Journey, Not A Destination

Quote of the Day

Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.

Do not confuse motion and progress. A rocking horse keeps moving but does not make any progress.

My random thought of the day:

I've been helping a woman lose weight now for a little over a year. I love her, literally. Such a dear friend of mine, I would do anything for her. Last night, we were talking. And she just isn't happy with her progress.

Mind you, she started at 235. She is now 125 lbs, looking very good.

And she is complaining.

Why?

You see, this is what I am talking about when I say, "It is ALL about perception!!"

At the end of last year, she slipped in her efforts. She pigged out during the holidays and had a bad month or two. She lost some ground on her efforts. As I always say, acute setbacks mean absolutely nothing when put in the context of chronic forward progress. You can read that until you are blue in the face, but if you don't understand it.... chances are that no matter how much progress you make, no matter what you accomplish..... you will never be satisfied.

If you don't understand the above phrase and/or if you don't believe it; that means you are always going to allow the negatives to consume your thoughts.

"I've lost 110 lbs and look better than most people, yet, I still have these problem areas. I still have a few dimples on the thighs. Uhggg, they are never going to leave."

"I would be so much further along in terms of progress if I didn't slip up last year. Gosh, why did I do that?"

These are things she was saying to me.

You see, if you allow your perception to travel into these "dark areas" often enough, the general atmosphere of your mind becomes "dark." Your thoughts become negative. Negative thinking is overwhelming. By allowing it to consume you repetitive thoughts, you lose sight of the good stuff. You lose sight of the accomplishments you've already had. How far you've come. You forget that this IS a journey. A journey that you have to be in love with.

In this specific case, she is so close to her end goal. Just a little bit of body recomposition and she has it nailed. Yet, she is still thinking negatively. Imagine what it's like when you HAVEN'T experienced this kind of success YET.

What happens when the accomplishments you have are minute. Like:

1. I tracked my calories for a week.

2. I lost 2 lbs this week.

3. I made it to the gym each day I was schedule for this week.

These things are minute in the grand scheme of things. If people can "blackout" total body transformations with negative thinking and misguided perceptions..... imagine how easily these small accomplishments are negated. And when they are all you have to work with, it is understandable how it's hard to get the ball rolling. Momentum is a hard thing to build in this "game."

So please, please pay attention to your thoughts and perceptions. They are such a critical component to success, especially in the early stages.

what's the old joke -a good friend ill bail you out of jail at 3:00am a great friend will be sitting beside you in jail saying Man that was awesome :)

this is a once in a lifetime party :) enjoy it :) just seriously - NO CAMERAS!!! If you never listen to anything I say -listen to that :D

Haha, so true.

Each of these guys would be right there with me in the jail cell. We are amazingly close.

wow i loved your post on perception. very wise things said there. which is why i'm on this journey and not on some crash diet. i want to enjoy every second of my transformation...both physically and mentally. i am learning to eat like babies are learning to walk and yes i'm in love with that whole process...i intend to eat and live like this for the rest of my life and not just until i lose weight. my perception and perspective did change from where i were just six months ago. i am satisfied with the small and i hope i don't get in a situation where i want perfection. if i ever do...please set me straight :D

Wow...that is so true about perception. I know we all get mired down in the shoulda, woulda, coulda's and I have found that when I do that, it is just a huge mental roadblock for me. It stalls me, because my focus is still in the past. Instead, I have to mentally acknowledge the mistake and "get over it". Tell myself what's done is done. Choose to make a better choice next time and focus on my accomplishments. I believe that our lives are better when we focus on what we have to be grateful for instead of complaining...but for some reason, the complaining seems to come easier (but gratitude feels so much better! :) )

Thanks for your words of wisdom, Steve...that made my day an even better one. :)

Quote of the Day and Random Thought

Brit, for you I will give 3 quotes today.

Begin doing what you want to do now. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand - and melting like a snowflake.

Things won are done; joy's soul lies in the doing.

Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.

Random thought of the day:

Before you are handed a driver's license, it should be required that you qualify by means of an Intelligence Quotient test.

Hey Steve.. have to agree with everyone else on what you wrote. Very insightful and VERY true. We all fall off the bus from time to time.. splurge but, hopefully don't get too down, re-focus and proceed. Your firend has made a remarkable turn around and should be commended for her achievements! Please give her a high-five for me!!:)

I think I am my own worst critic as is everyone else. I know that once I achieved my weight goal and dropped all that weight, I catch myself saying, "What now?", then I eat and gain everything back so I can crash diet all over again.

This time is different.. I made my goal weight and now getting the body out of flab mode and toning it up. I am not there, not where I want to be yet but I am determined not to get down on myself this go around. I feel better than ever and honestly feel like I am in the best shape I've been since my High School days.

Thanks for that post Steve! Have a good one bud!

Bruce

Glad you enjoyed it, Beth! And thanks. :)

Regarding things we are grateful for, I used to write down 5 things every day that I am grateful for. I think I am going to start doing that again.

before a person is handed a child the same test should apply - actually a common sense test should be administered :D

Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.
I like that quote... I even know who said it :) Nice selections today..
