Jessie's Diary - Joshi Detox

So I'm planning on doing a detox. Not one of those extreme ones where you live off liquids for days on end starving yourself! I am going to be following a detox set out by a Dr. Nash Joshi. He is a doctor in London and has his own practice. He focuses on the Ayurvedic practice of medicine. It's all about eating clean healthy nutritious foods, no chemicals, artificial flavors, etc. I randomly came accross his book recently and thought id give it a shot.

This detox appealed to me because it's supposed to get rid of ailments like headaches, bloating, heartburn, etc. Basically making my body as healthy and toxin free as it can be.

For 3 weeks to kick start my healthy way of eating I'll be avoiding most dairy, wheat, red meat, etc. I'll be eating 5 meals/day consisting of whole grain rice, live yogurt, lots of veggies, lentils, chicken, fish, etc.

Right now I'm 5'8 and.....ugh...200 pounds. I've really been doing a lot of "emotional eating" the last few months and I want to lose about 45-50 pounds.

My brother is getting married in march 2011 and right now I can't phathom putting on a dress. So my goal is 40 pounds in 6 months. Lots of healthy, chemical free foods as well as spinning classes, hot yoga and pilates classes, hopefully 6 days/ week. Am I biting off more than I can chew? Maybe. It's a little intimidating. I plan to start next Monday to give myself so time to join a gym, get some groceries, etc. So sept 27 it is..a journey to a new me. At least I really really hope so :)

um..well good luck but let me ask you something..can you define what toxins you have that are causing these problems? I'm asking because not one single person who comes here using detox or claiming detox has even been able to answer that. Not a single one. The reason is detox is a buzz word. It's a bit of an advertising claim.

Eating well? Good.
Reducing your calories to lose weight? Good.
Exercising? Good.
Detox? ...well....don't expect their claims to come true.

Remember, Diet is actually a life-long change in how you eat. Whatever you do to lose weight should be things you can do for life. It is about learning about calories and portion control. It's about making the right choices. If you look at what this guy suggests to do and how to do it, is it the right choice? If you feel like it is, then I wish you nothing but success and good luck.

Thanks! And I know what you mean about the "detox" buzzword. Ultimately this "detox" is just eating healthy clean food, working out, drinking lots of water and controlling portions. I've consulted my naturopath who believes that dairy and wheat could be contributing to my asthma. So he has also advised that I try cutting way back on these things for a fee wks and see what happens. And actually the purpose of this way of eating isn't to loose weight, it's a side effect because you're eating healthier, smaller portions, working out, etc.

Unfortunately when ppl hear the work "detox" they think oh great, another fad diet for quick short term weight loss. I been known roll my eyes too! lol this is just good old healthy clean eating :)

Thanks for your input!

Cheers

dairy and wheat causes asthma? I'll be honest, that's the first time I've ever heard that. I did have to look up what a naturopath is.

Well, I wish you luck!

Nope not cause asthma, but can exacerbate symptoms in those who have asthma. Lots of research on it online. If you google asthma and wheat allergy or asthma and dairy allergy lots of studies on it. Interesting stuff.

Well, after checking sites that aren't connected to people trying to sell their diet, book, or products (ugh) the best I can find is mayo clinic:

Foods and nutrients that may help reduce asthma symptoms include:

Fruits and vegetables. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables may increase lung function and reduce asthma symptoms. These foods are rich in protective nutrients (antioxidants) that boost the immune system.

Omega-3 fatty acids. Found in fish, flaxseed and other foods, these healthy oils may reduce the inflammation that leads to asthma symptoms. They also appear to have a number of other health benefits.

Foods that may worsen asthma symptoms include:

Foods high in saturated fat. These fats, which are solid at room temperature, are found in foods such as red meats and butter. They may cause an immune system response that worsens asthma symptoms.

Salty food. High sodium levels may worsen the immune system response that causes asthma symptoms.

Foods that have caused a reaction in the past. Any foods that have caused an allergic reaction or digestive problems in the past may be more likely to cause asthma symptoms.

Food additives and preservatives. Artificial sweeteners, food preservatives and food colorings may cause reactions in some people. Examples include aspartame, sulfites, benzoates and yellow dye #5.

Milk products. In some people, milk and other dairy products increase mucus production and worsen asthma symptoms. You may want to eliminate milk products for a trial period to see if it helps. If you do cut milk products out of your diet, make sure you're getting plenty of calcium and vitamin D from other sources. Some people who are bothered by milk find that cheese and other cultured milk products are OK.

Good luck!! If this detox doesn't pan out then you can just try something new! Let us know how it goes and we're here if you need any support ^_^

Hey thanks so much sunflower! I really appreciate it. Looking forward to getting healthy again :)

Cheers

Hey Jesais, good on you! Are you cutting out sugar as well? I've heard it can contribute to bloating. Haha. Just kidding. You're doing great. :)
