling that one gets from being comfortable in their own skin.

hi! i'll give you a few quick tips.

1. the search button might be your best friend. i'm sure this topic has been covered extensively already.
2. height/weight ratio doesn't always mean anything. why? i know a guy who's 5'8" 195lbs and obese. i know another guy who's 5'8" 215lbs and all muscle. get your body fat percentage from a trainer; take your body weight, 165, and multiply that by the body fat percentage to get the body fat weight in pounds. obtain your resting metabolic rate (RMR) by this: RMR = 370 + (21.6 X fat free mass (kg)). i'm guessing you are a typical 43% bodyfat based on your height and weight. with this, you should eat no more and no less than 1200 calories.
3. do NOT eat more than 20% calories from fat (no more than 10% from saturated fat).
4. cardio (such as walking or running) is ok. plyometrics (jump rope, aerobic-type stuff) is better. cardio, plyometrics, and weight resistance is best.

good luck.

My opinion: decide once that you are going to follow so and so healthy diet plan (maybe of your own - need not be any formal or professional one – simple and cheap – from posts in this forum) and then go along with it for at least 3 months. As others have said, make sure your caloric intake is what you need minus appx 500. Once you are in it, try not to think about it everyday. The more you think about it during your daily activities, you won't enjoy what you're doing, you won't be satisfied in general and then you will have doubts and you will easily get off from it.

If you can't quit soda completely, drink diet coke or diet something. But if it has become an addiction, drink 1 serving less every week. Some people say diet soda also has calories, but I think it doesn't. Of course too much is never good.

As the previous post says, search the forum to find where you stand and take a decision about your diet, cardio and weight training schedule. If you haven’t exercised before, slowly build up. Don’t rush in.

The most important thing I would say is enjoy the whole thing instead of thinking it is some kind of restriction on your life or routine. Find a partner to go with you to a gym. Some sort of motivation so that you don't feel that way.

Best wishes.

Hey Sonia3110-
Most people can't stay on a diet- they're unrealistic! I had to get into the mindset of changing habits little by little, and choosing healthier foods, and allowing myself "bad foods" in moderation! The thing that has been most effective for me to lose weight- get a notebook and record everything you eat w/ calories next to it (I use calorie-counter.com to approximate most things). This helps to get an understanding of what you're putting into your body. It also helps you to pay attention to serving sizes- once I started doing that I realized I had gotten used to cleaning my plate when I would eat out- which in this day of gigantic portion sizes was way to much food for me! You can also record your workouts. My workout tips- 1. Make yourself a slammin mix of fast tempo songs to get you moving 2. Switch your workout A LOT. This will ensure that you are constantly using new muscles, and most importantly will keep you from getting bored!

Your food plan is generally the first place to look. Whole, natural foods are the most efficient in giving your body what it needs to get the job done.

Some protein examples: meat, dairy, nuts - (very) lean red meat, chicken, fish, yogurt, cottage cheese, egg whites

Some carbohydrate examples: fruit for simple carbs; rice, potatoes, bread (whole wheat or whole grain, NOT white) for complex carbs

Some healthy fat sources: nuts and seeds - almonds, flax seeds

A good percentage (of calories you've taken in) would be 40% carbs, 30% proteins, 30% healthy fats.

Eating 5 or 6 small meals a day keeps your metabolism active, thus causing you to burn more calories over the course of the day.

for me, first came the exercise. very simple- i started walking, upgraded to jogging, now i love to run. i never ate terrible to begin with, but once i started exercising, i craved healthier foods and felt disgusting if i anything that wasn't. it's strange, but you do get used to eliminating junk food and don't need it as much. everyone is different, but this worked for me.

is a really good tool to use, I've been using it every day for about a week. Its a lot easier than manually counting calories and it seems to be the most extensive free one (though they do have a premium membership deal).

I too was lost once or twice, and I know from experience that diets dont work. You need to make a change. Summer after my freshmen year of high school I was 5'11" and 250 lbs, I am now around 6'3" and about 203 and falling. You just gotta realize what you are doing isnt good and decide to stick with it. The hardest part is the first week, once you get through that it gets easier.

Whats working for me is eating 5 times a day (roughly every 3 hours) and shooting for 200-300 calories per time. That will keep your metabolism up all day. Couple that with some circuit training and cardio and the pounds will fall off.

Another thing that will help is surrounding yourself with things that help you stay on task. I wear bracelets that remind me of things and people I love and that helps me to pull through the hard times. Pictures will help too, whatever keeps you motivated. Last thing is you gotta believe in yourself. It wont be easy, I will tell you that straight up, but arent the best things in life ones you have to work hardest for? Once you are past the first like 15 lbs mark and you can physically see yourself changing its a great feeling.

1. that link doesn't work.
2. what do you mean diets don't work? of course they work!
3. how you eat may not be suitable for someone else, as we are of different shapes, sizes, and gender.

