lat pull downs

pulleys or levers.

I think Crazylegs has "hit the nail on the head" as we say in England. Thanks man, I dont know whay I didnt think of that before.

It sucks, When I was 17 I could do 50 pullups in one go hanging from a wide branch, Now I can only do 15 with close grip and 6-8 with a wide grip.

Jenn - Sorry I miss read "its a standard machine " for its a standing machine.
I was reading too fast.

so i still don't get what i am doing wrong!! i gather what you are telling me is to forget the lat pull downs and do pull ups instead. i'll try this and see how i make out, if anyone else has anything to add i'm all ears. thanks guys.

Jenn, For the first time when you stand and bring the bar down you could ensure as you sit, that your lower abdomen is touching the locking pads. Only then you should start your repititions. This will prevent your thighs from slipping as you pull down the bar for the subsequent reps. Perhaps you are already doing this.

i think that maybe i will try to bring the pads closer to my hips but my thighs aren't slipping its like my whole body is being lifted right up. like i said the ppl who have watched me seem to think that i'm just to light and that is why i'm having the lift off prob. but i will attempt to anchor higher and see if it helps without injuring my legs on the weights.lol . thanks

ok so i feel like i am beating a dead horse as it were. i tried afew things at the gym yesterday, a friend suggested(she has little knowledge) that i maybe going to fast hence lift off. any thoughts, i'm ok at 30 lbs but when i hit 35lbs i start lifting off. i am confused as to why this happens.

Hi Jenn, when you are returning to the starting position are you relaxing your body? You've said that you are returning the weight slowly so I gather your upper body is still somewhat tensed, but are you relaxing your legs?

I find that when I'm pulling down my lower body also tenses and my legs push up against the retention guard over my thighs - this motion of my legs pushing upwards has the effect of my Cheeky cheeks pushing downwards into the seat. If you are relaxing this action on the return, this could explain why you are prepping for lift off.

Also depending on your height, it might be that you are trying to let the handle return too far - as you have to stand to start this excercise, you cannot let the handle return all the way to the starting position without some form of standing occurring (unless your arms are incredible strechy). Try not to let your arms go completed straight when returning the handle, try and leave at least some bend at the elbow.

Hope this is of some help! Incidentally how much do you weigh?

Mark

i'm at 118 lbs right now. usually i am in between 120 and 130lbs. stress has made me lose but its coming back on (thank god) i'll keep an eye on that. i know that i keep my legs tensed at all times bc i'm worried about lifting off. lol that sounds funny.

i bought a chinning bar which fits nicely in an average doorframe. very convenient (and inexpensive) but maybe not what everyone wants in their doorway!
I tend to find that swinging (I tend not to think of myself as a swinger) becomes an issue for me - although I suppose this is where the stabalisation muscles come into play making the excercise more beneficial thatn a lat pulldown....

well i'm working on getting a pull up bar- hoping for a xmas gift. if not then i have to wait til january. but no change at the gym as far as lift off, anything above 30lbs and the hinny takes off

Push down on the floor with your heels instead of your toes and contract the abs this will keep that ass on the seat for sure. Worked for me.
