Journey, Not A Destination

Today I will be doing upper body, which will consist of:

Flat bench heavy
BB row heavy with supinated grip
Flat bench moderate
BB row moderate
Lat Pulldowns moderate
DB Laterals moderate
Haning leg raises

Plus some body weight stuff

Oh, and a lot of dynamic and static flexibility work. My hips have been tight.

OK, I gotta ask -- so what is "heavy" and what is "moderate"?

Are you asking for the specific weights lifted? Or rep range?

How about I answer both.

What I really meant by heavy was 5 reps per set. By moderate, I really mean anything over 8. Some stuff there will be done with reps of 15 actually.

Weights used will be reduced pretty much from normal workloads. I am actually deloading right now, which means, I am backing off on sets and weights a bit and working my way back up systematically towards my usual weights.

Flat bench, for instance, will be done with 245 lbs. My normal working weight for sets of 5 is 310.

BB rows will be done with 185 lbs. I am weak in this exercise for some reason. My normal working weight is 235 for sets of 5.

The other exercises don't really matter in terms of weight. The intensity sets (sets of 5) are what really matter in terms of muscle maintenance. And in reality, they do matter.... it's just they aren't fun for me. I like going heavy! :p

So if I'm at 150 on the bench, it appears that I'll be around 96 years old by the time I get to 310, assuming I can find some way to keep my body from aging!

BB Rows - I'll be there by age 82. :D

Haha, comparing you to me is futile. Strength increases have been pretty linear for me for some time now. The more advanced you get, the more this becomes a reality as strength gains become harder and harder to come by.

That said, YOU still have a lot of variations and variables to throw at your body. Strength gains will not be as linear for you and because of that, it isn't really possible to predict when you will reach a certain strength for a certain exercise.

So I'm curious -- have you worked with anyone as old as me before? If so, are there any lessons you learned specifically related to age?

I have actually. And wish there were more like you. By the time most people your age get around to hiring a trainer, there are so many imbalances that exist in terms of specific joints and muscles that much of the program consists of corrective exercising.

It is rare to find someone your age walk into a gym and be able to squat deeply.

Also, with age, comes the inability to recover as quick. Part of the reason I stress so often with you the importance of managing fatigue. Once your initial strength gains begin to plateau, and with the next onset of programming, I think we will work in more planned deloads and strategic deconditions.

Can we have a naughty lingerie party for Steve -the heck with the bride getting the goodies -i think he should be modelling some sassy new undies for us :)

I will bump up my running.

So wish me luck. It's been a while since I was very lean. I leave for Hawaii 7/8/07. I want to be ripped by then. :D

Yay for running! :D

I heard that "ripped" is mor like a lean look, not necessarily "bulky" but I have no real idea.

I'm curious, are you going to wear a tux for your wedding, and if so, what size are you looking to fit into? Silly question, but I can imagine it may have to be tailored....ya know? :)

Ripped is ripped. It means lean. Little body fat. That is all.

You can be bulky and ripped at the same time, it all depends how much muscle mass you are carrying. If you have a lot, you will look big and ripped. If you don't have much, you will simply looked ripped.

And I have no idea what my measurements are. I will be getting measured in a week or two.

I don't think it will need much alteration.... I am telling you, I am not BIG.
