Hey my name is Tania. I am getting married in June and want to lose about 3 stone. I know this is going to be hard and I am going to have to burn more calories than I eat but I was wondering if anyone had any other advice. As in what kind of meals is good for me and the whole protein and carbs side of it because that is where I struggle. Also does the weight loss shakes and pills actually work?

If someone could send me back a reply I would be more than grateful.

Many Thanks

Tania

14x3=42 pounds in about 3 1/2 months is pushing it sweetie =T

that is 14 weeks... till june 1st (lol if i am counting right... i am horrible with numbers =P)

you can lose 2 pounds per week pretty consistently... sooo 2 stone for sure if you put your mind to it =D or maybe even 2 1/2 ... mmm but also it depends on your starting weight.

you should definitely find out your BMR and then try counting calories... ive lost almost 20 pounds in about 6 weeks from calorie counting and cardio everyday 50+ minutes of powerwalking.

Hey Tania, welcome.

Personally, I don't want to lose ANY stones. I only have two of them and I plan on using them at some point. Hopefully, with a lady. Or...uh...you're talking about your weight, aren't you? Oooooh boooooy...

lol, best be careful with those comments if you'd like to keep your stones!

Hey Tania!

I agree 2000% with AngelicaHope. Even though I know there's no one right way to approach weight loss I haven't come across a more logical, scientific (and dare I say foolproof) method of weight loss and weight maintenance than calculating your BMR, weighing your food, counting calories, and making reasonable adjustments along the way.

Weight loss is important, but larning/training/conditioning yourself to eat a balanced diet is arguably just as (if not more) important. I’m no expert, and at 314lb it’s pretty bold of me to be handing out advice, so please take what I say with a grain of salt, do your own research, REALLY do your own research, and come away from it a more educated eater with a sound plan of action.

Hi,
My name is Kerry and I need to lose this weight I have gained in the past two years. Due to medication, I was on steroids which even made the hospital food taste good, I inhaled everything in sight, and I haven't stopped my bad eating habits, I am at my highest weight I've ever been and I would like to lose it and get back to where I was before my health problems which would be around 130 or so. On the day of my surgery back in March 12, 2007 I was 117 lbs, very skinny for me, and now I'm up to 173! So I have at least 50 lbs to get rid of. I would like to be able to tie my runners without getting out of breath, and I would love to be able to fit into my old jeans again. Thanks, and I hope to make a lot of new friends here. And LOSE WEIGHT! Kerry

Hei tania,

As previously said 3 stones will be very hard. But it is doable:)

Feel free to ask for any advice from me, i lost 4 stones under 4 months.

Thankyou everyone for your comments. I am going to start the calorie counting and burn off what I eat. Without sounding stupid whats a bmr? Someone was saying that you should eat more regularly and less to keep your metabolism going is that true as I would have thought you would have to eat less not more? Wow Lisa that is amazing to do that what's your secret?

basal metabolic rate. =P its how many calories your body burns a day on its own.
here is a calculator for you to check it out^^

yeah lisa... i am also curious... sounds extreme... and quite possible unhealthy =T

Thanks for that so what it says will be how many calories I can consume that will burn straight off then whatever I burn after that will be fat buring? Sorry I all new to it all so just trying to understand all of it lol. Thank you for all your advice you have been brilliant is there anything else you can tell me that will help. You are doing well to lose 20 pounds. Have you ever tried the weight loss pills/shakes or would you not recommend them? Also would you recommend weighing or measuring to see what I have lost as apparently muscle weighs more than fat?

haha i weigh AND measure girl! and then i try on a pair of skinny jeans every now and then sooo i can see how im losing in that respect! take pictures of yourself now and month by month and look for those subtle differences... haha there are sooooo many ways to see progress...

mmm its not the muscle weighs more than fat... it just takes up less space and is denser... the more muscle you have and less fat, the smaller you look... an athletic 175 pound woman will look alot different than an out of shape 175 pound woman.

i dont take weight loss pills... i do take a multivitamin though^^ sooo i cant really say i have an opinion of diet pills... =P

and yes you will pretty much automatically burn those calories and any other calories you burn will help to create a calorie deficit, which will then in turn help you to lose weight^^

the best advice i can give... is eat everything you like but in moderation! dont deprive yourself... i still have a piece of cake when i want... its just not the whole cake! and later on i will make time to help burn it off by exercising. but dont try to change tooo much at once... that is usually setting yourself up for failure... when i would quit before it was because i had tried to change tooo much at once... this time i just started counting calories and powerwalking about 4 miles a day usually about an hour of exercise. now i am up to 5-8 miles a day, i work on my flexibility, i drink lots of water, i take my vitamin, and i keep my proportions under control... if i had tried to do all those things when i first started i would have felt overwhelmed and quit... =T like usual.

just take it one day at a time!

