Losing Weight with Health Problems

Hello everyone. I currently weigh 213 lbs and am trying to eventually hit 140.

I have a medical condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It's a collagen disease that makes me dislocate joints from the simplest tasks, like walking across the room or getting milk from the fridge. As I'm sure you can imagine I have a VERY difficult time exercising. Even yoga is too much some time.

I also have Adrenal Insufficiency and am on steroids to control it, and they cause weight gain.

Does anyone know a good way to lose weight with these problems?

Nothing we say could ever substitute for asking a qualified doctor. The simplest way to lose weight is to eat less, exercising is strictly speaking not mandatory, but again because of your conditions dieting in and of itself may cause big problems (because of deficiencies etc), thus the best thing to do is really ask a doctor.

I agree with the above post, your first port of call should be a qualified doctor.

However I don't think you should expect them to have a great deal of detailed information on dieting persay. however they will be able to tell you what is and is not advisable nutritionally/physically with regards to your conditions.

So then when you come back to the forum to gather more information on what you should eat and what exercise, if any, you should take you can bare in mind your doctors advice and apply to yourself the techniques that are safe and relevant to yourself personally.

I hope that's helped and wish you luck with your endeavors.

I agree with the others that seeing a Dr, nutritionist and perhaps and Exercise Physiologist would be the best place to start.

Diet is a good place to start, count your calories and limit your intake to at least kick start your metabolism. Start at a higher level and work your way down.

Although I don't have a similar condition to you I had a herniated disc in my lower back and surgery last year to fix it. It is still a very weak spot right in the centre of all those core muscles and still causes a lot of debilitating pain if I push it too far. I've been unable to do anything at all since May last year and only now am slowly getting back into things, but one 20min session of exercise leaves me even worse for the following three days so it's slow going. Walking puts too much pressure through my spine, anything that involves twisting, bending, lifting, because it all engages the core muscles which are all connected to that one spot in my back that can blow out at any time. My only 'safe' option that was offered to me was walking laps in a pool. Not swimming because it overextends my back, just walking. Takes all the pressure of your joints and also adds a bit of resistance. Doens't have to be a lot to get my heart pumping so I've found it really good. Maybe you could ask the professionals if pool work is something that your body can handle?

Good Luck and I hope you find a solution :)
