Here we go...

My current weight is 84 kg (185 lb), I'm 175 cm (5'10") and I need to lose some of it. If I can get down to 70 kg (154lb) then that would be fantastic. My last health kick managed to get me down to 78 kg (172lb) but a change in working hours and planning a wedding took away all my time and put me back where I started.

So now I'm going to jog in the morning before work, or afterwards if I don't get time. My lovely wife wants to join me, not that she needs to lose weight but it's great for the company.

My breakfast is fine, I have low fat yoghurt, an apple and orange juice. Lunch is a sandwich or leftovers from the night before with water. Dinners vary quite a bit, I really can't stand monotony which is what puts me off a lot of diets. Some typical dinners are;

- lean beef steak or lamb chops with mashed or boiled potatoes and brocollini
- crumbed lamb cutlets/roast rack of lamb with roast potatoes and brocollini
- Chicken curry with rice
- The odd pasta (rarely)
- Takeaway once a week/fortnight (indian or pizza)

Along with the odd different meal.

Beer is out. Never used to drink much, now I'm having 1-2 a night. Once that sixpack is finished, thats it, only for special occasions. At least it's low-carb.

Snacks are cut as well. My wife loves it, she can eat it and not put on an ounce, so I'll just have to be strict with myself. Coke is out. I'll be back to having water with my dinner as well.

Here's a shot of me. I'm not that big, but enough to be uncomfortable with myself.

Anyway any tips/advice/comments are appreciated. Cheers!

LOLz! At least you know you are doing the right thing!!!

I don't think you are eating enough breakfast.. you are only eating about 160 cals with the yoghurt and apple, and none of it is complex carbs which are the nice "fillers" plus really good for you.. I would ditch the orange juice (empty cals take a vit c instead) and add a small bowl of oatmeal/porridge made with water (no sugar) and served with a tablespoon of sultanas for sweetness. Total cals of that is only 120 and it will make you feel great all morning, not to mention your bowels will love ya!

Dinners you mentioned will vary a lot in Cals, try to reduce or remove any white processed stuff like pasta or white rice.... replace with wholegrain pasta or brown rice, and NOT a lot of it... eating your biggest meal at night is probably what most of us do.. but is not great for weight loss, remember portion control, if you don't know what that means, then buy a few Lean Cuisines to get an idea of what a portion is.

Sheez your wife is lucky if she can snack on junk and not put on weight!!!

Good on you for stopping the Grog, that is one of the hardest for me, especially on the weekends :angelsad2:

This is all stuff I have known for a while, but jsut haven't implimented until now LOL one week in I have lost 3kg and feel great, just by switching to high fibre/low fat/low carb and watching calories and portions!

Best of luck to you and hang in there :coolgleamA: :waving: :hurray:

Well I've made a start. I cut down my portion size last night with dinner, only 2 chops instead of three (with the fat chopped off) and not as much potatoes. Had a few rice crackers after dinner (plain), must confess they did have a bit of cheese which was left over from a party on the weekend :svengo:. Won't be buying any more of that either.

My wife and I went for a walk (about half hour) before dinner with some nice steep inclines. Nice to know that I'm now a faster runner than my wife! She must be more unfit than she looks. She always, always used to beat me. So now she is motivated as well. A bit of competition is always good.

I managed to wake up this morning at 5.45am but didn't quite make it out of bed :banghead: So I didn't go for a jog this morning. I'll go for one this afternoon and try again tomorrow morning.

Had 2 beers last night :leaving: . Oh well, only 6 left in the fridge, I'll save them for the weekend as we have family coming around for a bbq. I'll be saving some money as well once they are gone.

Thanks for the tips Kori. We tried using brown rice a little while ago. I don't mind it but the wife hated it. She is pretty proud of her rice (it's damn good), so it'll be hard to switch. Pasta we rarely eat now, maybe once a month.

Not as good a start as I had hoped for, but a start nonetheless!

Small changes to your diet and exercise over time will make a big difference.

Welcome to the forum :)

LOL nice to get a bit of "inter relationship" rivalry going on the exercise! :p My hubby drank a bottle of red over dinner last night, and I didn't touch it!!! Was so proud of myself! ....and he had a serve of wholegrain pasta with a low fat chicken and veggie sauce that was 6 or more times as big as mine... I didn't say anything but I will when he complains he is getting fat again hehehehe *evil*

I know about the brown rice, I adore it, but hubby and the kiddo only tolerate it.. makes it hard!

Hey don't beat yourself up.. you are on the right track, remember a healthy eating plan (just like a puppy) is for life!

