Ladies question about 'The Pill'

Hi, Sorry to be so crude, but i need to know if other ladies on this forum are having similar problems to me with regards to taking the pill. Ok,i used to take the 'Yasmin' pill, was great on that, very regular, knew exactly the days i was due and when it would end.My Doctor took me off it because of my age (37),last year. She then put me on 'Noriday',because of my weight being 19 stone, and my age 37,she also prescribed me to take 2 pills rather than the usual 1.Well since taking this pill my life has been a misery, constantly bleeding on and off, very unpredictable. She wont put me back on the Yasmin pill unless i lose weight as it is safer then.
Anyway, was just wondering if any of you girls have similar problems with the pill due to your weight?
Thanks.

Yasmin is prescribed to patients with heavy periods and is quite effective at what it does, this is why you probably have difficulty adjusting to your new pill. Yasmin also has a regular cycle (21 days on 7 off) that coinsides with your natural period cycles thus your would probably feel that things are as they should be. The pill you have been prescribed won't do this and you have been encouraged to take two as per the effectiveness and cycle periods. The drug you were taking is a hormonal drug and this combined with your age maybe the reason your doctor has decided to to take you off the medication.

I really don't want to give you medical advice because I am not qualified however I will give you my opinion and I belive that you should follow the advice of your doctor. Its not nice to think about but soon you are going to go through your menopause and this is a major hormonal change. You are overweight and this spells serious trouble for your health. You have to lose weight this is vital, you must do it else you probably will never get another chance. You have to take action NOW. It doesn't matter how much you do but you MUST do something.

This pill should be prescribed and treated with extreme caution in patients suffering from obesity. You can find a quick read here on this site:

Walk for 30 min a day and adjust your diet. I guess you are going to have to put up with the pain until you do.

Good luck

Wow,thank you for your reply, i must say your reply gave me a huge kick up the proverbial! It really shocked me to be honest, but its exactly what i needed, a dose of reality. Believe me,i have certainly tried to lose weight, done really well, then for some reason end up back at square one,i am sooooo tired of going through life with this hang up on food, all i can say is i have an addiction to food, the same as a person can have an addiction to alcohol or drugs, it is so hard to control.I have had various kinds of help, counselling etc, but it never really helped,i just keep going round in circles. I know exactly how to diet, what to eat,and how to exercise,i do very very well, but in the end the addiction takes over somehow.
Anyway, thanks again for your advice,i am continuing with my doctors advice, and you know what? I WILL go for a walk EVERY day for 30 minutes come rain or shine, and try my very best to raise my spirits and get out of this mess. Thanks so much.
Catherine.

The pill should not cause you any sort of "misery." Undoubtedly there will be an adjustment period for your body, but if the discomfort lasts longer than 2 or 3 months, hound your doctor until they change your prescription. Ultimately, you know your body better than anyone else; if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Your doctor makes an educated guess when choosing which pill to prescribe you, but there's no telling how your body is going to react. There -IS- an appropriate birth control out there for you...it's your doctor's job to find it.

Excessive bleeding can lead to anemia or worse...I've been there, and it's horrible. Once my doc found the right pill for me (zovia), everything fell into place and I even LOST 10 pounds.

Best of luck, and hope you feel better.

Thank you so much for this. Well it has been nearly 6 months i have been on this particular pill, and still things are so unpredictable, and i do feel extremely depressed because of all this. I am due to go back to my Doctor in a months time so will see if she can change it for me. I do understand it is hard to find a suitable pill because of my weight and age though.

With what you described I would urge your doctor to check you for PCOS. Irregular bleeding has a reason, and that reason should be found and treated rather than just trying to keep the bleeding in check with the pill.

I suffer from PCOS and had the same thing, I could keep things in check with one particular pill reasonably well, but then got a different one and it caused things to go a lot worse, I also felt horrible, nauseous and generally unwell, together with the excessive bleeding. I was eventually diagnosed with PCOS, and my doc suggested trying an IUD instead of the pill.

I got the Mirena coil and haven't had any problems with bleeding ever since then. That said, I know that a lot of people blame weight gain on having a coil, so that would be something to consider. Personally, I lost over 100 lbs since I had it, so I don't second that notion at all.

In any case, with 6 months on the new pill and things not getting any better, it is clearly that this particular pill is not for you. Talk to your doctor and maybe try to look into different borth control methods, even if you don't want an IUD. There's other stuff like implants etc.

