Introduction to human behavior sounds fascinating!

I have chosen it as an elective becase exercise and diet compliance is a big factor for acheving results. Having a basic psych understanding of behaviour may improve outcomes for clients

My hip is giving me grief again, getting another scan on Monday before uni so I can get the Bursa injected, It has been over 12 months since it was last done. Unfortunately the arthritis irritates the bursa causing bad pain. I have also got bad pain in my knee over the last couple of days but it should clear up once my hip is functional again as it is referred pain. All this is going to make a practical exam next week a whole lot of unfun.

On the up side, for the last 2 nights, bub slept through and did not join us in our bed YAY, improved sleep.

Today is study and doing a bit of crafting for a bit of relaxation.

I hope you can get the injection soon & it provides fast relief. I'm glad bub is sleeping through. That is a major breakthrough :)

How did your injury happen, Tru, and how long have you had it? I think I have something similar in my knee right now.

Age and a lifetime if contact sports has a lot to answer for lol

I have arthritis in my hips and neck. The arthritic deposits in my hip irritate the bursa making it inflamed and that is where the hip pain comes from, not the arthritis directly. When there is a joint which is not functioning correctly, that dysfunction will cause pain in other nearby areas despite there being no injury in that location. Hip problems will refer pain to the lower back or the knee, in my case the left knee caused by the dysfunction in my left hip.

I also have calcification in both shoulders, however in the left shoulder the calcification irritated the bursa and the joint capsule, causing bursitis and adhesive capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder). The bursa I get injected under ultrasound guidance, the joint capsule had to be injected in a CT scanner. Expected recovery time for frozen shoulder is 2+ years and may never regain full shoulder mobility despite my best efforts with physio and a lot of shoulder rehab. Shoulder problem can also refer pain to the elbows however my elbows are currently ok :)

My right knee may or may not have calcification building up in it again. I had the calcification surgically removed over 20 years ago after I tore all of the ligaments in it (Training for Olympic selection trials for Judo) but is currently not painful however it is beginning to lock up occasionally again.

Over time I have had all the usual sports injuries, sprains, torn muscles, dislocated joints, concussions, broken fingers etc.

I am sure I have some memory issues from being knocked out playing sport (Pile driver head first into the boards of the ice rink) and my 20 year old son has memory issues after being knocked out playing baseball.

Thanks, Tru. That's curious about the bursa. How do you know that? I have been reading some about IT band syndrome as that's what I think I have and it's thought to be the same thing - impingement of the bursa. Actually several sources mention "friction" and don't go into much more detail but the bursa theory seems to be the most credible. It sounds like the IT band might be at play with your hip too? And how do you know about your arthritis? I think I have had arhritis (or something) in my knee when I was obese but it's gotten better as I've lost weight. It pops a lot and used to pop all the time with the weight. I don't have a sports medicine doc that I know of I could see and that whole process of finding someone and then if imaging is warrented, etc. would be really invovled and not worth it right now. I'd probably have to fight my insurance company tooth and nail for coverage. Certainly will not pay for imaging out of pocket. It would be thousands if not more.

And how do you know about your arthritis?

The Arthritis and inflamed Bursa show up in scans, The neck Arthritis showed up in a CT after a car accident, they were not looking for arthritis but as it was there they told me. Hip Arthritis was diagnosed with Xray.

The inflamed bursa shows up in an ultrasound as does the adhesive capsulitis.

If the area near to the bursa on the front/side of the hip is pressed (I am having trouble describing the exact spot lol) you will feel strong pain, and pressing on this point is what prompted my GP to send me for scan to confirm the bursitis.

I have the benefit of being in Australia with the the health system that goes with it. All tests were ordered by my GP and covered by our medicare system. I have no idea how people in the US get by when they have complex problems if they are not well off, even with insurance.

:) Explains why (non-athletic) Germans will tell you that Sport ist Mord.

While moderate exercise is good, sport at an elite level is certainly not good for you, people would be horrified to see the condition some sports stars are in after they leave the spotlight and begin to age.

Yes - with some sports I think the cheering crowds (and the profiting club-owners) should recognise that they hold part of a responsibility for the damage. And boxing, too. :( I hate the way old stars can be (not always, I know) just left on the wayside after the career is done.

Did you see last week's Insight on concussion, Tru?

I saw part of it. A lot of people don't understand the repercussions of repeat head knocks in sport. Often when working the sidelines for youth sport (senior sports medicine officer at he grounds), parents would be upset If I took their son off for suspected concussion and would not let them return to play and complain when I gave them a concussion form to take to their doc for clearance to return to play.

As a parent I know what it feels like to sit by your son in emergency waiting for a head scan with him asking where am I ? What happened ? every 3 minutes. To this day my son remembers nothing of what happened that day.

I'm glad those children have you to keep an eye out for them. I have heard lots of stories about concussion in sport of course as it has been a hot topic in Australia for a couple of years, but I think it will have to be successful litigation that will make clubs really take notice unfortunately.

Thanks for your replies, Tru. It's really interesting they can diagnose with various imaging. My PCP/GP doesn't have the capacity or expertise to handle this. He would refer me to a specialist. The health care system here is so complex the people who need it most become victims of it, monetarily and by not receiving the care they need.

My sister's boyfriend hit his head on a water slide more than a year back, refused to stay in the hospital afterward (because he's a Tough Guy (TM) and tough guys don't need a doctor for a bump on the head...) and went back to work the next day instead. His memory still hasn't fully recovered.

It is terrible that people suffer unnecessarily in a first world country like the US

I am struggling this afternoon, I needed to sort bubs clothes out to give away stuff she has grown out of, a lot of it being really nice stuff that mum purchased for her before she died, I know she wanted me to pass the stuff on when bub grew out of it but it is hard. I am keeping a couple of bubs favourites. What was harder was finding the birthday card mum sent to bub last year, it is the only thing I have that is in mums hand writing addressed to bub.

That´s tough, I´m sorry. Have a hug if you like: :grouphug:
