last 7 pounds....

I am 44 yrs old, and have struggled most of my life with up and down weight. My weight was normal as a kid. Now I only fluctuate 5-7 pounds within a years time. It use to be 15-25 pounds. I weigh around 125 give or take 2 pounds. After a summer of running I was sidelined for a month or so. Once school started again, I was eating less, even though I had less exercise I stayed around the same. I joined the "Y" and have been exercising 5 times a week. About an hour of cardio and 15-30 minutes of weight training. The weight training is not as consistent.
I love to cook and eat, but except for holidays and weekends within reason, I have cut out most processed foods. I have been trying to eat high protein, low carb, but good carbs, high fiber, tons of veggies, olive oil, portion controlled. I do enjoy a glass of red wine a couple of times a week. It does not help that I am vertically challenged at barely 5'3". I want to enjoy a little bit of everything.

I was fairly consistent for 2 months and barely lost 2 pounds. I understand the idea of a setpoint, but my hips, abdomen and behind are still not right for the amount of effort that I put in. I am open to suggestions.
Thank you :)

The Last Few Pounds Are The Hardest

ItalianRose,

Losing the last 5-10 pounds of fat is very difficult. The body doesn't like to give up it's greatest energy supply. It's a survival thing. To maximize your fat loss and health, I offer these truths:

1. Eat a balanced meal (1 part lean protein, 1 part fruit or vegetable, 1 part starchy carbohydrate) every 3-4 hours. Make each portion about the size of your balled up fist.

2. Strength train on a consistant basis. Muscle is where fat is burned. The more muscle you have (you won't develop so much muscle you will look "manly"), the better your body will look and the more fat your body will use all day long. Make sure you have a well thought out exercise plan that is based on your specific situation and goals. The wrong program could literally stall your progress for months or years.

3. Bodyweight means absolutely nothing! A body fat test should be done because it will provide information as to how much fat and lean muscle a person has. It is better to weigh 125 pounds and be 20% body fat than it is to be 117 pounds and 26% bodyfat.

4. When doing both aerobic exercise and resistance training in the same workout, do the resistance training first.

truths

Hi Heath,
Thanks for the advice. You speak some truths. People say that I do not look like I weigh as much as I do because it is muscle. I am going to shoot for being a little more consistent with the weight training. I am going to try and mix it up a bit too. The wine is going after this weekend and no food after 7 or 8 at night. It just depends on when I get home.
Thanks, Margie
