Journey, Not A Destination

i wouldnt consider that a squat.. he's barely stretching out the muscle..

Trust me, I was kidding. I wouldn't call that a squat at all. He's barely breaking the locked-knee position. Pretty much anyone could do that.

my squats my ass goes a lil above my knee caps...

The lower you can get, the more hamstring and glute you'll bring into the movement.

but speaking of legs...

HOLY CRAP

Platz is a juiced up fucking animal. Enormous.

beyond icky...there is a line b/t looking attractive (dare I say sexy???) and looking like you belong in a zoo...

You should see some of these guys in person.... words don't describe. It never fails to amaze me just what the right mixture of drugs and genetics can do in terms of muscular development.

It's not something I ever aspire to look like, but nonetheless it's amazing to me.

And each year they get bigger and bigger.... it's what sells.

What does it sell though?

I know I can be shallow - but in Mal's world, people work out to be more attractive to the opposite sex, or to the same sex, whatever their preference... THAT is just not the least bit attractive...

So is the object to be the biggest kid on the block?

Bobybuilding is an enormous industry. These guys sell out shows, are sponsered out the a-hole, and get paid extreme amounts of money to look like a freak show.

I agree, but they aren't selling sex. They're selling their image and in the bodybuilding industry that's worth a shit ton of money.

And to boot, there are people who actually find this sort of thing attractive. To each his own I say.

So is the object to be the biggest kid on the block?

Bodybuilding, from what I understand, goes through cycles. I admittedly don't follow it much as I don't have a lot of interest in it at all. But what exemplifies a 'winning physique' is completely dependent on the judges. In Arnold's time... it was all about being the biggest. Then it went to being big but not at the cost of perfect symmetry. Then it went back to being the biggest. It cycles.

fascinating...

in a train wreck sort of way..

whatever floats their boats i suppose :D

I agree - I suppose with all of the time they have to put in at the gym to look like that they probably don't have a lot of time for relationships (or booty calls, whatever their preference)...it is definately not attractive to me though...to each his or her own.

Muscle above and beyond the norm has always been put on display. Shit, anything beyond the norm sells usually. Think about how circuses used to be.... they'd have Birtha, the 500 lbs woman on display and in the next tent you've got some muscle guy picking up 8 billion pounds above his head.

There's a lot of odd stuff out there.

Bodybuilding though has definitely become mainstream for the most part.

that's true - extreme sells in any circumstance.

how does someone progress from just wanting to be fit and have some muscle mass to turning yourself into a side show (or the main event as the case may be)?

ya i want to know the answer to this as well. Is it something inside of them that just clicks and all they want is to be "huge", or is it drugs that they get too into to the point of no return.

Competition can be an addiction for people... to be bigger/stronger/faster that those around them...

I've seen what happened to Arnold but what happens to the majority of these people when they're past their 'prime'? Body building competitions have been around since I was a kid -I remember watching them occassionally on Wide World of Sports on Sunday so a lot of early competitors are well into their 50s 60s and older...

I suppose I could google.. :D

Well initially, I think the genetics chose the bodybuilder. It wasn't as popular as it is now. You had a rare breed of guys who were naturally muscular and once they started lifting weights, this genetic feature was magnified and people wanted more of it.

Now though, with bodybuilding being in the limelight and mainstream, it's something some kids aspire to be. These monsters are actually heroes to many, believe it or not. It's sort of a sick industry if you think about it. This day in age and culture where beauty and brawn are everything, the normal media that most unknowing people get their hands on to learn is magazines and such. These forms of media are jammed pack full with roid using men.

Well it doesn't take much to put 2 and 2 together. Combine desperation to look good with a popular media outlet stuffing naturally, unattainable physiques down the throats of the niave.... you're bound to sway people to use drugs.

It's just another form of the skewed reality our media creates.... no different than the shit you see with runway models and the like.

I'm sure there are multiple reasons really.

I mean look at me. I am more muscular than your average person. I aspired to be this way and did the work, continue to do so actually, to enhance this image.

It's just not my sole aspiration.

These guys (and women btw) have a sole desire to be huge. They take it to the next level.

And it's not all bodybuilders I assure you. The stuff that's in the magazines and sells the millions is professional bodybuilding..... this is the roid users.

There are drug-free venues and these guys are real big too. But they aren't freaks. I actually have a lot of respect for them.... they have complete control over their bodies... they dedicate their lives to artistically building their bodies without the use of drugs.

As much as it seems like a show.... it's considered a sport. In this sport though, the performance isn't done at the game. Rather, you perform a life time in the gym to step on stage and show the 'world' what you've created.

It's interesting stuff.

These bodybuilders life span isnt very long right? Lifting incredible amounts of weight can have a toll on the organs, or am i wrong?

I wanted to apologize Steve in case I came off sounding narrow-minded or judgmental. I did not mean any of my comments to sound like that. It is facinating in a way, how someone can have such control overthemselves like that.

I guess all of us in here, even if we aren't bodybuilding, are trying to exert some of that control to an extent. I would love to have some definition down the line, it is just interesting how people go from that to professional bodybuilding, especially for someone who has spent the bulk of their life out of shape.
