lifting light?

I was told by my friend that if you lift light and do more reps you will get more muscle than if you lift heavy.. is this true? can someone explain to me

Good question. Boy is this a change from the usual question about high reps. It is usually, "Is it true that high reps is better for toning?" That is why I love this industry, there is always twists!

That myth has been debunked loooong ago.

Not true at all my friend. 8-12 reps is plenty for hypertrophy.

like i can do 30lb dumbells for curls and other exercises, but is it better to do them with 20s or 25lbs? and do then more times like if i were to do the 30lbs i would do it 20 sets of 3s but is it better to do the 20lbs with like 20 sets of 5 or something? sorry if im confusing you guys i dont really know how to explain it

a lot of reps is toning muscles right? for me I dont want to be a body builder with big muscles for my sport (softball), so if I do a lot of reps, would that be good? like 2 sets of 25 reps per exercise for example with 60-80% weight that I can lift without it being too heavy or too light?

If it were only that easy. Lift heavy weights=be huge...Its not and its not even possible for 99% of women to get bigger by lifting weights. This myth needs to be nipped in the butt.

When you're just starting out you can do high reps/light weight, preparing your body (muscles, ligaments, joints, tendons) for the loads to come. Eventually you'll want to drop into the lower reps for strength and/or size.

So my answer is also no.

First, stay off the isolation exercises. Single joint exercises like bicep curls are not going to give you the body you are after. Focus on compound, multi-joint movements. Things like squats, deadlifts, horizontal pressing and pulling, vertical pressing and pulling.

Secondly, where did you get the idea to do 20 sets of a single exercise?? That is not what you are looking for.

No, higher reps does not equal toning. See my first post. Muscle either grows or they don't grow...simple as that! Being toned or defined is a function of nutrition and body fat reduction, not weight training.

Heydude...
you need to be more specific in your posts. "less weight, more reps" really doesn't tell us anything. "more reps than what? 1? 30? a bazillion?"

As a general guideline, teh 'low rep' range of 4-6 reps is for building strength. medium rep range of 8-12 is for building size. 15+ reps is for endurance training.

there is NO rep scheme for toning. as already stated, toning is achieved through shedding body fat to reveal the muscle underneath. the lower your bodyfat, the more 'toned' the muscle appears because it shows better.