Some info about PCOS, very basic, but it will give you the general idea. It doesn't mention heavy bleeding in the description, but it's certainly part of the symptoms.

One more thing - why wait another month to see your doctor? It clearly doesn't work and your not feeling well, so I would insist on seeing them very soon.

I definately agree with the last two posts, there should be no need for you to suffer and you should get help however you must take responsibility for this in terms of your eating addiction whether it may be blaming your doctor, pill or anything else for the way you feel. (deppressed)

I think you have a lot of courage admiting you have a problem and trying to face it.:hurray:

You have to take control of your life and become the authority, you have to recognise why you feel the way you do and change your behaviour. Whether it is self pity, depression, denial, blamming, negative self talk, resentments, fear and excuse making, these all all things that are affecting you and enabling you to stay in addiction.

When you say " I do well for a while and then it goes down hill" I call this "white knuckling". In reality it takes alot longer than you think to change your behaviour. I was an alcoholic for over 7 years - It took me just over 2 years to get back on my feet and then I was still vunerable.

In the end I had to realise that I was the one that had choices in my life I had to forget about the alcohol and concentrate on the reasons that I wanted to drink - the same way you have to forget about food and look at why you feel the way you do in life. How is your career, social, love life etc and try to improve them. You have to stop trying to control your bad feelings and suppressing your emotions with eating to feel good.

I'm glad your looking at this with a serious approach because it is what is needed, we only live once and we get no second chances. Addiction can kill and I have seen many people die because of it whether it is drugs, alcohol, under/over weight.

I am writing a blog at the moment which will look into addiction and weight loss, when I have posted enough I hope to share it with you all.

Good luck and remember TALK - its the best way of changing yourself and gaining a insight into who you are, hopefully the people here can help you recognise your emotions and put you back on track.

Thanks for all replies. I have done alot of thinking these last few days and i have decided to stop taking the pill altogether, going to use other methods for birth control, as i am tired of feeling depressed. Now with regards to my weight issues,i have decided to ask my Doctor about seeing another specialist to try understand why i am eating so out of control and how to control it. I have had no luck in the past with various specialists but i guess i have to keep searching until i get my answers. I cant go through life with this addiction killing me.

Congratulations on taking the first steps toward getting your diet and health in perspective and under control. I've had some weight gain and depression in the past, and there is plenty of obesity and depression in my own family. Personally, I have found slow and steady positive change in diet and activity has made all the difference.

Educate yourself on proper healthy diet and exercise, do see a doctor, of course, and believe in yourself that you can change. It can be slow going and rough at times, but you can and will do it.

Regarding the Pill and advice given here: I don't believe that age 37 (my age as well) is anywhere near "soon" for menopause. My own mother didn't go through the change until almost age 60!

I've only been on the Pill once in my life for maybe 2 months and it was dreadful. I can't remember which Pill it was, but it made me nauseated, gain weight, and become terribly emotional. Now, I know some women take the Pill to combat these very symptoms, so I can't be the judge for everyone.

Thank you so much,Kalima. Been a long time since i posted on this forum, but my news is i am going for the Gastric Band or Gastric Bypass surgery, had my first appointment yesterday and i need to decide which will suit me best. I do look at it as a very last resort method to losing weight,i am 37 yrs old and after having tried all kinds of ways to lose weight,it is time i did something that will work,i just cant live like this all my life,so it is a lesser of two evils really. Anyway, just got to see the surgeon is the next step, hopefully i am a suitable candidate to having it done.
I stopped taking the Pill,my mood is alot better,im alot happier and more positive of a better futre :).
Take care all xxx

Gastric band surgery will definitely give you the results you're after. I think you'll find support and information on the forums here dedicated to it, many folks here have had one in and can offer good advice regarding.

I'm not too keen on the idea of surgery in general--I'm actually having surgery on my arm next week--but I understand the need and uses for it. Being a candidate for the gastric band must mean you're in fairly good health to begin with--I hope it helps you reach your goals. Good luck to you!

Thanks Kalima. Yeah the Doctor asked lots of questions and has taken blood samples, done an ECG test, measured me,taken my families medical history, all sorts really. He says i do have very good health and that im a good candidate to have it done.Need to see the hospital Psychiatrist and the surgeon, but he sees no problem really with the answer being yes to go ahead. So excited but also very aprehensive as i know all the risks, just hoping things go well and trying to stay positive that it will go right.
Good luck with your surgery also :seeya:
