So I needed to buy two new tires for my minivan this week, completely depleting my grocery money and delaying paying for my driver's license renewal. Sigh...it always seems to be something. I work fulltime and my wage isn't bad ($22 an hour) but my paycheque seems to be gone the day I get it.
When I was with my ex-husband, he was often unemployed plus he spent money stupidly. We struggled often and there were many times we had to get food from a food bank. Much of it was processed food, not much in the way of fresh ingredients. So nutrition wasn't even a consideration. I figured out meals with what we got from the food bank and any grocery money we had went to staples like milk, margerine and eggs. When we split, I was left with a lot of debts and so I had to move in with my mother. I'm grateful to her for taking me and my 3 kids in but...
She eats very unhealthily. I pay her rent and I buy groceries when I can. However, while I can afford to but stuff for a meal here or there, I often have to eat what she has bought and she won't accept any of my suggestions for healthier food. On the counter right now sits a big container of store-made cherry turnovers and a container of mini-donuts and a couple bags of garlic bread. She is constantly buying chips and cheezies and candy. She buys sugary cereals for the kids (despite my asking her not to) and chocolate-chip eggo waffles and makes bacon like every second day. She hates 90% of vegetables and despises whole grains. And she is always drinking pop. My mom is overweight too, probably about the same weight as me. And my brother comes over and eats a lot of meals here too and probably weighs well over 300 pounds. I wish I could get them to embrace healthier eating but they only get mad at me bringing up the idea.
