Legs ache right away

Every time I go try to run outside, After about a block or two, my legs just ache beyond belief. I end up walking. Now, on the elliptical, I don't have this problem. Am I just that badly out of shape, am I not stretching enough, whats the deal? I'd love to be able to go run outside on a nice day today, but i can't!

Any idea's?

The elliptical doesn't put the same stress on your legs from the impact. I don't know how heavy you are, but you might be better off with low impact cardio exercises, like the elliptical or brisk walking, until you lose more weight. Or, just take the time necessary to build up to it.

You don't run to get fit, you get fit to run! Really! You might also have issues with your feet/shoes/support - which also makes the elliptical safer for you right now.

The treadmill was tough on my knees (6foot and 235lbs at the time) so I tend to use the elliptical/recumbent bike in an alternating fashion as much as availability allows.

I'd like to be able to run but will wait until I'm under 200lbs to do so.

I'm 5'10" 185 lbs.

I'm thinking about going to see the doc to see if I can get some custom inserts for my hockey skates and shoes. I've noticed since I put on weight, my hockey skates hurt my feet like hell.

maybe you should try to ease in to your run.. walk for a couple of minutes, then into a slow jog to get your body warmed up, then run?

Consider the idea of going to a good running shop, getting them to analyze your running technique, fit you for proper shoes and socks, and suggest correcting any bad habits.

Your feet are locked in with an elliptical, it's not the same. Proper shoes and socks are huge for running. I was chewing my feet up bad on the treadmill with bad fitting shoes and poorly suited socks. You could be heel striking or doing something else that is causing you to develop pain fast with your running style.

Thanks for the info. I will see what I can find out!

Where does it hurt? are we talking quad aches which is generally... what you get from running I guess.. shin splints or like yeah.. where on the leg does it hurt, that makes a pretty large difference.

Could be anything from your body being unused to running to bad shoes, old unspotted injury and what not :) details details!

Sounds like an impact thing, new trainers (as trainers when they get old lose their soft bouncyness) as well as getting your gait checked can make a world of difference as well as being aware that you are working out a whole new set of muscles.

When you run or workout in a gym, you run or workout on the spot, you don;t 'go' anywhere so your body does not need to push yourself off the spot, it needs to work on keeping you upright and making circular movements with your legs.
When you step outside your constantly needing to propell your entire body forwards, and a great deal more then on a treadmill (where its more height then forward movements, even at high speeds). Be aware of this and give yourself a break, its a new skill your trying to obtain and will take time and more effort then your usual workout.