Great post! I was just thinking of how I was going to do changing everything at once, maybe it would be better to focus on one or two things at a time. I think my focus will be to exercise 4 X per week, and drink my water for now. I want this to become a habit. I want to be the best me I can be and I want to feel good. On the up side, I have noticed that since I've been trying to eat better I'm not getting that horrible heartburn like I used to.

ahhh kerry... i have to tell you its a much better idea to just change a few things at a time! hmmm i guess its sort of like learning to swim =P you dont just want to jump right in to the deep end... you take it slow starting out in the kiddie pools and the shallow side and after wetting your feet a little, you go deeper and deeper till finally your swimming =D (haha i dont know where that analogy came from) i know... a couple of weeks ago i decided to try to add strength training to my routine... and i just wasnt ready... sooo i backed off and added a bit more walking. do what works for you and makes you excited! =D

wooh and kerry today is the big day! beginning the challenge ^^ you definitely need to make a diary here =P they are great and gives you another way to get warm support from the others here at the forum^^

haha you too fursey. maybe its time for a diary!? =D

That sounds like a good idea starting a diary. How do you access that part of it? You are full of loads of useful advice. Like the idea of doing it bit at a time as in terms of exercising aswell. I am going to start going to the gym tomorrow and do a good workout atleast 6 days a week. Then after a few weeks up the amount of exercise I do each session

Keep in mind that the most important factor for losing fat is actually in the nutrition arena. No matter how hard you workout, if your diet is full of junk, then your abs will be covered with ugly fat.

Get enough quality protein in the daily diet. Think fiber like vegetables, fruits and high fiber unrefined grains. Don't be afraid to eat fat. This can negatively affect hormone levels in your body. Avoid artificial trans fats from margarines, shortening and hydrogenated oils that are in most processed foods and deep fried foods.

Good luck!

That's where I struggle when it comes to what kind of foods is good and how many carbs, sats, fat and that I should be eating? Also apparently you should stay away from break and rice and pasta but I always thought pasta was good for you?

I can tell you what I'm doing at least... oh, and yeah, pasta is normally low in fiber but not so low in calories - over 200 calories for a cup which is the standard portion. And it's very easy to get more than the standard.

As far as macronutrients - I go for 1 to 1.5g times my 'goal' weight for protein. I.e. I want to be 130, so i try for at least 130g of protein. Over 25g of fiber and under 20g of saturated fat (not required for weight loss, but trying to watch heart health), at least 25% calories from fat (anything under 30% of your calories from fat is a low-fat diet) and fill in the rest with carbs or whatever else I want.

If you feel like you're lethargic or your thoughts are fuzzy when you don't eat many carbs, add more carbs and eat less fat. If you feel bloated and lousy after eating carbs, eat fewer carbs and more (preferably non-saturated) fat.

hey fursey welcome to the forums, sorry I'm a bit late on the conversation and someone may have already brought this up, but the way that i've been succeeding is by gradually adjusting the space between my BMR and calories consumed...kinda like this, BMR+calories burned= x, x-calories consumed = Y. as long as Y is 500 or so per day you will lose around 1 lb per week, I used this as a guiding formula, in my case, my BMR is 2420, meaning my body will use 2420 calories per day for maintenance, as bigger bodies use more calories, my number is more than likely higher than yours, although I don't remember what you said you weighed, in any case, you want your caloric defecit to be at least 500 per day if you would like to lose one pound per week. that is just cutting out an extra 250 calories per day and burning 250 per day, pretty easily achieved....that is kind of how i started out just to get a feel for it, as i've progressed, I've upped my caloric defecit to around 1000 per day, pair that with a balanced diet and plenty of activity, and the weight will start to come off :) like I said sorry if someone already mentioned all of this and once again, welcome to the forum!

You need carbs and whole grains in your diet for sure, you don't need to buy into any diet fads that you may have heard about although obviously, that is completely your choice. Buy yourself a food scale when you get a chance, concentrate on keeping a caloric defecit with excersize and diet. You will succeed in this if you commit to 500 less calories per day whether you do that through diet or excersize or both...i would recommend both :) and yea you have to start a diary, just click on the weight loss diary section and post a new thread, that way you can post every day and we can keep tabs on you :)

I agree with the others that have said to start slow. I dieted in the past, and I just got frustrated and quit. Prior to starting my diet, I was drinking 1000-1500 in Mt Dew/Pepsi alone. My first goal was to give up the soda. I did that in mid-December. It was VERY difficult for me to do, since I work for PEPSI!! But now I'm drinking Aquafina bottled water throughout the day, adding a cyrstal light lemonade to it when I want a little flavor. After the initial headaches from lack of caffeine faded, it was easy!!

My next step was to ditch the fast food. I'm usually crazy busy at work, and I never packed a lunch. Now I bring breakfast and lunch with me to work! Once a week, I will allow myself to go out for a salad, just to get out of the office.

My last step was to get a routine of daily exersize going and cut my calorie intake/eat better, healthier foods. Chicken is my favorite food, and it was easy to switch from fried chicken over to grilling skinless/boneless chicken. Jello, a favorit treat of mine, doesn't taste all that different in the sugarless variety. Light popcorn actually tastes BETTER than movie butter popcorn, now that I've tried it.

Overall it hasn't been that hard. If I get a craving, I'll usually give into it, but watch my portions. I've lost 21 lbs so far, and I'm down 3 pants sizes - from a 16 to a 10! I have customers that come into my work about once a month & they have all noticed my weight loss and compliment me. That gives me the fuel I need to keep it going!!

Hey can someone help me with my BMR??
i wondered what it means etc
i dont have a clue so if some one could enlighten me :)
