Jeff's Diary

A little about myself. I just turned 39, a dad to three great boys, live just outside of Boston, have gained about 5-10lbs a year for the last 20 years. Yikes. My high was 312.6 pounds a couple weeks ago and last week was 310. I have a weigh in tonight that I'm feeling ok about, probably down 2 or 3 pounds. Ultimately I would like to get down to 170 pounds. I have lost some weight before but always seem to get bored and stop and then put it all back on and then some. 4 years ago I got down to 245, I was feeling great and then just stopped. Put the pounds back on, got down to 260 the next year and got bored again. That was my last decent attempt at this. I have tried to get myself started again time and time again but couldn't commit to something. Even the last two weeks when I have been logging everything I eat, and trying so damn hard to eat correctly my mind will wander and I will eat something crappy. But at least at this point my better eating is winning versus my poor choices.

That being said I stumbled upon this forum and it looks great. I hope to use it to ramble on about my thoughts, write about the good going on, ask for some help along the way, and be able to offer some advice and help to others. Feel free to comment and join me on this crazy journey. :banghead:

Beginning of Week 3

So I was down a pound last week. I have mixed feelings about it. It's a loss, and I made a couple bad choices over the weekend. But I know it should have been better. So this week it will be 7 days in a row of staying strictly on my plan. I am also going to start walking again this week. Back when I was starting to be successful with this before I was walking 4+ miles a day. Now I struggle to do a mile, back hurts like hell. But I will do a small amount in the morning and another small amount in the evening and build up from there. I have done well the last 24 hours eating, had a turkey on wheat sandwich with mustard for lunch with a small amount of almonds, apple for a snack, salad and grilled shrimp with some steamed rice and green beans for dinner, glass of milk banana and a Fiber One bar for breakfast. Working on the road today so I am going to pack a lunch to take with me along with a couple pieces of fruit.

Thank you. I know it took 20 years to get to this point so I know I can't do it all overnight. Starting is a good thing, staying with it will be a great thing. I'm thinking a big party a couple years from now.

as much as I sometimes hate the Smileys I had to use it.

I just noticed this at the top of the forum so I figured I would write them down.

-- How much weight do you want to lose? 140-145 pounds

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight? 1 1/2 years

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)? be careful of what I eat, writing down my food, blogging about my accomplishments/disappoinments, exercising regularly

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal? blogging,

-- How realistic is your goal? very realistic

-- When will you start? I started on 4/2

1. What is your current height and weight? I am 5'11 and 309 pounds

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? 165

3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? 250

4. Why do you want to lose weight? To feel better about myself, to be a role model for my kids, to weigh less in my 40's than I did in my 20's and 30's

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? I turn 40 in one year. I would like to be below 200 for that birthday

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? I work way too much and use that as an excuse why not to go to the gym or for a walk. I need to make time and stick to it

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? I have thought it for the last few years, weight kept going up

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Plan better, plan meus out in advance and buy those foods, eat out less, stick to exercise times and don't use excuses not to exercise

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? Yes, eating good healthy foods and exercising

10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? I got bored or I would hit a plateau and give up

11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? I have always lost weight when I wanted to

12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? I am doing this now and will continue to do so

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? Not as much as I should. I do love to grill so I eat a lot of chicken, an occasional steak. In the house I bought a wok and can stir fry vegetables. I am also trying to cook more fish now.

14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? 3 or 4 nights a week

15. What are your three favorite foods? steak, steak, and steak seriously it would be steak, fried clams, good bbq ribs

16. What are your three favorite restaurants? no favorites, I eat almost anywhere

17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? be more cautious of what I am eating, smaller portions, snack on healthy foods in between meals

28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? local park, I belong to a gym, I can't remember where it is lol

29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise? walking, weights, playing basketball

30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? I have a picture of fat me on my bulletin board by my desk. I hoping looking at that every morning will remind me of why I am doing this. I hope to lose about 10 pounds a month at first and as I get closer to goal I know this will be tougher to accomplish

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals? I have thought that I would put aside x amount of $s for every day I stick to a good eating plan and exercise. Then at the end of the month I would buy myself something cool.

So yesterday was good. I ate well, 4 small meals, I snacked well, fruits, I walked 25 minutes and my back was fine with that. I will do it again today.

25 minutes is good... consistency is what gets results -there's no sense pushing yourself too hard where you're in pain for a few days and not able to do anything - little bits every day will get you to where you want to be...

Gold Star!!

