losing weight AND inches

i posted this a long time ago here then lost the site. but im back now :)
anyway, from april 2004-oct 2004 i lost 40 pounds and have since been maintaining the final weight i reached of around 150. i went from a size 14-16 to a size 12 which seems very strange to me considering the amount of pounds i lost. due to health problems (with my MS) and now bursitis in both shoulders i have not done too much exercise except for my treadmill. yeah i lost a lot of weight, but i did not lose that many inches and i need to lose several more inches to get to a size 8 which is a healthy nice looking size for me at 5'5" tall.

i know i need to lose fat and gain muscle to lose inches, so what can i do without hurting my shoulders too much and still lose inches? i am already only eating about 1200-1500 calories a day but that isnt enough to lose more weight because i have just been maintaining on that.

I think it's best if you do some weight training to firm you up, and create lean muscles. The best way is to probably get some dumbells (whatever size is comfortable for you. Test them first before buying) and lift less weight, but more reps, so its less stress, and impact. I hope that will work for you. I'm not sure how bad your shoulders are. But I hope it helps, and good luck!
 
You might try to do walking or some type of cardio along with some kind of toning exercise. Just do what is comfortable for you.
 
For your lifting do everything within the 12-15 rep range. Make sure your drinking plenty of water. And Eat small meals every few hours. I have no clue what bursitis is but if you can swim laps its an excellent cardio workout. My little old 90 year old grandma can swim like 100 laps doggy paddling.
 
i use 3 lb dumbells and do 15 reps x2
and your 90 yr old grandma sounds healthier than me! no way i could do that.

Bursitis is the painful inflammation or irritation of the bursa. The bursa is a soft, fluid-filled sac that covers and cushions the movement between the bones, tendons and muscles near the joints.

i eat every few hrs, and drink 68 oz of water daily.
 
oohh.. haha thanks wonderwoman, that clears things up for me. Haha like errtu140, I had no idea what that was. Anyways Maybe you can start by doing 5lb dumbells, then 8, then 10. If they are comfortable. I usually do 12 reps x3 using 5lb dumbells, besides bicep curls, I would use 10. But thats for me. I hope you find something that works out for you
 
Well ya learn something every day. Just make sure ya push yourself as much as possible on those weights. If your on your 15th rep and you can do 4-5 more then you need a heavier weight. It's all about pushing your body harder to make it adapt to it's new conditions that your putting it under. Just do what you can, I've never had bursitis so I have no clue what your going through. And I would recommend 3 sets, burns more calories, besides who likes calories anyways?
lol exactly 68 oz of water daily? because 69oz would be way too much but 68 is perfect.
 
thanks all for your comments. i was thinking about going up to 5 pounds and now i think i will. i forgot to add that i also do 15 crunches x3 every day and leg lifts 15 each leg on back and then 15 on each side. as for the water, the bottles actually say 1 pint, 0.9 oz so i just round up to 17 oz x 4 bottles a day. is that too much water?

maybe i should start doing squats too with the 5 pounders on my shoulders? that shouldnt hurt too much since i wont really be rotating the cuff, just holding them there.
 
squats are good, as long as you do them properly. Try and do them infront of a mirror and when you go down, your back should be straight, and your legs shoud be bent at a 90 degree angle. You will feel the burn when you do this!
