It is true if you are running long distances. Theres really not a magic line that says when it starts becoming bad. One thing you could do is ad in special insoles for running. Another thing you could do I stay in the grass. Both keep some of the shock off the knees. Grass running will actually be a bit tougher and shorten your distance most likely. Also, you could try to find a gym that has a indoor track. Most gyms are now using a rubber surface on there tracks to help eleviate some of the shock as well.

I developed a knee injury whilst running on the road for years. I would suggest if you haven't got bad knees now then don't worry about it. To prevent it wear good running shoes and ensure that you stride is correct. If you are tired don't run!

thats crazy i run 2.5-3 miles on the road everyday and have delveloped knee problems but i have too for track/cross country running to train but adn dont have much grass too run on.........what can i do since i am 16 but can drive to the gym and stuff!!!!

Everyone is different. I know long distance runners who have run on cement for years without ever having an injury, and then there is me who varies the surfaces I run on and does everything "right" and I still get injury flare ups (biomechanics). There are many factors that can lead to injury, but for safety's sake it is not a bad idea to vary the surfaces you run on. Not only your knees, but your whole body will thank you.

Cement I believe is the absolute worse surface to be running distances on for a lengthened period of time.

It is harder than asphault and gives nothing in means for your body to withhold the pounding of each step.

Asphalt is better, but a nice gravel path, or even grass is best.
