Looking for answers

Ok, so I started loosing in February and by now (May) I have lost 50lb. (started at 310 now am 260) I am 66in tall with a larger body frame. I lost only two sizes in my pants so I don't know if I lost a lot of muscle or if that is a normal amount of inches to loose with 50lbs? I have been working out regularly for the most part (a lot of walking and some cardio) and have stuck to around 1500 calories a day. I just don't want to loose a lot of muscle. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated:)
 
I think it just depends on the person. I know for myself I started at a 22 pant, and 30 lbs later I'm an 16/18 pant, but my top half hasn't dropped as much (a 3XL to a 2XL).

You were pretty big to begin with, so 50 lbs coming off of you isn't going to make as much of a visual difference as someone who was say 180 lbs and got down to 130 lbs.

Though 1500 calories is probably too low for your someone your size.
 
I thought that maybe that wasn't enough calories but I am still eating. I eat mostly vegetables and have reduced the size of my portions i try to eat something bad like once a week to just spike my metabolism. I don't really know if that's good or not. I've lost but since I was big to start with the lbs. come off just from small adjustments to your diet and activity.
 
Couple of comments....

1. The calorie intake is low given your stats. Is it going to kill you? Certainly not. Generally though, I like to see people eating as much food as they can while still triggering fat loss.

2. The more "severe" the deficit, the greater attention you have to pay to nutritional quality.

3. Nutrient-dense, calorie-sparse foods like veggies are great for satiety at a low caloric cost... but you also have to ensure your getting adequate protein, good fats, etc.

4. Losing lean body mass is a necessity... especially when you're larger. You can minimize muscle loss by doing some resistance training and eating adequate protein.

5. Inches lost will vary from person to person, as noted above.
 
Thanks for the informative comments. I heard lean protein is what helps you tone and firm so I'll probably try to incorporate more turkey and chicken in my diet. My only conern with the low amount of calories is that it will slow my metabolism, I know working out will help keep your metabolism up but I don't know if that's enough.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I suppose you can say it accomplishes this in a roundabout way.

Becoming lean/tone is a function of maintaining muscle while losing fat. Losing fat requires an energy/calorie deficit. Preserving muscle requies adequate protein (and some resistance training).

My only conern with the low amount of calories is that it will slow my metabolism, I know working out will help keep your metabolism up but I don't know if that's enough.

Metabolism will ALWAYS slow in response to dieting.
