IT Band Syndrome

Well, it seems I have defied the term "overuse" injury because I started having IT band pain on my second run ever.

I thought it was getting a little better but after this morning's run I'm in pretty bad shape (after only 3 miles). It's been a month and a half and this is still going strong. I left a message with a Sports Medicine place to make an appointment and still haven't heard back.

Is this something I can get over or is it a lifelong struggle?

here is a site that talks about it. Ignore the sales pitch, the info is pretty on mark, they don't however mention that there is also a surgery that can be done (last resort). I have this problem too, but I have many strikes against me to work thru it without the surgery so I choose not to do anymore running. :( But depending on how far it has gotten you may be able to "fix" it with some exercises, and TLC :)

hmmm...that was interesting. All the experts everywhere I looked said to use ice, but that actually made it feel worse. Today I decided to try a hot bath with some epsom salt and I got probably 95% relief within 5 minutes. I went from having to walk stiff legged and grimacing when I had to bend my knee to virtually no pain.

Maybe I'll try that every day and see what happens

That's funny, that's the same site I found. I've been doing those exercises for a couple weeks. I also bought an IT band wrap by Pro Tec.

I just wonder why this is happening...I don't over pronate (I think it's possible I supinate though as my shoes wear slightly more on the outside edge if I look closely) , I don't have bowed legs, I'm not aware that one leg is longer than the other, but I suppose it's possible

From what I understand about it, you can get it for a number of reasons. Some genetic, some training. I guess the most common is not doing enough stretching out before exercising. It can be caused by running, biking, or weightlifting (dead lifts or squats especially).

For me it isn't the exercising that did it it is that I have flat feet, bow legs, pronation of the foot, and I broke one of my arch bones in my twenties. I'm as flexible as hell, but that doesn't help when I have all these strikes against me.

If the heat helped you, then it may be that you need to do the exercises and stretching to help you be more flexible and put less tension on that band.

of course it could be genes....just kidding....doesn't sound like it.....:)

One more thing....

I have also heard of a deep tissue massage from a physical therapist that could help. Not sure if there is a specific name for it, but my DH was suggesting it for me to help with mine, but I am far past that. Maybe it would be another option for you?

No kidding, I need a cold shower after watching that.

I actually looked it up last night, but that demonstrates it a little better. I went and bought a large size pool "noodle" to try it with.

I think it really did help, but man it hurts like hell while I'm doing it. Is that to be expected?
 
I was at Dick's sporting goods and noticed they had some high density foam rollers so I got one. It came with a DVD of a whole routine to do including IT band. Holy ****! that is hardcore ...it hurts! It hurts so good though, and you know if it hurts that much you really needed it.

Yeah miofascial release is best performed with some rest inbetween like once evey 24 hours. It can cause a little micro trauma and yes it is uncomfortable but you learn to love it!
 
I got a little carried away...I already love it. Actually I'm a little anxious because I'm going to visit my wife for the weekend (she's on a business trip) and I just don't have room to pack it. I'll have to go one entire day without it LOL.

I'll start doing it once a day. I am slightly sore come to think of it
 
Put it down your pants muahahahaha your wife will be very impressed :D
