So Wikipedia defines flexatarianism as "a semi-vegetarian diet focusing on vegetarian food with occasional meat consumption."

I figure I can do this until I can become a full fledged veg. I've never liked the taste of meat, with the exception of some New York Strip which I LOVE. heh. (WORCESTERSHIRE!) but I'm anemic, and when my iron gets low I turn pale white, my lips turn purple and I pass out. =S! But I figure if I do the flexatarianism thing for a while while taking iron and fish oil supplements I'll be able to be a vegetarian again without almost dying.

Is fish oil considered meat?

I'm on day 3 of my lifestyle change. Its really hard. I messed up bad yesterday but I'm back on the pony. I ate an entire half of an 18 inch double cheese pizza. =S
But thats still less than what I would have been eating. I weighed my self this morning and I weigh 283 pounds, so even though I ate all that I still lost a pound in 2-3 days, so I'm happy :)
I stopped drinking pop, it may not sound like much but it is probably the hardest thing I've done in my whole life. I used to drink at least 5 Dr. Peppers a day, at 150 calories apeice. I'm trying to stick to my 2,300 calories a day for a few months then I'm gonna decrease it down to 2,100.

I love this forum, it is really helpful. I've been doing good so far but I'm staying on it this time.

Meal replacement drinks?

Would the Special K protien shakes or Slimfast be better for me to drink? Just like one time a day or whatever.

Better in what sense? :) Or I guess, what are you using them for? To get more protein? To be a snack or a meal substitute?

For me the choice of whether or not to consume something has a whole lot to do with the ingredients. I looked up the ingredients of the shakes online and here's what I came up with:

Slimfast Protein Shake:
Fat free milk, water, calcium caseinate, milk protein concentrate, maltodestrin, cocoa, canola oil, gum arabic, cellulose gel, sugar, mono and diglycerides, fructose, potassium phosphate, soybean lecithin, cellulose gum, carrageenan, artificial flavor, isoloated soy protein, sucralose and acesfulfame potassium, dextrose, potassium carrageenan, citric acid, and sodium citrate.
1 serving = 190 calories, 24g carb, 15g protein, 5g fat.

Special K Protein Shake:
Water, protein blend (whey protein concentrate, soy protein isolate), sugar, polydextrose, maltodextrin, canola oil, natural and artifical flavers, magnesium phosphate, potassium citrate, tricalcium phosphate, gellan gum, cellulose gum, soy lecithin, mono and diglycerides, ascorbic acid, salt potassium (and a few other things)
1 serving = 180 calories, 29g carb, 10g protein, 5g fat.

Neither of those look particularly healthy to me. Both have an insane amount of sugar for a "healthy" drink. And for a "protein drink" ... I'm pretty appalled at the amount of protein.

By comparison, you could buy whey protein isolate (powder) and mix it with water or any other liquid and get anywhere from 20-30g protein for around 130 calories, 4g carb, 2g fat. It's also cheaper to buy the powder and mix it yourself. :)

But again, it all depends on what you're using it for.

I meant for protien, but I like your idea way better =P

Whats the best kind of protein to buy, and where can I find it?

Hm. Honestly I buy what's cheap and has the best list of ingredients (according to my needs). Right now I'm using Body Fortress Whey Isolate. I think I got it at Costco, but I know WalMart carries it, too. I have the vanilla flavor and sometimes I'll mix it with orange juice - it ups the calories, of course, but makes a good snack - and it tastes kinda like an Orange Julius (if you remember those from the mall shops) if the OJ is cold enough.

Steve recommended some that I'm going to order when I run out of this ... um ... HAH! Found it. He recommended the Syntrax brand. I will have to get it online but he says the lemon flavor is pretty decent.

LOL. No problem. I'm happy to answer questions. Hope you don't mind my book-length responses. :)

I personally don't like to use any kind of drink for a meal replacement. That's just me - some people do fine with them. My opinion is that if you get in the habit of drinking your meals, then you aren't developing sustainable, lifetime habits to maintain your weight.

