lapband???

my mother is looking into getting lapband surgery. thinking this will help me to acheive weight loss. i am worried about this whole thing , any one here have it done or know someone who has had it done?? she has tried all kinds of weight loss programs and has always put the weight right back on in no time. i think this is a big mistake and told her to get lipo instead and clean up her diet and start exercising, i'll help her out with both, she thinks she is just doomed to be overweight but being her daugther i ook at it from a different view point, she has a few med prob's that are undercontrol. i think diet and exercise is the best way to go but she is stuck on this quick fix. so any help would be greatly appreciated on this one. thanks in advance.

I also don't know of it but any surgery is a bad idea, especially if she has med problems. Try your best to monitor what she eats / what exercise she does. If for some strange reason, she loses no weight at all without eating the calories to produce, surgery could be an option but checkign with a doctor is a must before anything surgery related.

Personally, I see obesety as a psychological problem, not a physical one, except in rare cases of hypothyroidism and the like. A physical alteration such as this will help her lose weight mechanically, but will it make her feel better? I would think not. Not only will she be depriving herself of many foods she now enjoys, she will be depriving herself of the nutrients and pleasure of eating those foods. I hear it is very difficult to eat meat, or anything coarse after this surgery unless you chew it about a million times.

Personal opinions aside, the projected weight loss for this particular surgery is said to be 40-50% of ones excess weight over a period of 2 years. This is not a quick fix, this is a lazy fix. Hardly conducive to keeping the weight off.

She would be much wiser to get a good trainer (or listen to you Jenn). She would lose the weight faster than that, and would feel like a million bucks at the end of it.

As far as lipo is concerned, this is a quick fix, but how about all that extra skin hanging off? Yuck. Will she just keep getting it done when she puts the weight back on? Will she change her lifestyle to keep it off? In the end, after any surgery, the inevitable truth remains. One must eat well and exercise often in order to look and feel great, and be healthy. She doesen't have to take my word for it, she can ask her surgeon.

My uncle did this and lost 150 pounds............and then figured out how to eat and has put it all back on. Don't do it.

You idea about cleaning up her nutrition and exercising is much better and if she can make it a lifestyle, will work.

just as i thought ok i will do everything in my power to discourage it, and crazylegs she does have hypothyriodism and high bp, and agoraphobia , and i could go on. i keep telling her to eat the right way and get moving but i think she gets mad at me because i am so much smaller than the rest of the family and far healtier too, so this makes it a little harder. but i will continue trying. thanks to everyone for the response.

Ive heard about some ppl having it done n being happy with it, but as far as the future is concerned n getting all of the weight back, I dunno..good luck Jenn!

Jenn, is she taking meds for her thyroid? I assume if she is aware of it, then she is taking them, but perhaps the dose needs to be re-evaluated? Hypothyroidism can worsen or get better over time. The dosage may need to be adjusted. Or does she just eat a lot of junk?

i'm on top of her as far as meds and that kind of health stuff, she justs eats junk and crap food then diets loses some and starts the cycle all over again. its the crap she eats and no exercise. now when i eat there she eats good bc i won't eat the crap stuff so i try to eat there as much as i can .lol but hey if it works!! it is better than pretending there is not a problem. i'll just keep trying to support her and get her eating better and exercising with me.
