jogging

at 5mph on my treadmill, how long can i jog without losing muscle?!?, i currently jog 45 minutes, but i want to know the maximum time i can jog on the treadmill without it affecting my muscles decreasement.

I've been told by a trained exercise physiologist that at your target heart rate, you shouldn't do cardio for more than 45 minutes without eating or resting or your muscles will start to get used for energy. So try an energy bar or some peanut butter or even a sports drink to give your body something to burn besides itself. Or do two different workouts with time and food in between.

I learned this at a fitness retreat where we worked out up to seven times a day, but not for longer than 45 minutes at a time or not at target heart rate for the whole time.

On average, an individual will utilize approximately 10% of all energy sources from protein or muscle breakdown.

Muscle breakdown should not be a problem as long as you have glycogen stores in your system. 45 minutes at 5 miles per hour should not be a problem as long as you are not exercising on a completely empty stomach.

Depending on an individuals fitness level and nutritional intake, it might take approximately one hour on high intensity exercise to deplete glycogen stores.

Hope this helps