Progress!

I've somehow managed to lose 2 kg (4.4 lb) over the last 3 days! I had to double check again this morning to make sure it was true. Hooray! :coolgleamA: 2kg (4.4lb) gone, 12kg (26lb) to go.

I didn't manage to get a run in last night, I wasn't sure what time my wife would be home at (she had coffee with her sister) and I didn't want to go without her. So instead I did some other exercises,;

- Sit ups (3 sets of 20),
- Push ups (3 sets of 10),
- Bicep curls with I think 3.5kg weights (will check when I get home, 3 sets of 15 per arm)
- Those ones where you hold the weight and lift your arm away from your body (3 sets of 10 per arm), what are they called again?
- I'm sure there were other, just can't remember off of the top of my head!

This morning i'm a little tight and sore, not too bad though. Mainly across my chest, a bit in my stomach and in my arms so I know I've worked them. Enough to know that I've had an effect, but not overdone it. Probably could have done another set of sit ups but didn't want to overdo it.

I did want to go for a run this morning, but stupid me set the alarm for 6.45, not 5.45 so I didn't have any time :cuss:. Not sure how much time I'll have this evening as family is round for dinner.

I managed to be a bit better on the snacks last night. I managed to hold out until my wife cracked open the strawberry creams, but I limited myself to 2 which isn't too bad (normally I'd have half the packet!). I need to keep reminding myself that this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. If I take away everything all at once I'm bound to fail.

Oh, and a quick question. After I had finished my little workout I was quite peckish. I drank a bottle of water but still needed something. Then I remembered we had some left over steaks in the fridge. So I cut off a piece (literaly smaller than one bite) and had that, no fat on it. I figure that it's protien after a workout, it was only one tiny bit and it stopped me having half a pack of crackers. Kept my hunger back until dinner anyway. Is my reasoning ok?

No beer last night! I had a glass of water with dinner instead of the usual beer/coke/wine. Dinner was Penang curry with white rice. I know, white rice, but it's soooo good. It's about the only meal we eat rice with anyway and we might have it once a fortnight. We've tried it with brown rice, I don't mind it but the wife hates it. Oh, and home made, not takeaway if that makes a difference. Portion size wasn't that much smaller (wife had already served it up), maybe a little bit. Leftovers for lunch as well.

Until next time :seeya:

2kgs is AWESOME!!! well done you!!! :D

Sounds like you are really on track now! Way to Go!

you should eat something with carbs and protein within 20 minutes of a workout to replenish glycogen stores and aid recovery.

Thanks guys. So I had a small bit of steak after my workout (protien), dinner was soon after that (protien and carbs). Tonight I know is going to be a naughty night, ricotta canneloni, my father-in-laws favourite. I'll just have to have a smaller serve.

I've set myself a mini-goal. I have a friends wedding to go to next saturday (the 16th). I want to get below 80kg or at least hit it. So I have 10 days to lose 2 kg. I figure if I can lose the initial 2kg in 3 days I should be able to make it.

I'm drinking more water now, already on my second bottle, that should be about 5 for the day (5*600ml = 3L or 0.8 gal) plus what I'll have at home, hopefully another litre.

I have to say this site is fantastic, keeping this diary along with all the comments is a great way to keep myself motivated.

If I had any idea what those weight amounts were in pounds I'd sit here saying "YOU CAN DO IT!" actually, I'll still say that. So..

You Can Do It!!

Off work sick today :puke:

I've got a massive headache and a fuzzy head. I'm better now than what I was this morning though. It doesn't help that I'm a bit sore either! At least that means the exercise is working.

I did manage to get a jog in yesterday, about 3km (around 2 miles). Well, not so much a jog as a swift walk with bits of jogging in between. It took about half an hour.

I'm not sure what I'll do this afternoon, if anything. It depends on how I feel a bit later. I might just go for a walk, I'd feel bad about not doing anything.

I've managed to avoid all junk snacks so far today, I might get an apple in a minute though. No beer/wine/coke again last night, just water. I even avoided the temptation of walking across the street to Subway for lunch today, I settled with a toasted chicken sandwhich with a bit of margarine and a little bit of mayo, about half as much as I normally have.

I'm not game to weigh myself, I'm trying to not do it every day otherwise I'll be disheartened by little bits of progress.

Otherwise, I'm getting used to avoiding junk food again, as well as beer.

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement!

Sorry to hear you are crook today :( Hope you feel better soon. Soup is always great when you are feeling sick!

Well done resisting temptation though! :D

You are doing great, so stick to you!!! :hurray:
