Just getting started - and I need help!

Hey guys,

I'm 23 years old and just about to start working out. I've never really been very fit and I thought it would be good to try and see how far I can push myself.

I'm 5ft5 and I weigh in around 135lb. Overall, I'm quite happy with my weight, however, at first glance I look like a slim guy but I really do not feel that way. My stomach is my worst feature. I hate it. It is big, seriously, the rest of me is pretty skinny then there's my belly that stick out, I look like I'm in early stages of pregnancy lol.

Currently I am doing a lot of walking, with weights in my backpack, and light jogging. I have no actual routine in place right now, I'm just going with it. I know there's no way of burning off a certain area of your body, but could any give me any tips on how to get a flat stomach? Any help with a fitness routine would be great too.

Thanks guys!

How is your diet? Are you eating healthy? Eating good quality protein and calories? That's great that you want to improve your physique all the power to you. You just can't just eat whatever you want and how much you want no matter how much and how hard you exercise thinking that you'll burn it all off. I'm not saying that you do that but it's a common mistake that people make when losing weight. A lot depends on your metabolism ( the rate at which your body burns calories for energy) whether it's fast or slow. Do you do a food journal and write everything that you eat and how much? That I would suggest that's where you start so that you are aware of what you're eating and how much. Do you do any kind of strength training along with some cardio mixed into it?

Please tell me more so that I have an idea where you're at I would really love to help you.

"Currently I am doing a lot of walking, with weights in my backpack, and light jogging."

i strongly disagree with this method of cardiovascular exercise
while walking with weights in your backpack may help strengthen your shoulder muscles it is having no effect on the rise and fall of your heart rate
the most effective means of weight loss is to continously raise and drop your heart rate, this is known as HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training
the best method of doing this, is to setup two markers in a park about 25 metres apart, sprint as fast as you can, for 25 metres, then slow jog two laps, then sprint again, etc etc in repition for roughly 15-20 minutes. In my honest oppinion this is the most effective means of weight loss, this exact workout can work in any of the main cardio setups i.e. riding, running, swimming, skipping just by incorporating the same interval training method
this coupled with a low weight high rep weights routine is the most effective means of weight loss

good luck bud!
