Journey, Not A Destination

It took me a while to learn proper form, 2 trainers later I felt like I knew a secret. I'd look around and see all the bad form and I felt like I was working out smarter and not harder. lol

I sure miss the trainer though, he'd catch my bad form and correct it. Unless I look in a mirror, I can't tell sometimes with free weights.

I can still hear my trainer telling me to drop my shoulders. lol

For me, and in my experience, form is like riding a bike. It's tough to forget. There are however those few exercises that if I don't do them, I get rusty. A huuuuggggeeee majority of people training in gyms today have piss poor form. I'd be willing to bet a huge majority of the members of this very forum has piss poor form. It's ashamed. There aren't a lot of resources (online and in gyms) that teach it.

funny how people think they are working certain muscles, when their form is actually working different muscles.

Yeah, the gyms are rampant with people who just really don't know any better. I used to be one of them. Glad I'm not anymore.

And it's not just about people not knowing any better. The bad thing is our inactive lifestyles (as a society whole) coupled with poor knowledge of lifting exacerbates the problem. Bad form leads to imbalances. Imbalances lead to something known as relative flexibility... which is simply a way of saying the body works in the path of least resistance.

Bad posture anyone?

I heard yoga helps with posture.....:blush5:

My arm was injured when a woman's car stalled in the intersection of a parking lot and I offered to push it out of the way. I was going to push it back into a parking spot and I grabbed it by wrapping my fingers around the front bumper and driving my chest against the grill.

When the car started to move the lady hit the brakes hard right as I was driving it back. I guess she was spooked by it moving and reacted without thinking. Anyway, I heard crunch pop pop at my left elbow on the inside.

It was sore but I thought it was just sprained. Over the next day it was black and blue from mid forearm all the way to the bicep and hurt like hell. Another man would've gone to the Doctor, but not me. No, I just didn't use it much for a year. I'm not sure just what I did to it, but something seperated. Now the bicep on that side is much shorter in length than the right one and the arm is a good deal weaker. This is 7 years ago.

My shoulder I hurt last winter in a freak fall, I pushed away one of the swinging toddler gates that we have all over the house to answer a phone while carrying the 2-year old in my left arm. I pushed it enough so that it sprung back and latched as I stepped forward so I tipped over forward, pivoting over the gate, catching myself with the right arm (hurting the shoulder). So I don't know what I did, it just hurts to lift it over shoulder level. It also hurts whenever I reach behind me and pick something up (imagine you're driving and your 2-year old drops his toy on the floor and you need to reach behind the passenger seat and pick it up).

One of the two places has a licenced physical therapist (the other doesn't say). I suppose if I do have an injury insurance might cover some of it but that's not my goal.

My goal is to learn to weight train to avoid aggravating these injuries and to regain strength in my upper body and core. Ideally I would learn enough in X number of weeks to be able to join a gym and go on my own. I'm guessing 12 - 16 weeks would be enough, but I don't know.

I am leaning that way myself.

Ah..Steve and Sheryl bantering back and forth..it's just like the old days.

Just to explain how the commission works, when a seller signs a listing agreement they agree to pay a certain % commission. When the listing agent puts it on the local MLS, the listing broker agrees to pay the buyer's broker a certain amount of it--usually 40-50% of the total commission. When a dual agent is involved, he/she gets the whole commission (we call this double dipping and it's always welcome :D ) unless she agrees to give back some of the commission to the seller in order to get the sale. Keep in mind that the agent has to pay her broker a split of the commission, so if the total commission is 6%, the agent will usually end up with 2.5-4% depending on her agreement with her broker.

Did you sign buyer agency papers with that agent? Because if you didn't, she isn't a dual agent. She's working ONLY for the seller in that case. Just an FYI. :)

Oh sheesh... sounds like you tore a tendon to me. I know quite a few guys with torn bicep tendons that never did anything for them. Sometimes it requires surgery. Other times not so much.

