I'm sorry you've hit a dry patch - though a month in it's understandable that the first enthusiastic drive has worn out a little bit - like a swimmer diving in, and getting a fair way along the pool (bigger than a pool! a lake!) and then having to settle down to a steady, wearing rhythm. (How on earth did I go from a dry patch to swimming in a lake? )
Hang in there, Caligirl, and look around for as many other ways to ease stress as you can. (Long hot shower and an early night with a take-it-easy book?)

Hey @CaliGirl
I've read your first message here and I analyzed what you eat.
Do you want to just lose weight (improve your appearance), or treat your reflux as well?

It is really important to take care of reflux symptoms because it can get worse which means it will badly affect other organs' work too.
The products you eat right now can make you feel the reflux symptoms more.
While you'll improve your eating habits and your digestive system will work better and better you'll see that the losing weight process will be much easier :)

Weight Today: 61.2kg

Food Intake:
1 banana
2 eggs
Handful of baby spinach
200g of apple/grape/strawberry fruit salad
2 DF/GF slices of bread with seeds
2 slices of roast turkey
1/2 tbsp of DF butter
1 teaspoon of GF/DF mayo and 1 of ketchup
2 cups of 2in1 Nescafé
300g of lentil and smoked bacon soup
1/2 tbsp of LF cream cheese

Exercise:
15.5 km on treadmill
5km on stationary bike
100 squats
30 triceps dips

Notes: thanks everyone for the words of encouragement...feeling a bit better today. Half-marathon training is going well, I have about a month left and my goal is to make the 21km under 2:30hrs. Another sweet less Tuesday under my belt, and I have two weeks left till carnaval (and yes I will be eating sweets on Fat Tuesday) and then on Ash Wednesday I start lent 40 days without sweets (apart from fruit)...I always feel a big difference in my health and my body whenever I cut off the sweets, it really feels like a cleanse to me. On another note, I will be cooking a big and fattening meal for Valentine’s Day (Brazilian lasagna and chocolate/biscuit mousse)...my goal is to make this meal with the most substitutes (lactose free and gluten free) as possible. Instead of beef for the lasagna I think I will do pork (since I’m intolerant to beef) and for the chocolate mousse I may have to try my hand at making homemade lactose free condensed milk. Wish me luck...in the kitchen and on the scale the day after, Lol

Xx

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better. Good luck with the Valentines dinner & check-in next day, xoxo

hello FoodC, thanks for the feedback. I have many issues that affect my reflux - mine is hereditary and also a vain that cuts into my esophagus - other digestive issues. Additionally, my food intolerances obviously play a role as well. I take my health very seriously and often consult with my doctors on what’s the best approach to deal with my condition...ultimately (in order to avoid taking the medication they prescribed to help with digestion and lactaid pills) I think the best way is to control the food I eat. As long as I stick to GF/DF, avoid beef, potato, rice, fried food and other things I’m intolerant to my reflux improves heaps...another factor that helps me is eating only if I’m hungry and not forcing down food (since I was a little girl - 9yrs I have established that whenever I eat before 10:30am and past 7pm my stomach has a hard time with digestion). Because my weight is normal for my height and I am at great fitness level, weight loss has never been a concern as much as my health. It is true though that naturally, whenever I eat healthy (and by that I mean strictly eat on times indicated and foods I’m not intolerant to) my weight naturally drops because my gut health improves.

But to answer your question...my goal is to continue practicing an 80/20 system without taking medication. What that means to me is...from Sunday’s to Thursday’s I eat foods that don’t make me sick at times that don’t make me sick (that includes yummy foods as long as they are gluten/lactose free). Then on Fridays and Saturdays I allow myself to have a cheat meal in the day with something that perhaps isn’t so healthy and am more flexible with eating times. This is the approach I found that allows me some balance, controls my weight within healthy range, allows for improved mental health and is sustainable long term. I feel so sick after eating poorly that I desire to go back to eating healthy naturally...I think if I took the medication OR was too radical about it (not allowing myself treats altogether) I would go down on a rabbit hole of constant indulgent.