Now, that doesn't mean that sometimes I haven't had a protein drink in place of a meal - I think as a once in a while thing it's ok. I travel a lot for work and sometimes I'll take protein powder with me to the airport. In a situation like that, I'd rather shake up a scoop or two of powder in a container of orange juice than be stuck eating a hamburger from the crappy airport food court. For me, it's the lesser of two evils. :)

What I use protein powder for is to supplement my protein intake and as a snack. I will usually mix some up with water when I get home from the gym - whirl some up in the blender with water and maybe a piece of fruit or even just shake it up in plain water.

Sometimes I'll add a scoop to my breakfast - but I add it, rather than having it instead of breakfast. I usually have yogurt and blueberries for breakfast and so I'll mix in a scoop with my yogurt.

The thing about whey protein (or any protein supplement for that matter) is to think of it as just another food item. You most likely wouldn't eat just a chicken breast for lunch right? Or have 6 slices of deli turkey with nothing else. Or eat tuna out of the can with a fork and not have a salad or some bread to go with it? So why drink just a protein shake for lunch?

OTOH, if you're talking about a snack, you might just grab a couple of slices of chicken for a snack in the afternoon, or eat one boiled egg. Sometimes my afternoon snack is a can of V8 juice. In that case, a quick drink can be a decent snack, so why not a drink of whey protein with water?

Just think of it like any other food - and I think you'll do fine with it.

I think I'll just use it as part of my breakfast or something. Or as my breakfast cause I'm not a big fan of breakfast food. :p

I made spaghetti.
its so heavy on my belly. :puke: :(

So I'm gonna eat catfish for the first time. Anyone know a good recipe that doesn't involve breading? And that doesn't make it as fishy tasting loll?

And also I stocked up on fresh cilantro, parsley, and mint. I've always gotten the dry ones before and I have no idea how to store them properly. Do you put them in the fridge or what?

My husband is a saboteur. He bought all kinds of frozen pizzas and ice cream and cookies. :(
Oh, and I bought some chocolate flavored whey protien at food city. Would that be good added to skim milk?

Woooot

another 3 pounds gone :):):)

I'm no longer looking at it that I have 130 pounds to lose. I'm looking at it as I have JUST a 130 pounds to lose, and I've been reading peoples diaries that lost way more than that and it serves as such an inspiration for me :)
I'm feeling a whole lot less defeated.

Yay for 3 lbs down! :)

I try to think of my loss in terms of 10 pound increments. I never think "God I have 40 more pounds to go." Instead I think "4 more pounds until I'm in the 160s. When I get there, my next goal will be to get to the 150s. And so on. 10 lbs at a time ... that's manageable. Anyone can lose 10 lbs, right? :)

I decided this time to look at weight loss the same way. I have so much weight to lose (WELL over 100) that I decided to look at it all in mini-goals and that makes it much more managable!

Keep up the great work!

uh ohhh.

my weight loss might be stalled for about 9 months :O

i have every one of the symptoms of early pregnancy.
and a month late (whichis kinda normal for me)
and i have tiny red dots on arms so i typed in on google "tiny red dots early pregnancy" and found out lots of women get them.

im gonna go get a test later today to find out. i'm 98% sure i am though.

question, since i lost some weight when i couldve been pregnant can that hurt the baby?

It's pretty normal to lose weight early in pregnancy - especially if you have bad morning sickness. It won't hurt the baby.

Obviously don't do any crash diets, drink any herbal diet aids, or take any pills - "natrual" or otherwise.

I have a good friend who is very overweight (150+ lbs) and she actually lost weight during her entire pregnancy because she started eating very healthily and eliminated all junk and sugar from her diet while pregnant. So while she "gained" weight from the baby, she lost fat. She wound up giving birth to a 9.75 lb baby boy who was (and is) exceptionally healthy. :) (He's 7 now, btw!)

I had two very healthy little boys even though I was substantially overweight. I lost weight with both pregnancies and ended up lighter at birth than I was at conception.

Let us know when you know for sure!

:)

And if you have any questions I'm around!

the first test was negative, i'm taking the other one in a few days though.

i have mixed feelings about it lol.
i wanted to name it vanessa.
but if i ever have one, her name will be vanessa ;p

oh no I should clarify - I didn't TRY to lose weight while I was pregnant! LOL I ate super healthy ... lots of grains, meats, veggies, fruits and diary.. my doctor figures a part of it is that I was was just more careful about what I ate... i didn't TRY.. it just happened.

oh AND... with both of my kids I tested late... i was over a week late before my tests turned up positive.