Yesterday went well. Got in lots of fruits and veggies, had some fish for dinner with a salad and a small portion of rice. small turkey sub with mustard and lettuce for lunch. Busy weekend planned, 3 baseball games with the kids, one has to go to a birthday party, I need to work for about 4 hours catching up. I need to get outside and start the getting the yard in shape, this is the first weekend where the sun is out in a couple months. Plus I would like to walk both days as well. My youngest one likes to walk so I know he'll go with me, maybe we'll go in a few, that will get me going for the day. I'm feeling good, easier to get up in the morning, more energy. I was sooo tempted last night. I looked at the dessert menu while the kids ate there ice cream sundaes and I wanted something badly, but I walked out without ordering anything and came home and had 1/2 cup of Bryers no fat ice cream, very low on calories and not too bad taste wise and I kept the portion in control. Have a good weekend everybody.

Looks like you're off to a great start. That took some commitment to pass on the sundaes and eat a safer treat at home.

Keep up the great work!

Thank you for nice comment. It was a tough moment but in the end I was extremely happy that I made a good choice.

What a busy weekend, a couple of kids baseball games, a birthday dinner, some work, playing taxi driver. Phew, sometimes I'm glad it is Monday. I had a good weekend food wise, ate good meals, lots of fruits and veggies. There was one bad choice on Saturday night at a birthday dinner I had a piece of cheesecake. I tried not to order it but the temptation was too great. But when I figured out my data for the week I am within my guidelines so I feel ok with it. I think it is good to reward yourself every now and then as long as you don't over indulge and go nuts. I've had some cantelope and a banana this morning and I am toasting a whole wheat english muffin. I plan on walking during lunch which is the one thing I did not do this weekend. I haven't stepped on a scale since last Wednesday but I feel good so that's a good thing.

There's nothing wrong with a treat now and then if it helps keep you on track in the long haul. If I want something not-so-good I just figure out what it's worth to me. A longer walk? 200 less calories/day for the next 2 days? Whatever. You can't go the rest of your life avoiding such things. So just plan for them and be smart about it and I think you'll be fine.

walked 40 minutes today on a hilly trail by house. It felt good, legs burned a bit. I feel good now. I battled some craves today and nibbled on carrrots, had a couple apples and a Fiber One bar. Those things are good. I need to figure out dinner plans.

Congrats on your loss and avoiding those cravings, you are doing great! MMM cheesecake, I think you did great with allowing yourself a treat without overindulging. Keep up the good fight, We can do it!

Dinner was good last night, some tilapia, a small portion of rice, and some steamed veggies. I have eaten a ton of fish this past week. I am feeling a little blah this morning. Maybe its because the house is cold, but the sun is out and it is supposed to be a good day today. I will get out and walk later on. I weigh in tomorrow, I do feel better and lighter, pants seem to fit a lot looser, no longer an issue of sucking in as much as possible to get the button through the hole.

Have a great day everyone. And thanks for the words of encouragement, they help a lot.

I've got to start adding more fish to my diet. Unfortunately, my favourite is breaded with an arseload of fries. :D I have to get used to eating fish in a healthy manner. Wanted to buy some for dinner this week but didn't get around to it. Definitely for next week.

darwinfish, you should try broiled fish. A good broiled orange roughy is comparable to a nice steak as far as taste goes, imho. I dont care for "fishy" fish myself. I like orange roughy, tilapia and rockfish, and salmon is starting to grow on me. I just got some rockfish yesterday at the store. I've never cooked it myself, but hope it turns out well.

Oh and Jeff, glad to hear you are alreayd feeling/seeing results of the changes you have made. I took one walk this morning, and will likely walk up with the dog and pick up the kids this afternoon. Was a bit cloudy here in MD, but sun comin out now. Maybe I'll get some yard work done too!Good luck with scale tomorrow!

It's been a busy couple days. Things have been good, another busy day today but I plan on getting a walk in tonight. I've been eating great the last couple days. And yesterday I weighed in and have lost 2 more pounds bring my total to 5.6. Got to run, I will post more tomorrow.

Things have been great. Eating well, watching food type and portions, got walks in Thursday and yesterday, feeling good, walks getting easier. I put together a calendar with some workout days so I can plan ahead a bit better. Have food menus planned for the next few days with groceries bought. It's been a good week. I went to a Red Sox game and had nothing but one light beer, passed on the hot dogs, sausages, pretzels. Went to the movies last night and did not get any snacks or popcorn. You can still watch a movie without popcorn. :lurk5:

Anyway, things are good, and I am feeling great. Need to keep the momentum going.
