bacteria,
sure, walking at a slow pace is better than NOT AT ALL.
But to get any TRUE benefit, you shoud walk at a pace quick enough to get your heart rate up within your 'target heartrate zone.'
220 minus your age, is your maximum.
I I remember from school correctly, we learned that in order to benefit you must be working within 60%-90% of your maximum heart rate. Should never go higher than 90% (That would be intense exercise.)
Me for example: 220-18= 202. Now, to get the most benefit my heartrate (beats per minute) should be between 60% of that number and 90% So... 60% would be 121 beats per minute, 90% would be 182 beats per minute. Meaning, to benefit I MUST keep my heartrate between 121 and 182. The higher the heart rate, the better. Just dont go over 90%.. that could be too stenuous.
Someone correct me if Im wrong.. Im trying to pull information out of my brain that I learned in P.A.L class in grade 11! (Physically Active Lifestyles).. and yes, there was a whole course on it! I loved that class cause you learned a lot about fitness and health. We also had to learn proper weight training, etc one a week in the weight room at the school. Every second class we spent a day in the gym, exercising (embarassing) and each class started with a 12-minute run! Now, 12 minutes doesnt sound like a long time.. but when you're as fat as I am, and out of shape... it is horrible!! Not to mention, extremely humiliating.
haha, anyways.. hope that helped?