1) Link fixed
2) I meant fad diets... my bad.
3) Well, as you can see I did say, "Whats working for me..." before hand. I did have a parenthetical note afterward sayin that it might not be the right calorie count for them, but then I looked up and someone (you actually) wrote above that assuming a certain set of situations, the thread starter should get about 1200 calories. Well, if you eat 5 times a day and average 240 calories per time, that makes 1200. Obviously you will never get exactly 240 calories each meal, I find a range like that is a good thing to shoot for. Also, I know I am not alone in the "eat more times per day and less eat time" boat, I come across that most often in weight loss articles. Just my two cents homie.

Ok one very important thing I have figured out about this site, you won't be told WHAT to do here. People will offer links/suggestions/advice that you can either take or not. I've been doing a LOT of reading to learn stuff on here since I joined, constantly seeking a direction on my diet and work outs. I have figured out a workout regime that I feel will be good for me to get back into myself(I am FINALLY taking control back of my life as of my 22nd b-day yesterday and I can feel the change already, I was freaking so lost.). My plan might not really fit everyone's advice 100% but I also have had good LUCK with the stuff I tried and refuse to lose it entirely(I like long distance running and it WILL return to my workouts at some point). Be ready to try new things period. Hell I am even trying to get vegetables(ugh) into my diet and they disgust me.

Morning workouts=good(THis way your day doesn't give you an out away from this.)

Start small, finish big. No one can jump into the routines I've seen by the advanced people here and some can't even jump into the ones I was at. Figure out how much you know in whatever area you are focusing on, and push yourself to be better. Find goal, find a way to achieve that goal, and GO.

Good luck. Try and search for anything you need first.

Utterly. Its like the same thing as a normal person consuming a dose of poison, immediate revolt. I feel sick for 30 minutes from one bite.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I am trying to incorporate them into my diet, but it's rough. Even the smell of most veggies makes me sick- like when my roommate steams broccoli....

Any suggestions on making veggies taste better, and still keeping them healthy?

I was thinking to post a few vegetable recipes. By no means I am an expert cook but I don't like to eat most vegetables raw, especially for dinner. I like to try stuff out and it works after 2-3 tries.

Let me give you one example. I made this last Saturday and it came out pretty good. I don't know if it is the most healthy way to cook this one but I try to keep bad ingredients out so it should be.
--------
It is called "Eggplant/brinjal Potato Curry" or "Bengan Alu Subzi" in India.

You'll need: 2 eggplants, 1 onion, 3 medium potatoes, 2 medium tomatoes, 4 garlic cloves, 3 medium green peppers (not bell pepper), 1/2 lemon, some cilantro, some olive oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chili powder, cumin powder (dhania-jeera powder), salt, sugar (+/- ingredients based on your requirements)

All veggies except onion and garlic should be washed thoroughly.

Method:
1. Cut eggplants into small pieces (not too small) and soak them into water.
2. Cut onion, peppers, potato and garlic. Garlic should be extra small. Peel potatoes before cutting. No need to boil them if cut small.
3. Cut tomatoes (medium).
4. Keep cilantro (wash thoroughly and once a bit dry remove the bottom part without leaves and then chop the remaining thin) and lemon ready (remove seeds with knife).
5. So now all vegetables are ready. Put olive oil in a non-stick pan. Make sure the pan is big enough and not wet. Keep medium flame. Once oil is heated (not a lot), put mustard seeds. When you hear first mustard seed exploding, put cumin seeds. Once they are little brown, put veggies from step 2. Don't keep the flame too high. Mix well, cover it and let it cook until it becomes a soft. Especially potatoes, since they're not boiled. Time to time check and don't let it stick at the bottom.
6. When step 5 is on, remove water from the eggplants. Just drain the water, don't squeeze them.
7. Add tomatoes to the mix in step 5. Mix well. Squeeze the lemon. Mix well. Cover it and let it cook until tomatoes are a bit mushed.
8. Add eggplants. Add chili powder and cumin powder. Measure should be as per your spice index. Salt to taste. Add 2 small spoons of sugar. No sugar if you don't like a little sweet tinge.
9. If you want to eat this with rice (need gravy), add water accordingly. If you don't want too much gravy, add little bit of water. In the later case, add enough water so that it doesn't stick and doesn't become completely dry. I like the gravy one.
10. Mix well. There should be no lumps of spices. Cover it and let it cook for 15 minutes on medium-high flame.
15. Once done, taste it. If issues, go to 'Adjustments'. It it's good, turn it off, cover it and let it cool down for 15 minutes.

Adjustments:
If something tastes raw, give it more time.
Boil it (not covered) if you need to get rid of some water.
Add some water, if it became too dry. Mix well and cook for some more time.
Add some sugar if it became too spicy.
--------

This one takes a bit more time. It may serve 2-3 people (depends). You can eat with rice or bread or whatever you like. If you don't have the spices, you can buy from Walmart of wherever you like. Supermarkets do have spices, but quantity is too less for the price. If you go to an Indian store, you will get better quality/quantity/price ratio. It tastes different too. Cumin powder is called dhania-jeera powder (dhanajiru) in Indian stores.

Long one, indeed. Hope you like it.

yum!

Now that sounds good. You should post some more recipes for Indian food- I LOVE it! Since I've left NY I can't find any good Indian restaurants....

You could try this veggie biryani - just be careful of eating too much basmati rice... (mmmm basmati rice...)
