Knee Problems..

It's exactly the same as a plié in ballet. Yes, the femur will be rotated. You can keep your back perfectly straight and the only thing moving is your legs. I have to concentrate on bending forward ever so slightly so the bar doesn't fall off my traps.

Takes a lot of quad strength, hip flexibility and ankle flexibility. If I don't have fluid movement, I'll stick coming up because my knees aren't what they used to be. I doubt anybody on this forum does squats the way I do them. And it's probably a good thing ;)

But having a wider stance and rotating my hips is the most comfortable way for me to do them. Also, women usually use a wider stance because our pelvic girdle is wider (relatively speaking) than a man's.

I wasn't talking about the sumo squat specifically, just about squats in general.
and in the plié, don't you go up on your toes? do you do that?

I think your stance would have to be extremely wide for your situation...if I understand your explanation correctly. I just tried do this barefoot, and what ended up happening was not rotation, but inversion at the ankle to keep the knees in line. I felt more pressure on the lateral portion of my foot.

Another thing to consider, if you observe yourself doing a squat at any stance width, at the bottom of the motion the femur is not perpendicular with the body. This is just the way the body works and have nothing further on this, but allows proper alignment so you won't have knee rotation. Knee rotation is bad. Keep joints in line.

Not when I'm squatting. My weight is mostly in my heels ;)

But yes, I can still go en pointe. I saved the last pair of pointe shoes I used when I danced for that very purpose :)

OK. Cursor down to the first set of pics. Try not to look at the guy's crotch (ewwww). Look at the pic on the right. Now instead of my feet and hips being rotated at a 90° angle, put them at a 45° angle.

That's how I do 90% of my squats. But I go down all the way, not half way. I don't feel anything on my foot. It feels perfect.

I can do normal squats. But I can't use as much weight.

For sheezy, I've seen people do squats that way. And you go all the way down? that's pretty impressive.

With feeling more inversion, I was doing a much wider than shoulder width stance with feet pointed forward. It could be just me, who know, it's just what I felt.

Not impressive really. It's just the way my body has been trained to move so it's what I'm more comfortable with :)

Ballet takes unnatural movements and makes them look natural. That's all.

Yes now that I think about it and try it out some more, it seems to be inversion.

So in order to keep the toes pointed straigth ahead without the knees buckling inwards compared to the ankles you'd have to invert your feet? That's basically what we've found out here today.. is this what scientists get payed for? :p

That right. Smith machines, leg extensions etc are un-natural and a sure way to get injured.

a leg press/hip sled station is how I jacked up my left knee years ago. Never had it properly diagnosed.

it got better over time, and squats don't bother it.

but I"ve taken up bowling (shutup, I'm 31 now...I'll do what I want!) and often the day after bowling night, my left knee aches. Its not a sharp pain though, and a knee brace helps it feel better. Usually a day later its pretty much fine.

But, it sucks to drive my manual car...

I've never bowled in my life. I'm probably the only person that has never done it. Everybody I know who bowls says it's a blast.

The only thing stopping me from bowling is that the shoes are so goofy looking ...

Oh - my - god! I like TOTALLY agree! *does the feminine hand gesture thingy* the shoes are HORRIBLE!! Why they don't make designer bowling shoes is BEYOND me! I mean who do they expect to actually wear those things?! Fat, chubby, ugly people with tomato sauce spilled all over their shirt? Uh-uh that's not me baby. No way!

screw that!! They rock the house. I wear them without socks, and would steal them for personal use if I wasn't law-abiding.

Kinda makes renting things sound not so good.
