Hello to all of you! I just stumbled on this forum, and I'm hoping to get some tips and support here - what I've seen so far looks promising!
OK, here's my story. I am not, never have been, and in all probability will never be a "thin" woman. I am (almost) 5'2", and at my thinnest ever I wore about a 9. I know this gets said a lot, but in my case it's true - I have big bones. Broad shoulders and hips, and to put it delicately, I'm on the busty side. In general I'm OK with that, although I'll admit to feeling a bit freakish when in the presence of one of those tall, willowy women.
Here's the thing, though. Recently I have noticed that I've been packing it on a little. This together with increased fatigue, some hair loss, and some other worrying symptoms led me to my doctor. Turns out, I have an underactive thryoid. I am currently in the process of finding the right dosage - at first my doctor wanted to be cautious and prescribe a low dose, but that's turned out not to work so we're bumping it up a little. Perhaps most disturbingly, my doctor found a swelling on my throat that she diagnosed as the beginnings of a goiter!! The whole thing just terrifies me, that my body could just turn against me like this. But I feel confident (most of the time) that we'll figure it out and I'll be back to full power soon.
Medication isn't the only action I've taken here. For the last three weeks I've been doing 30 minutes a day on an elliptical machine that my in-laws graciously provided for us. It's been slow, but I'm seeing results. I have gotten into some jeans that I'd given up on, and I'm thrilled. But although the weight is coming off, there are some areas that are stubborn. Right around my belly, for instance, and under my chin and around my throat. Thyroid weight, in other words. Hopefully when we work out the right dosage of my Synthroid that will take care of itself, but for the moment it's frustrating.
I'm interested in any and all exercise tips, and as an avid cook I'd love to find some good, healthy recipes. Most importantly, though, I'm interested in connecting with others who suffer or have suffered from thyroid conditions. I'd love to hear how others have dealt with this, and to get and offer some support.
Anyway, that's my wall of text. Hello again to everyone.