For what it's worth - I thought Sundays in Lent weren't fasting days - that Sunday is never a fasting day? But:
a) I expect it differs tradition to tradition, and
b) I'm not an expert in any of the traditions!

If you were to count the Sundays as well it´d be well over 40 days of Lent. But do whatever makes YOU feel good!

Indeed ladies...if counting Sundays lent is a total of 46days instead of 40, but ever since I decided to practice *lent fasting I always included Sundays because I don´t practice fasting as people did back in the days, eating very little and basically cutting most foods and taking Sundays as a day off from fasting during lent. I do what most people do in modern days which is just giving up a vice/temptation (in my case, sweets) for the duration of the whole lent period. The article below gives a good explanation on Lent traditions:
BBC - Religions - Christianity: Lent

I prefer natural treatments, without medications if it isn't needed.
If you want to be free from reflux:
I would suggest for you a really easy to digest diet, eat probiotic food, drink a good quality (not cheap), a natural aloe drink without sugar.

and avoid those products:
  • fatty foods, especially fatty species of meat and poultry, e.g. duck, pork knuckle, and sausages, e.g. ham, salami, pate
  • fat dairy products, e.g. cheese, camembert and brie, processed cheese, creme cheese
  • fast-food
  • tomatoes, onions, garlic
  • dishes and products with the addition of vinegar, e.g. marinated mushrooms, salads with the addition of vinaigrette
  • spicy spices, e.g. pepper, chili, curry
  • chocolate, chocolate candies, candy bars, chocolate cakes
  • carbonated drinks
  • black tea, mint tea
  • juices: orange, lemon, grapefruit, tomato
  • strong coffee and tea (especially on an empty stomach) and alcohol
Eat your meal every 4-5h
Eat your dinner 4h before sleep
Do not lay down by 2 hours after your meal

I would suggest to not do your cheat meal weekends.
Organism needs about 4-6 months to heal itself but only with the right diet. It can be a healthy, diet for weight loss but with rules for reflux.
This is what clinical nutritionists should know about :) I had patients like you and it is not that hard process but you have to be patient.

Hello Everyone,

I have been MIA because I’ve been really struggling with my ovarian cyst situation and back/stomach pains that are likely stemming from it. To the point that eating healthy and exercising (while helpful to a certain extent) were no longer being sufficient. I am starting a medication today so that I can do a couple of exams next week. As I said my food and exercise have been consistent (weight today was 60.1kg) but I haven’t been in a mood to track or write any of it because I have been struggling with pain, and becoming stressed with everything :confused:

That being said, today is Fat Tuesday and tomorrow I start Lent (no sweets for 46days, apart from fruit)...the past few days (Sunday and Monday) I had no sweets either because I could barely stomach anything from all the pain I was feeling. Lent period will be a good detox on my body, I will try to aim for no alcohol (which I only do max of 1-2 glasses of wine a month anyways) and decrease my coffee consumption as well.
On Sunday, despite feeling poorly, I went for a practice run for my upcoming half marathon (did 17km in 1:45hrs which it was great considering it all). It does concern me that while running I felt better dealing with pain and helped with reflux, but after I finished I felt cold, got a low fever and stomach was in shambles. My whole body felt alright (not sore from the run) but my low stomach was distended and my lower back was having sharp pains...it certainly felt like the whole ovarian cysts thing playing up. I’ve read in some instances that while moderate exercise helps, more intensive ones can cause lots of pain and discomfort and the whole rupture thing - didn’t feel sharp pain, so no rupture this time as I’ve experienced that before. I do have an ultrasound next week and doctor will give me the run down if doing this half marathon thing is safe if she determines my case is a bit more serious and I will likely need intervention (cyst removal for analysis).

hope all is well with everyone, I will try not to disappear and come post as long as I’m feeling alright. Today is a better day than yesterday and it’s one day at a time!

Xx

I´m sorry to hear you´ve been struggling so much, health-wise. Hope the upcoming doctor´s visits bring help!

I'm sorry you have had such a rough time Cali. Well done on being consistent with your food & exercise through it all. Good luck with it all xo
