Journey, Not A Destination

My eyes are tearing up from quietly trying to hold back laughing right now in my cube. You crack me up. You know damn well he would be the loser shutting his trap and he knows that too. If anything you probably stoked the fire with that comment. You know its only a matter of time before he flares up again...can't wait to hear about it!!

Hahaha!

I'm hoping he realizes he crossed a line... one that shouldn't be crossed again.

Follow the tangent with mal :D

So... 1st anniversary is Paper (or clocks but that's kinda dull)

Paper can come from areas of North Carolina...

The blue ridge mountains are beautiful - especially in the summer (ok prettier in the fall but - we'll t ake what we can get)

parts of the blue ridge mountains have nice easy hiking trails and are also part of the AT... :)

i thin NC would be lovely... :D

We'll see. I need to put some more thought into it. Right now I don't know what I'm doing in ten minutes. July is a lifetime away from my perspective, lol.

I don't have a far commute to work at all, and I think we need to get used to the idea of gas being expensive.

Indeed, I watched a clip the other day about how compared to some of the other countries, our gas is actually cheap. They don't understand what we are complaining about.

I also learned a few years back (Economics Major-but read this article in a Rolling Stone Magazine) that we are at the peak of the curve in terms of the supply of gas--a natural resource. Within the next few years we will start to head from the peak towards the beginning of the downward slope of the curve. Now that leads us to another curve, the textbook supply and demand curve. The price is only going to get higher as supply decreases and demand increases in our industrialized economy.

As soon as I can afford it, I'm going hybrid!!! But for now, might as well drive something that you like for fun!! The Tundra sounds nice, I could see you in one of those.

I've heard a lot of similar things... it will be interesting to see how it all plays out, especially with the confounding pressures of rising demand in these emerging countries and the unstable supply.

There is untapped reserves of oil, though. Right here in our own country I'm sure. But drilling is not something people want in their back yards.

I have an Econ degree too, btw. That shit was boooorrrrriiiinnggg!

If there is any lawn wrasslin' with stupid co-worker, I'd love to be a voyeur. And why not let Gord join in since he's such a good wrestler according to you?

So the wife's gonna be away this weekend eh? Ok ladies, time for a roadtrip to Philly. Just kidding of course. I am a strong believer in not cheating on one's spouse. ;)

As is she. I tried getting her to leave the ring home as she heads off to Atlantic City, hahaha.

Just teasing.

Yup, I'm a bachelor this weekend. Although I won't even get to experience it. I have to go work at Gordy's. But we always have fun anyhow. Too much at that. I just had a serious talk with him yesterday explaining how we have to start, and not keep it permanent, but we have to temporarily treat this business as a job.

One look at gordy's pic and it's easy to tell that he's got a mischievous streak in him... :)

Plan on like 3 hours per day of real work each weekend day and you'll be 6 hours further along than you were before... :) you'll get there... with a big dent made...

you've have a busy week at work - downtime is good too for you long term...

Here's a letter I wrote for a beloved friend I met on the Internet a few years back. People are gathering up pictures and asked people in her life to share thoughts so they could put together a scrap book to give her as a token of appreciation. This is what I did:

NOEL

I could write a book about Noel. In all actuality, a book should be written about Noel. Not only would the book inspire others to demand more from themselves, it would also give its readers the opportunity (small relative to the real thing, but well worth it) to have a piece of Noel in their lives.

I’ve never met Noel beyond the confines of the Internet. We were close to meeting once on that cold, dark day in Ohio. I forget why she backed out of the meeting. I think it had something to do with her being scared of my speed. Or was it my amazing arm-wrestling abilities? Whatever the case may be, it’s something I hope to make up sooner than later.

I met Noel when I joined a forum, can’t remember which one now. All I know is it was a blessing for me to cross her path. What has she done for me personally?

1. Baked and mailed me Monkey Bread. It was stale by the time it arrived in Pennsylvania but I ate it anyway, namely because I’m a fatty but also because how special the baker is. I mean, who does that? Maybe others are more fortunate to have people like Noel in their lives. Not me though. I’ve never had someone send me something like that.

2. Even though I’m not active on the forum for the most part nowadays, Noel will still take time out of her day to email me or text me. The moment I see her name in my inbox or cell, it offers an instantaneous lift in mood… and that’s before I open the message. Just the thought from such an amazing person is lifting.

3. Noel has inspired me. That word gets tossed around like candy nowadays. A simple visit to youtube and you can find a ton of videos that ‘inspire’ you. But this is the real thing. I’m not quite sure how to define it. The best I can do is -- Noel leads a life that people are most likely envious of as well as amazed by. It’s not because of her job, her amazing family, her beauty or anything like that. Rather, it’s because of the ‘matter’ that comprises the core of who she is… her soul if you will. That matter or soul is what drives her to have the work ethic, determination and desire, vision, kindness, consideration and love that is unrivaled by the vast majority of people out there.

