Lift, Train, Fitness

Thanks Tru,
Always interesting to see more details about your training. I had heard about the fast vs slow twitch and the lack of benefits in static stretching before but the massage effect wasn't something I had heard but it makes sense as you explain it.
I can't imagine why your neighbor would light a fire, even a controlled one, when there are already fires out of control. Around here when it gets dry during forest fire season, they usually put a fire ban in effect

Mary, well done improving your numbers

Some massage therapists would have you think that massage is the answer to everything but it is just a small part of things and can be just as harmful as it is beneficial especially for people with particular health conditions. I have to be very careful and have full insurance cover which you cannot get in Australia unless you are an up to date member of an association which requires continuous learning to keep skills up to date.

I hope it will be a bit cooler today, the last couple of days have been horrid, the temperature sign outside one of the high schools yesterday was registering 43 degrees (109.4 F) when I drove past at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Had to go searching for the ad since the website is currently under a heavy load. Not sure why people get so worked up over a commercial in any case but a lot of folks spend their days searching for reasons to be offended.
Sounds like the lamb industry has a pretty healthy advertising budget and has found a good way to manufacture outrage for extra marketing and the vegans were happy to help out by being easily offended.

Have not posted for a bit.

Friday morning I was trapped in my bedroom by a snake fighting with the cat. The cat won.

My calcified rotator cuff has been playing up a bit over the weekend, so training today was light (65 kg Bench press) followed up by some specific rotator cuff exercises to make sure it is not impinged again. Tonight I am sitting here with my TENS machine attached to my shoulder as I am typing, which feels a bit odd as my muscles spasm and cause a ton of typo's lol, this is the second application today, pain was almost gone completely so after this session I should have minimal pain to sleep with tonight and be ok in the morning.

Squat day today, ok session, finished with 3km on the erg. 1000 cal burn for the session.

Very hot and very humid today.

Coaching tonight, there are 3 possible international championships for my son to qualify for this year but my finances are not that good, I simply cannot afford to pay for air tickets, accommodation and Aus uniform fees for 2 people to be able to go to South Africa for the Sub Junior world Bench press titles, the US for World Powerlifting Titles or NZ for Asia/Oceania Powerlifting titles. have to be a pragmatic in that even if he hit his world qualifiers next month we won't be going, saving money to get him to NZ where he can at least have family to watch him and have a chance of winning rather than being just another qualifier.

all this is on top of the costs of travel to Melbourne for National Titles.

Awesome that your son is close to qualifying which is a huge achievement in itself. Couldn't imagine the cost of travel alone to get to those competitions.

In a good mood today, I have a new client I am meeting tomorrow for the first time, I have been spending time this morning going over rowing technique to make sure I can help this client to the maximum with lifting.
It doesn't matter how experienced you are there are always new things to learn, especially in the field of fitness and sport and being able to adapt knowledge of one sport to benefit another. I am the first to admit I don't know everything but I do my best to fill in those knowledge gaps at every opportunity.

OMG Tru. Cat v/s snake in your bedroom? I'm glad the cat won. You must be so incredibly proud of your son. As parents we would like to do whatever we can for our family, but money is not unlimited & you do a great job. I can just imagine the sacrifices you make. All the best with the new client.

Finally home and rested after driving across 3 states in 16 hours with only fuel stops and no second driver this time.

just spent the last 40 minutes removing spam lol that is what I get for being off the forum for a couple of days.

Diet went a bit wonky on the drive but all back to normal now.

Eating has been a bit off over the weekend but nothing tooo bad. Training and coaching has been ticking along ok, contemplating whether I will coach football again this year, didn't last season.

Had my missing leghorn hen show up after being missing for weeks, she had a single baby chick tagging along behind, she is now back in the big chicken pen with her wing clipped. so she can no longer fly over the 6'6" fence. This is the first time I have ever need to clip a wing on a bird.

Squat day yesterday was tough coaching, my shoulder is giving me grief again but it will settle down again in a week or so. Football tonight, will talk to club president an see if they still need coaches for the youngsters this season, I do prefer to coach the little ones (under 6/7) they listen better than to older kids lol

That's a bugger about your shoulder Tru. Hope it does get better soon. Coaching littlies would be much more fun I would think.

yep, the bigger ones have parents that take kids sport just way to seriously, I don't need that sort of stress. Why is it that every parent thinks their little angel will be a star ? when the kids just want to have fun, and it is just not fun for the kids when the parents put sooo much pressure on them, and it makes it worse when the parents abuse officials, some of the verbal abuse I have encountered that was directed at 12/13 year old referees just learning the job has been atrocious. A kid who is having fun is more likely to learn and excel than a kid under a lot of stress.

Recently (a couple of months ago) my youngest was invited to be a part of a university study into the stress of being an elite youth athlete in Australia and was pleased to read some of his answers lol, he ticked the box saying that his parents (me) had high expectations but also picked the boxes saying that it wasn't unreasonable expectations and there was no stress or pressure and within what he believes he can do. It can be a fine line when your kid is actually an elite athlete as to what is reasonable expectation and what is pressure beyond their ability.

how does this relate to weight loss and fitness, well kids that have fun without the pressure will often develop a lifetime love of sport an physical activity, helping to prevent obesity problems. But kids who get pushed too hard give up because sport isn't fun, then as adults have a hard time getting active because they hate sport.

Well it looks like I will be coaching, the club is short in a few age groups, under 5, under 6, under 7 and under 9. I have told the club that I will be willing to coach whatever age group the can't find a coach for, still hope that a few more parents will step up to the mark. Which ever team I take on, the hope is that there is a parent willing to assist so they can take on the role of coach next season. Like any community organisation all the jobs that need to be done get done by the same people year after year, it is important to train new members to fill various club roles so the long standing members don't suffer burn out.

Coaching the little ones is not difficult but can be a bit intimidating for a parent who has never coached before and may not have ever played the game.
