It's exactly the same as a plié in ballet. Yes, the femur will be rotated. You can keep your back perfectly straight and the only thing moving is your legs. I have to concentrate on bending forward ever so slightly so the bar doesn't fall off my traps.
Takes a lot of quad strength, hip flexibility and ankle flexibility. If I don't have fluid movement, I'll stick coming up because my knees aren't what they used to be. I doubt anybody on this forum does squats the way I do them. And it's probably a good thing
But having a wider stance and rotating my hips is the most comfortable way for me to do them. Also, women usually use a wider stance because our pelvic girdle is wider (relatively speaking) than a man's.
