Is it a waste of time?

Hi there! I’m new to all this so please bear with me!

Firstly, I have to confess, I do absolutely no exercise other than walk our dog. I guess I am lucky because I am reasonably well toned considering, but wouldn’t mind making a bit more effort as I have noticed that things are looking a bit more wobbly these days than they used to!

I already know from past experience that I don’t stick to going to the gym/exercise classes etc, mainly because I am a bit lazy and never seem to mange to get there (although I quite enjoyed using the machines when I did manage to get to the gym) so I’m thinking about buying a multi-gym I can use at home. I figure that if I can do ½ hour toning exercises a day (I know that’s not much but I’m being realistic about the amount of effort I am willing to put in!) then surely that’s got to be better than doing absolutely nothing at all. I do realise that if I only make this much effort then I'm not going to get huge results, and that's fine, but I guess what I really want to know is, am I completely wasting my time, or is this little amount of regular exercise better than nothing at all?

I'm always of the opinion that any exercise is a good thing. Who knows, you may really enjoy using that home gym and want to kick it up a notch (or several). If nothing else if puts you on the right road. Before you do that though, why not try some less expensive exercising first? Walking, calisthenics and the like would get you started without having the investment in a piece of gear. Just my 2 cents.

Well that's interesting advice already thanks. And it's what I wanted to hear. I feel that I could stick at doing 1/2 hour a day - that's within my laziness scope, but if somebody said to me 'listen, 1/2 hour a day isn't really worth bothering with - you're wasting your time' then I'd probably not bother.

If on the other hand 1/2 an hour a day while I'm watching TV, or even 1/2 hour 3-4 times a week IS worth the effort, then it would be a small price to pay for being even slightly more toned. I've been reading on this forum about 'skinny fat'. Overall I look slim and I have been told I have a good figure, but my answer to that is usually to laugh it off and say something like 'you should see me with my clothes off!'. Despite being 'slim' I am flabby, and if this amount of commitment will make a difference, then it's got to be worth it!

Anytime spent is well worth the time.
After some time you may find yourself more energized and may want to increase that amount. Either way keep it up, you already made the most important step that is starting.

Good job!

I think dog walking would be great exercise!!!!! Maybe not your ONLY exercise, though...

Think of what else you like and what else would fit into your schedule.

See my diary on this site.

I'm with NY, lots of little activities really add up, like at work I take a 15 and just go walking around the building or take the stairs up and down that way at least I have done something.
I'm also trying out different sports, like raquetball and tennis. I may no be a pro or intend on playing for the next 10yrs but at least i'm getting my exercise in.
hope this helps!

Agreed here is a link for CB's BW stuff:

you can have a good weights session in 30mins.what sort of equipment and how much are you going to spend.

You may want to try a couple of exercise videos...there some out there called "10 minute solutions"....this may be a way for you to start without putting a lot of time or money into it...Try Collage video for titles..Good luck!;) Debra

I've been "working out" for four weeks now for only 15 minutes a day-- with an exercise video (Tamilee Webb's 'I Want That Body') and 5 pound dumbbells. I've already had noticeable results. Like you, I consider myself to be skinny fat (very slim, look great in clothes, but very little muscletone and it's starting to look flabby). I also walk a lot, that's my main exercise I suppose!

I'm going to stick with following this video plus a few extra exercises for areas the video doesn't hit, and then when I'm ready to take it to the next level I'll either join a gym or invest in some equipment.

That said, I was shocked by how challenging an exercise video can be. I couldn't even make it through the first set of the lower body exercises when I first started. Now I make it through all three, though I don't use any weights for the lower body yet. Even so, I already see new muscle definition and firmness in my thighs and my butt has actually gotten more shape. My arms have curvey muscles on them now instead of just looking like two noodles hanging from my shoulders. ;) This exercise thing WORKS!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'll second (or third) what Jenn and Larrabee said. Bodyweight workouts are great for adding some lean muscle and stripping off some fat. The best part is that they don't cost anything and can be done anywhere!
