I'm new to the area and I'm shopping around for gyms... is there a way to compare gyms without having to actually go to each one individually? is there like a website that does this? I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me.
There isn't a great way to do it yet other than visiting each one. There is a site called that has a good directory of gyms with hours and amenities and apparently a customer rating system, though it doesn't look like there are any actual customer reviews. It would be nice if they would add something like this.
Yes ^^^ because when I've joined gyms, most of the stuff that appeals to me or matters the most is usually not listed in the promotional material. I'm interested in what it's like in the early, early morning hours in terms of equipment, parking, safety. I'm also interested in when that particular gym's peak hours are (in terms of cardio equipment and showers) and the general mood of the place; for example, at all costs, I avoid places like Curves or pick-up sort of gyms. (My one friend belongs to a virtual singles gym. The women there apply makeup and do their hair before they exercise, if they exercise--she said that most of them go and hang out at the sports-drink bar. )
I'd also want to go and get a sense of the other members and I'd do that when I plan to use the facilities. I go to my gym at at 5:30am and at that time, it's filled with people who are 35-50 and who mostly swim or use the cardio room; same gym at night (between 5-7pm) and the average age of the members using the facilities dips to maybe 21-30 and they mostly use the cardio room and weights; same gym on Sunday mornings is packed and is a madhouse--you can't really be effective there on Sunday mornings. Knowing all of that about a gym is something that you can mostly only observe and it all makes a difference to me.
You gotta love those singles gyms... i belonged to one of those for a while, and going to the gym was more of a social event than anything else... personally, I don't want to talk to anyone when i'm working out. I get in the zone and I'm pretty antisocial for that hour-hour 1/2... thanks for the info, though, i just wanted to know if there were an easier way to find gyms around me. I'll check out gymticket when i get off work.
Singles gym huh?? Sounds like an excuse to show off your guns without being the wierdo in a wife-beater at the club.
... I like it!
In all honesty though, there's nothing that a website can tell you about a gym that really matters. You have to talk to the staff, see what their clientele is like and make the decision for yourself.
^^^ My friend's singles gym organizes after-exercising events. Usually they're some sort of bar thing followed by a dinner thing followed by a club thing.
At my gym, there is this group of people who are there with me when the place opens each morning, so they seem dedicated. But they'll go to the weight rooms or the cardio area and bounce from person to person and they'll talk. No exercise; just talk. Some of them wear weight belts.
When I move to a new spot I usually try and check them out at the times I would be using them a few times to see if I'll be able to get done smoothly and efficiently a few times. I don' t think any site can really tell you that kind of thing. Like if they have the best equipment in the world its not worth antyhing if you can't get near it.