If it affects the quality of life, and this can be the case is it affects how well you can pursue fitness, I'd imagine it's worth a doc visit. I hate docs just as much as the next guy. I have been to them VERY seldom.

That said, I know when it's a losing battle. I love fitness too much to let something interfere with it to any appreciable extent.

This could be practically anything, but sounds like it hinders you quite a bit.

I'm with you.

However, I sincerely think identifying the problem is extremely important. Some problems will work themselves out. Other problems will worsen if not taken care of, especially when you throw weight training into the mix.

Frankly it's not something I'd work around, but that's just my opinion based on my experience.

Identifying the problem doesn't mean you have to get all hopped up on drugs or get sliced open. It simply means you have a better understanding of what you can and can't do, and potentially how to fix the problems.

Thanks Kimberly... that clears it up a lot for me.

Not that I know of. Well maybe....

I signed something but it specifically states that it's not a contract. At the top it says it's a "Consumer Notice" and it explains a bunch of stuff she is required to disclose, which is required by the state of PA. On it she highlighted the bit about dual agency and whatnot. If this sounds fishy, I could scan it and email it to you. Or type out exactly what it says. Does it seem familiar or not?

That is what we call agency disclosure here in Michigan, but it is not a contract. Therefore, you don't have any dual agency relationship with her. She is working solely for the sellers. She highlighted the bit about dual agency, but the only way she is a dual agent is to have you sign a buyer agency contract. I usually prefer not to be a dual agent, and just keep working only for the sellers in that situation. But she was mistaken to lead you to think she is a dual agent. However, if she thinks she's a dual agent, then let sleeping dogs lie, as she'll be under the impression she has more obligations to you than she actually does. ;)

You and Sheryl are like a modern-day Hepburn and Tracy--only a lot more vulgar and foul-mouthed. :sifone:

Gotcha. At this point it seems like she just wants to get this property sold. I may be naive though.

She brings it out of me, that's for damn sure. It's nice to see her back around these parts.

Oh, I'm sure she just wants to get the property sold..lol. She doesn't get paid unless she does.

I think she brings it out of all of us--her debauchery is like a contagious disease. :D

That's what I figured. So if an agent is sitting on a property for a long time doesn't it get to the point where it's easy to work in the best interest of the transaction just to move the property instead of the seller? Just a hypothetical question.

She's a sick, sick woman.

Not much to report on.

Tomorrow I leave work a half day early. I'm heading down to Atlantic City to go to a concert. I'm not a fan of the band really, but my friend who I haven't seen in a while asked me if I'd like to go and I couldn't say no. I regret doing so since saving money is my prerogative at the moment and AC is not conducive to saving money, lol. But I'll limit the damage for sure.

The band is OAR. We used to listen to them back in college a lot. The concert is at the Borgota.

I think we'll be coming home Thursday evening, late. I'll sleep in on Friday and then Gordy and I are meeting up to get some work done Friday afternoon. It's been over a month since we've met for the business... that's how crazy life has been as of late! Before that we were meeting at least 2 days every single weekend and we had a huge output in terms of productivity to show for it. I'm hoping we can get back to that point. One or two more big pushes and I think we'll have this thing ready to be open.

Amazingly we've got a couple more clients without opening our mouths and the supplemental income is nice. I imagine once it's open the income will be real nice which will seriously cushion the blow of this house if I end up getting it.

Not much to report on the fitness front. I'm just training twice this week. Short, sweet, and heavy workouts. I think I'll start bulking again in another 1-3 weeks. I'm ready. I miss my high volume workouts geared for hypertrophy.

the borgata is an interesting hotel...

all the waitresses are hot :) they get fired if they gain weight :D

Have fun with your friend - the band is just an added bonus..

and get to work on the site -i've got that bottle of gatorade ready to smash over the computer monitor to celebrate :D

I've only ever been in the Borgata once and it was for 10 minutes so I'm excited. I've fished all around it but never spent any amount of time in it.
