Joining my first Gym, suggestions?

It's less than a month to go until I return to Uni, and therefore achieving part of my New Years Resolution by joining a gym. Thus, for preparation, can someone recommend me some equipment to use, giving a brief explanation of how it works and what it achieves? (Assuming I have absolutely NO knowledge on how this works)

Furthermore, how many days a week should I start attending? For how long? Should I do weights straight after the cardio or in a separate session?

Where do you live?
Do you have Crunch near you? I love it. Tons of classes, gets crowdid though, I live in Manhattan, try to go on non peak hours.
