Hey everyone. I'm a 36 year old women, 5'3" and currently weigh 146 pounds. I have been trying to lose some weight during the past year and have talked myself into that I have but the scale just doesn't agree. I'm trying to stay away from these magical diet programs that promise you all the weight loss in no time as long as you have a major credit card on hand. I tried diet pills about 10 years ago but had to run to my physician because I experienced heard problem, so this is a no no for me. I'm just looking for some support and help from other members that can keep me on the right path and keep me from cheating myself and finding those wonderful excuses that allow me to skip my exercise and reach for that extra pieces of chocolate.

Thanks
Silke

Welcome to the forums!

Some of the best advice out there for people who are just getting started or who have started and just aren't seeing results, is to sign up for a free account on fitday.com. It will allow you to input all the foods you eat and will give you the calories and calories from fat/protein/carbohydrates for everything you eat. Make sure you are burning off more calories than you intake, and voila--weight loss. It has probably been the most beneficial tool that I've found so far in my 6 weeks of being "on the wagon".

Definitely stay away from the "get thin quick" schemes. It's good that you know to steer clear, they're not just a waste of money but (as you know) are potentially dangerous.

Another thing that I've found useful in holding myself accountable is having a journal in the diary section of the forums. It allows me to share what's worked, what hasn't worked, my successes and failures. It also inspires others to continue on their journeys and gives others an opportunity to offer advice.

I'm confident that you'll find the support you're looking for. Best wishes to you :)

Hi Silke,

I think you're very smart to steer clear of weight loss pills and gimmicks. Like Oprah said (just a paraphrase, here): "If there were a weight loss pill that worked, I'd know about it." I don't remember the exact words, but basically, there is no magic pill.

I agree with Addiecakes that it comes down to the calories in vs. calories out. It's really pretty simple when you sit down and do the math. The trick is finding all of your favorite ways to cut calories from food and burn extra calories.

The other trick is to avoid plateaus and burnout by making sure you don't starve yourself. You need to eat enough calories to fuel your fat-burning fire (your metabolism) while still keeping a caloric deficit.

Best wishes- you can do it!

I forgot to mention- you're probably right that you lost fat. Depending on the scale to judge fat loss is foolish. Get yourself a tape measure or an Accu-measure body fat caliper, and you'll get a better gauge of your progress.

This is important because if you think you're not losing weight you're more likely to quit your fitness regimen. Often you'll be making great progress and not even realize it because you're trading fat for muscle. That'll change your size and shape even if your weight isn't budging.