Most importantly her soul is what drives her to constantly strive to help anyone lucky enough to find themselves in her path. This help isn’t solely the kind of help that someone needs. Of course she’ll help that person in need. Amazingly though, Noel has a way about her that helps those who don’t even know they need any help. It’s as if she automatically betters things regardless of one’s current state. Even more amazingly is I’m not sure she even realizes she’s doing it. It’s natural.

She exudes this in all interactions I’ve seen her in, which are numerous considering the medium of exchange the Internet is.

4. Related to number 2, she has taught me what it means to be a “shoulder to lean on” as well as a role model. I try to lead by example in all things I set out to do in my life. I try to be a role model; personally… it’s something I pride myself in. Noel though… she’s a role model for role models. That’s an understatement too. The life that she leads on a daily basis is something most can only aspire to do.

I could go on with at least a dozen more points but suffice it to say, Noel is a woman who has made my Top Ten List of Awesome People. They say life is a canvas and we have the ability to paint whatever it is that we desire. Very few people actually realize this though, unfortunately. This world is ugly at times and it’s tough to find beauty in the cracks of darkness. It’s an era where people don’t care. People walk by others without noticing. Without paying attention. Noel represents the counterbalance to these forces. Noel offers hope. Noel is a person who stops and considers how she can positively impact other’s lives.

This book that I hope this letter finds itself in is a representation of appreciation. I’m sure others will have even stronger, more thoughtful words to say compared to this and rightfully so. Add all these tokens of appreciation together though, and you have only a small fraction of the greatness Noel reciprocates to everyone in her life.

I’m not quite sure what else I can say besides thank you.

Thanks Noel for being someone so awesome that no words could begin to describe adequately. This isn’t my attempt to do so, either. This is simply me saying thank you.

For anyone reading this who doesn’t know Noel, I’m sure it sounds too good to be true… as if I’m describing some fictional super hero. You’d be partially right too. Super hero is a spot-on adequate description of this woman. She’s as real as can be though.

With love and appreciation,

Steve

your friend sounds like an awesome person... and she's pretty lucky to have you in her corner as well... people reap what they sow...

Thank you both. It's funny, that letter has done some crazy things. I had a semi-falling out with this particular forum for reasons we don't need to go into. She was the only person that stayed in touch for the most part. The most genuine person I've ever met.

I just so happened to stop by this particular forum for some odd reason yesterday completely out of the blue. Amazingly I had a PM from a woman I had never met before saying:

Hi Steve,

You don't know me but Noel has mentioned many times that she is fond of you- so I thought I would ask you to contribute something to an appreciation book we're creating for her.

Noel has inspired us all through her commitment and devotion to her friends, family and fitness goals. This year for her birthday we thought it would be nice to let her know what she means to us. We would like to assemble a compilation, of any photos, quotes, memories and letters that you see represent her best. We would love for you to be a part of this memory album......

I write that letter yesterday afternoon as soon as I get this PM and email it to this woman. She replies with a lot of thanks and "no wonder Noel speaks so highly of you... this is surely going to make her cry. blah blah blah"

When I get home from work that same woman emails me again asking is she can call me. Interesting to say the least... I email her my number and she calls 30 seconds later, lol.

"Steve, I just wanted to thank you again. I showed your letter to a few of the primary people putting this together for Noel and I'm sure you can guess who some of those people are. Well, I just wanted to say it was really big of you to do that despite the differences."

Me: What differences"

Her: You know, the differences between you and John (we'll call him this).

Mind you, this woman wasn't even on the forum when I was active there.

Me: I wasn't aware that there were differences?

Her: Well I've heard a lot of things and I know John is really intimidated by you. When your name was brought up as a possible contributor he was really taken back.

Mind you, John is a professional in the industry and owns the forum.

It's amazing what people refuse to let go of. The amazing thing was there was never ever a fight or even a disagreement. I simply decided to stop posting on the forum.

This little letter though has all sorts of people from my past emailing and calling me, lol. It's nice to catch up with a few who I genuinely cared about.

Not John's though, obviously. Although this letter also opened up conversations between he and I again... so I suppose that's a good thing. Nothing of substance, just small talk. But good nonetheless.

you're true to who you are.. and that's one of your many good qualities... (probably Noel too I'd imagine) not everyone likes that because they want the ego stroke of always want to be right...

like i am fond of quoting -be who you are and say what you feel for those who mind - dont matter and those who matter.. dont mind.

ya done good... and if it brings a new buddy back into your world - all the better...

Hey Steve! Hope you have a fabulous weekend. I'm going to use my GPS watch tomorrow at my TNT run. I'll let you know how it works if it doesn't break my wrist first. LOL
