Keeping Track of HIIT time

Hi, I started doing HIIT and I count in my head, and I was wondering if there was any kind of watch of something that keeps track of time for HIIT. I think I may be counting too slow or too fast when do HIIT(10 second rest, 20 second sprints alternating). I was also wondering, I have read about HITT and was wondering what "resting" meant, walking, jogging, or stopping completely. I interpreted it as walking.

How about just any watch or device used to keep time? The time doesn't need to be completely exact, just roughly appropriate. And what you define as your rest period depends on how fit you are concerning running. HIIT is all relative, it's meant to be something that you do as hard as you can. If you need the walking break instead of a jogging break in between, walk. If you're not feeling like you're going to die after you do HIIT, make it more difficult.

If you are doing HIIT right, you cant count. Just run till you give out, there is no way that will be more than 30 secs. Its full, all out about to fall on face running, your body will tell you when to stop. And just get a stop watch for the time to rest between intervals.

I was wondering the same thing. The HIIT FAQ here states to do sprinting for a certain amount of time, I was wondering how the heck can you make sure you do it for the correct amount of time.

I had my first HIIT workout a couple of days ago (did it running in place, since I've read that as long as you get your heart pumping it doesn't really matter what exercise you are doing), and I was trying to estimate 30 seconds when sprinting, but my estimates were probably way off, since I was mainly focusing on going as fast as I could, If I started thinking about the time I would involuntarily slow down.

In any case, two hours after my HIIT workout my heart was still beating faster than usual, looks like this HIIT thing really does accelerate your metabolism while resting. I'm planning another HIIT session either tonight or tomorrow.

Are you suggesting (and I'm not being funny over it, sorry if it sounds like I am!) that its not possible to run flat out for more than 30s? Or do you mean flat out over 30s for a few times in a row? ie the first couple of times no problem but after that it becomes impossible?

I can only approximate the length of each segment, since there is a lag when the TM change the speed, also, when I am huffing-puffing during sprint (regardless 1min or 30sec .. who knows...) it is a challenge in itself not to fall flat on your face trying to change the speed back to jog pace.

i just approximate when doing these runs. i sprint past 5-7 houses or so, then walk / jog the same number, then sprint etc etc rinse and repeat =) people always comment on how ridiculous i look while doing these haha
