Is this true

"When your benching you should use a wider grip because that form uses more of your chest then your triceps and you will make gains faster"

This is what a friend of mine told me, do you all agree with it?

I'd go as wide as teh competition would let me.. but for a different reason..

"""As a general rule, most powerlifters will use a wide grip, shortening the distance the bar must travel and reducing the necessary work to lockout the weight.(10, 36) A narrow grip enables lifters to generate more force initially, but hinders force production at lockout. A wider grip has been shown to limit initial force production.(31) It is also worth noting that a wider grip generally allows far less horizontal bar displacement than a closer grip. Contrary to por belief, a wider grip does not stress the pectorals more than a closer grip, although the triceps are recruited to a much greater degree with a narrower grip due to the greater vertical displacement of the bar.(10) While there is no greater recruitment of the pectorals secondary to a wider grip, the muscles will be subject to a greater stretch, which can result in increased force generation.(19)"""

I think it's worth noting that there was a t-nation article stating that if you exert inward force when you use a barbell, it would use more of your chest.. and outward force uses more of your triceps.

And a personal observation.. not sure if this is common knowledge or what, but if I let the inside of the dumbells point slightly downward (like.. \ / but obviously a lot less of a slant), it works more of my chest, and vice versa. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why my left tricep was bigger than my right, but my left pec was a lot smaller than my right.

^^Same thing with the different grip on the smith machines, horizontal is more chest and vertical is more tri's..

EDIT -- Retracting the statement. I heard this second hand and talked to the source and found it wasn't true.

Interesting Cynic ....where did you read or hear about that ??

jpc, I should have confirmed this before posting. I heard it second hand and should have gone to the source instead, but it's an incorrect statement.
