I'm obese, the last time I went to the doctor she said my blood pressure was just a little up, not to bad yet though. That was 4 months ago, anyways I have a doctors appointment September 16th to get a full check up, cholesterol, blood pressure..EVERYTHING. But until then im going to be dieting(been on a diet for 3 days and lost 7 lbs already :D) and I wanted to start walking for 45 minutes/ a mile a day. I weigh 430 pounds, alot I know, but I can move pretty easily, im pretty quick and can do the exercise with no problem, unlike other people my size. problem is, I want to know if this exercise is safe for me to do?...I dont want to have a heart attack, but I really want to exercise to help myself lose weight, and before when I was on diets in the past (last summer) I walked that amount with no problems and I was about 420lbs then. So do you think 45 minutes of walking a day at my weight now would be ok?

Oh and i'm 20 years old, about to be 21 if that helps.

Thank you for your help. :)

I think your doc is the best person to answer that question. :Angel_anim:

Yeah I figured that, I just don't want to wait 2 and a half weeks to start exercising, i'm really motivated and wanted to get my journey going. I'm asking because I thought some people on here might have experience, or I thought maybe their were some Doctors on here.

I haven't seen any doctors around here; I think there's more than one PT but I'm not sure they'd be the right people to ask.

What is it you're wanting to know, anyway...whether 45 min of walking would be beneficial, or whether you could physically harm yourself by walking for that long?

If it's the former, then yes...go ahead and do it, walking is a pretty gentle way to ease yourself into an exercise plan.

If it's the latter, nobody here can (or should attempt to) answer that. That constitutes medical advice and even if I was a doctor (which I'm not), I think it would be irresponsible (and probably unethical) for a doctor to give you medical advice without examining you.

I will say this though; I am glad you're motivated, I'm glad you're here, and speaking for myself I'm pulling for you to succeed. Starting a journey like this takes guts and determination and I for one will be cheering you on. I just don't want to see you injure yourself, get discouraged, and quit. I'm trying to take things gently and slowly at first to avoid injuries because I know if I injure myself, the odds are good that I will use it as an excuse to stop going to the gym at least for a little while. I'll then possibly fall out of the habit of going, and then fail yet again. Not this time! I'm hell-bent on succeeding!

I was just asking if it was a gentle enough of an exercise to start without consulting a doctor, so yes, the physical harm part.

Thank's alot though for your input I really appreciate it.

Also, congrats on your loss so far and good luck with the rest of your journey, ill be cheering for you aswell. :)

Wellllll....offhand I'd say sure, go ahead and do it....but all the disclaimers on every machine/fitness video say to consult a physician before beginning a new fitness program. I guess my advice would be to use your own best judgement on that one. :coolgleamA:

I'd probably start off at lower than 45 minutes a day -- maybe start with 20 -30 minutes to get yourself into the habit of moving - then up your time/distance/pace... but if you set the bar at 45 minutes a day and get tired at 25 - it could be discouraging...

Do what you can do at first... and progress from there.

and pay attention to how you're feeling...

I agree with the above posts... all of them. Nobody here can tell you yes or no. It's not like 45 minutes of walking is universally good or bad given your stats. I've met a number of people your size who could get around quite well.

I've also met a few people your size who had to use motorized scooters to get around any appreciable distances.

If I were you, which I'm not, I would start out with no set distance or time. Just walk. Walk within your comfortable limit. And be safe. Don't be silly thinking you're going to make such a drastic difference in 2 weeks that you couldn't possibly wait to start then. It's taken you a lifetime to get to the point you are now, and two weeks sure as shit isn't going to make or break you.

That said, you're motivated. So start light. Real light. And be overly cautious until you speak with your doc.

To add, diet, by far, is going to be the primary driver to your success. Sounds like you've got that going on the right path since you've already dropped a nice chunk of weight. Make sure you don't set yourself up for failure on the nutrition front by constructing rigid parameters that you won't be able to adhere to long enough.... enough being forever.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I decided to just take it slow and walk a little bit each day and be cautious until my appointment.

I'm trying to get the diet part down right now so I dont end up failing, gonna be switching up my meals weekly once I find some more recipes/other foods I am allowed to eat. Right now im eating 5 small meals a day because I heard that is what's best.

Again, thank's for the help, appreciate it alot.

Do spend some time reading the stickied threads around the forum...

5 meals a day are what's best if that's what's best for you... What you want to focus on is total calories consumed during the day -that can be in 2 meals a day, 12 meals a day - entirely up to you and your body.

Personally, I couldn't do the 5 meals a day -i never quite felt satisfied... plus my schedule had a tough time with it.. I like 3 real meals a day and 2 snacks that i can grab...
