Journey, Not A Destination

Here are 2 pics from a shoot that Gordy and I did from our upcoming website. Finally a couple of pics that show I workout and not just stand in front of a mirror taking pictures of myself, lol.

This is a chin-up with a 100lb DB hanging from my waste:

This is the bench press with 315 lbs:

you phrased it so much better the last time you talked about the pull up.. :)

that i was a 100 lb dumbbell hanging between your legs and I was deeply offended that you referred to it as a dumbbell :) ** cuz I have a perverted mind like that**

It's a very impressive weight :)

That's when I was repping out the 50s.

I could only do 2 with the 100.

I was repping out 75s for 5 not too long ago.

Very cute Steve - the way you put it I thought that there was some other website I should be aware of :) haha - I can't wait for the new one to come up!

As for those pics - that's awesome - there are a few guys in my gym who do the chin up w/the db hanging from their waist - I always am blown away by that...I get all excited b/c I am reducing the counter-weight from the chin up machine I use - and I know how hard that is - I am very impressed :)

No problem, you have no idea how much I appreciate you taking the time to answer all of my questions, stupid or otherwise.

As corny as it sounds, there is no stupid question in my book. I can't stress that enough.

I thought about posting this in the exercise forum, but since it's not about weight loss, I figured that I'd just post here, seeing as how you're probably the only other person here who'd either A) Care or B) Know enough about sports training to comment on it.

I'm looking to train up the explosiveness in my legs. Even after all the knee/muscle injuries, I have brought my leg strength back up to a semi-respectable level, doing 500 x 8 today (yes, I was a fruit, and tagged the ends with 2.5's to get the flat 500), and I want to start working explosiveness into the mix, and focus less on big numbers (but not give 'em up).

So, after leaving the beloved squat rack (I left legs after squats, long-base lunges, RDLs, ham curls, and leg extensions), I went to go find my favorite explosion tool, the sandbag. No dice. At this point, I figure on explaining what I'm talking about, as NONE of the staff at Golds had any clue what I was talking about, or why I would even want one. I'm used to a big 'ol rubber tube of sand filled up to different weights (I was looking for 100lbs) which you sling over the top of your shoulders, and do WHATEVER with.

So, deprived of that, I go in search of a place to push a board/weight... there is no surface at the Golds (and none at my house) where I can push a weight across the floor without them shitting a brick.

So... I decide to try something out, and met with partial success. I went back to the squat rack and weighted it at 135. I shouldered it, and went in a slow and controlled manner down to a full squatting position (maybe 5 count down). I paused at the bottom for a split second, and then exploded back up as fast as possible. The first couple, I was clearing 6+ inches with my feet, and I got a sorta good explosive feel. The problem was that with the weight spread out everywhere, it was much harder to control through the explosion, and then I was too worried about the bar flying around to focus on not locking my legs out, and landing softly, etc etc etc. So... I got a pretty good workout there, but I don't think I'd do it again 'cause of risk of injury.

In the end, I ended up going and doing unweighted box jumps to finish everything out, but that still wasn't what I wanted.

So, after reading that whole book, the question I have for you is: Do you have any thoughts about an easier way to train weighted leg explosion with the regular crap in the gym? I spent a good 5 minutes walking around without finding anything that I felt would deliver any real benefit, and getting more and more pissed as I saw the expensive gimmick flashy shit used to lure in the housewives, when they could have gotten better use out of a cheap rubber tube and a couple of bags of sand.

Yeah, Steve is a saint. Haha

Nice lifts there Steve!

Hey Steve, have you ever worked with someone who has a Anterior pelvic tilt?

I noticed my nephew the other day (7years 0ld) seemed as if he showed signs of this. His standing posture greatly resembles that of an anterior pelvic tilt.

I have noticed before his standing posture was slightly odd. But, never did it really hit me as to what it could be until the other day.

Do you think this will likely be corrected as he gets older or do you think he might need some type of physical therapy?
I have never studied this condition in people of such a young age.

I know thats not really enough info for ya, man. But, just throwing that out there to see what you think.

James, I'll hit up that question later tonight or tomorrow..... i'm cleaning up the office heading out in a bit.

Been a while.

And thanks man.

Dude, most people have anterior pelvic tilt nowadays. The hip flexors aren't meant to be contracted for hours on end like they are in most non-active jobs.

What about his posture is hinting you of this?

I haven't seen it in any young people (that young) before.... but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I wouldn't go diagnosing him just yet.... I'd take him to a specialist to get a more clear opinion of what might be going on. It could be a lot of things throwing off posture and it would be good to catch whatever is causing it now.

To put simply, his stomach to chest area seems to protrude forward and ass pokes out to much while shoulders remain back.

Its really not all that easy to describe unless your looking at it. Its somewhat subtle but sometimes it seems more excessive.

Yeah, looking up some pictures and more material on it. I'm fairly certain he is suffering from anterior pelvic tilt with increased lumbar lordosis.

I'd seriously consider sending him to a specialist to be diagnosed.

I mean tight hip flexors are quite easy to fix. A little myofascial release and flexibility work, a little glute activation work, and a couple of weeks go by and you see a marked improvement. But at his age, I'd def. consider getting a serious opinion.

It very well could be... I remember reading stuff about tight hip flexors in adolescents which relates an inhibition of the glutes.

Which, if this is the case, needs what I said above for correction.

Thanks Steve. I'll suggest to my sister she take him to see a specialist.

So, site comming along well? Haha - seems like it taking FOREVER to come about.
