Islandgirl's Diary-Day 1: Yo-yo no more

It's time to get serious. I've been dieting on and off since I was just a child. I was never extremely overweight, but always uncomfortable with my weight, and I am almost as heavy as I have ever been. I've started and stopped diet plans more times than I can remember, and it's gotten really old. I need to make a change and stick with it. I know I am capable of making this change... I just need to get determined enough.

Current Challenges and Possible Remedies:
1) :confused: A non-dieter in the house and food is shared = unhealthy choices abound;
:) Eat these in moderation, so as not to lose control after forbidding them from my diet
2) :confused: A weight-loss buddy who has different fitness abilities from mine;
:) Modify my workout so that we are working together, but I'm adding extra activity
3) :confused: I am a semi-vegetarian, and I tend to load up on carbs and fatty proteins to accommodate the lack of meat in my diet;
:) Pair up carbs with veggies or lean proteins--a one-for-one deal. Also, include more lean non-meat proteins in daily meals.

All right, here goes!!! Islandgirl

Island Girl,
Welcome to your diary :D

Congratulations on taking the steps to reach your fitness goals! It's great that you have looked at the challenges and have a plan for dealing with them!

Sometimes, I think just being *aware* is the best thing we can do for ourselves!

I have never been a yo-yo dieter, I was just a steady climber ;) However, when I decided that I was going to lose this weight, I took a long look at why I felt people yo-yo'd or regained lost weight.

What I came to was that I could not "diet". Like you, I have non dieters in the house, and there's all kinds of not so great choices ;) I had to find something that works for me that does not put any food on an elimation list. I had to eat what my family was eating. On top of that, I had to learn what normal, healthy portions really are. In doing so, it lays the ground work for being able to *maintain* the loss once we reach our goals.

You hit the nail on the head in your #1. Challenge Solution
Eat these in moderation, so as not to lose control after forbidding them from my diet

Good for you!!
:)

Day 2: Have your cake and eat it too?

Dariqueen: Thanks for your encouragement!

M2M: Thank you also for your encouragement, and your insight is so very true!

My first day wasn't too shabby (but by no means strict), minus a cake-sized bump in the road. I managed to eat a large piece of birthday cake (yikes!) with the justification of it being a special holiday food, and seeing someone else eat a similar sized piece. A better plan would have been to cut a small piece and savor it.

Eating consciously was an excellent way for me to get through lunch, which was my first meal that day = very hungry! I thought about every bite, sipped a large glass of water, and made the meal last longer than 20 minutes. I was quite satisfied with my lunch and my eating behavior after doing this. :D
