Is this normal?

Hi Folks

I'm very new to exercise (2 weeks in) and I'd like some advice.

Yesterday, I had a 1/2 hour session with a PT who worked me hard... my pulse rate went to 181 and practically stayed there (its not unusal for me to hit that figure - but I usually rest and it goes down).

After the session I felt really cold and started shivering and had the most enormous headache. It took me about 2 hours to warm myself up and then my headache went.

Normal? Worrying? HELP!!

Get a new PT. Sounds like you seriously over did it, to the point of being seriously dehyrated (or possibly suffering heat stroke or mineral deficiency). This can be dangerous to the point of sudden heart failure or brain damage!

What are your stats and goals? At no time should you be exercising continuously at a heart rate over about 160 (80% of max), especially if you are new to exercise.

I think the trainer seriously over worked you.

I've seen trainers who try to work the crap out of new clients in an attempt to "wow" them. I find this highly irresponsible but it happens.

Absolutely, if your trainer hasn't assessed you before he/she began the workout session, than you probably got a pretty irresponsible trainer anyway. What you probably went through was a little taste of hypo-glycemic shock. This is why YOU MUST EAT before you train. Since, your dishing out the cash to this trainer make sure he/she is keeping a journal of what's going on with you and what your workout looks will look like in the future.

In fairness to my PT I had left the gym before all this kicked in. When I left the gym, I just felt tired.

I will speak to her tomorrow.

In answer to your questions:

Yes Im very new to working out -
I weigh about 220lb and I'm 5'9''
I'm 40.

and I did eat breakfast before I trained, I also drank lots of water throughout and after.

Many thanks for your thoughts - I will definately speak to her before I train again. I think you are probably right about the low blood sugar - it was after I'd eaten that I felt better.
